3 BC - AD This was the moment when Before Turned into A`er, and the future's Uninvented Smekeepers presented arms. This was the moment when nothing Happened. Only dull peace Sprawled boringly over the earth. This was the moment when even energesc Romans Could find nothing bever to do Than counsng heads in remote provinces. And this was the moment When a few farm workers and three Members of an obscure Persian sect Walked haphazard by starlight straight Into the kingdom of heaven. U.A. Fanthorpe ( )

11 MaVhew 2:1-12New Revised Standard Version, Anglicised (NRSVA) The Visit of the Wise Men 2 In the Sme of King Herod, a`er Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men[a] from the East came to Jerusalem, 2 asking, Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising,[b] and have come to pay him homage. 3 When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; 4 and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah[c] was to be born. 5 They told him, In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been wriven by the prophet: 6 And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd[d] my people Israel. 7 Then Herod secretly called for the wise men[e] and learned from them the exact Sme when the star had appeared. 8 Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage. 9 When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising,[f] unsl it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw that the star had stopped,[g] they were overwhelmed with joy. 11 On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure- chests, they offered him gi`s of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 12 And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they le` for their own country by another road.

15 'Like me,' she said to them, 'you were late in coming. The shepherds were here long before; even the cavle. They had joined the chorus of angels before you were on your way. For you the primordial discipline of the heavens was relaxed and a new defiant light blazed amid the disconcerted stars. 'How laboriously you came, taking sights and calculasng, where the shepherds had run barefoot! How odd you looked on the road, avended by what outlandish liveries, laden with such preposterous gi`s! 'You came at length to the final stage of your pilgrimage and the great star stood ssll above you. What did you do? You stopped to call on King Herod. Deadly exchange of compliments in which began that unended war of mobs and magistrates against the innocent! 'Yet you came, and were not turned away. You too found room before the manger. Your gi`s were not needed, but they were accepted and put carefully by, for they were brought with love. In that new order of charity that had just come to life, there was room for you, too. You were not lower in the eyes of the holy family than the ox or the ass. 'You are my especial patrons,' said Helena, 'and patrons of all late- comers, of all who have a tedious journey to make to the truth, of all who are confused with knowledge and speculason, of all who through politeness make themselves partners in guilt, of all who stand in danger by reason of their talents. From Helena, a novel about St Helena, mother of Emperor ConstanSne, by Evelyn Waugh
