THE BOSTON CONSERVATORY [MUSIC DANCE THEATER]
ABOUT THE BOSTON CONSERVATORY The Boston Conservatory trains exceptional young performing artists for careers that enrich and transform the human experience. Known for its multi-disciplinary environment, the Conservatory offers fully accredited graduate and undergraduate programs in Music, Dance, Theater and Music Education, and presents more than 200 performances each year by students, faculty and guest artists. The intimacy of our class settings provides a student-centered atmosphere that is uniquely intensive and supportive. Since its founding in 1867, The Boston Conservatory has shared its talent and creativity with the city of Boston, the region and the nation, and continues to grow today as a vibrant community of artists and educators. Moreover, our Conservatory Connections outreach program brings student performances to more than 50 homeless shelters, hospitals, senior centers, schools and public libraries in Boston annually. This performance has been made possible in part by gifts from individuals, foundations, corporations and government agencies who support the hard work and extraordinary talent of our students, faculty and guest artists. We invite you to join this community of support by sending a gift to The Boston Conservatory s Annual Fund, PO Box , Boston, MA or by visiting our website:

PROGRAM NOTES "Den Tod niemand zwingen kunnt" text by Martin Luther No one could defeat death among all humanity, this was all because of our sins, no innocence was to be found. Therefore death came so soon and took power over us, held us captive in his kingdom. Hallelujah! "Wir eilen mit schwachen" text by Johann Rist We hasten with weak, yet eager steps, O Jesus, o Master, to You for help. You faithfully seek the ill and erring. Ah, hear, how we lift up our voices to beg for help! Let Your gracious countenance be joyful to us! Stabat Mater 1. There stood the Mother grieving, Beside the cross Weeping, While on it hung her son 2. Whose saddened soul, Signing and suffering, A sword pierced through. 3. O how sad and how afflicted Was that blessed Mother Of the Only-Begotten! 4. Loving Mother, who was grieving And suffering, while she beheld The torments of her glorious Son. Translations Pamela Dellal
5. Who is the man who would not weep If he should see the Mother of Christ In such great distress? Who could not be saddened If he should behold the Mother of Christ Suffering with her only Son? For the sins of his people, She saw Jesus in torments And subjected to stripes. 6. She saw her own sweet Son, Whose dying caused his desolation, While he yielded up his Spirit. 7. Oh Mother, fount of love, Make me feel the force of your grief, So that I may mourn with you, 8. Grant that my heart may burn In loving Christ my God, So that I may be pleasing to him. 9. Holy Mother, may you do this: Fix the stripes of the Crucified Deeply into my heart. Share with me the pains Of your wounded Son Who deigned to suffer so much for me. Make me lovingly weep with you, To suffer with the Crucified So long as I shall live. To stand with you beside the cross, And to join with you in deep lament: This I long for and desire. O Virgin all virgins excelling, Be not inclement with me now; Cause me to mourn with you.
10. Grant that I may bear the death of Christ; Make me a sharer in His Passion And ever mindful of his wounds. Let me be wounded by His wounds, Cause me to be inebriated by the Cross And the Blood of your Son. 11. Lest I burn in flames enkindled, May I, through thee, O Virgin, Be defended on Judgment Day. O Christ, where from here I must depart, Grant that, through you Mother, I may obtain the palm of victory. 12. When my body perishes Grant that my soul be given The glory of Paradise. 13. Amen. Ave Maria Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee, blessed are thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. Translation Ron Jeffers
ABOUT THE ARTISTS Miguel Felipe is happy to be conductor of the Women's Chorus at The Boston Conservatory for the first time tonight. In addition to his activities at Boston Conservatory, Mr. Felipe is director of music at Arlington Street Church, Unitarian Universalist, an historic congregation in Boston's Back Bay. He also leads the Boston Choral Ensemble, an auditioned, 32- voice chamber choir that performs throughout the Boston area. A student of Dr. Ann Howard Jones at Boston University, Mr. Felipe finished his Master of Music degree in 2005 and is now a doctoral candidate. In addition to his studies, he serves as assistant to André de Quadros, director of BU's School of Music. De Quadros is editor of several multi-cultural choral series with various publishers such as earthsongs and Hinshaw. Prior to his move to Boston, Mr. Felipe lived in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he studied conducting with John Leman and Christopher Zimmerman while earning a degree at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.
