1 THE SPIRIT HOLY SPIRIT LUTHERAN CHURCH JANUARY 2019 Our purpose is to love God and bring people into a growing relationship with Jesus and His church! Dear Family of God; Grace to you and peace from God our Father and His Son, Jesus Christ! One of the great New Testament Scholars of the previous Century was Martin Franzmann. He wrote a Commentary on the Book of Acts entitled The Word of the Lord Grows. The Title tell us the theme of Acts according to Dr. Franzmann. The Word of the Lord grew the early church. At the beginning of each Church Council meeting, I have been reading a portion of Acts and asking your Church leaders two questions 1) What is God doing in this passage, and 2) What would God have us do? The questions and answers are crucial to us at Holy Spirit as we move into The Book of Acts is a blue print based on the early church, for growing and building a church. Members of the Church Council are discovering the importance of prayer, evangelism, social ministry, outreach, teaching, sharing, fellowship and preaching. This all happened due to a strong reliance on the Holy Spirit and a clear focus on preaching the Good News of Jesus Christ. During our Dedication Service we heard Peter s well-known passage in his 1 st Letter (one of Martin Luther s favorites) about building the Church on the cornerstone, namely Jesus Christ. Now that we have a beautiful Sanctuary and rooms to go with it, the time has arrived to build the rest of the church, namely the Royal priesthood, God chosen people to go along with the new Building! Much like the old Sunday School song about the church not being a building but a people, we are to build up a people at Holy Spirit Church! So as we enter the Year of our Lord 2019, I invite no encourage you to do three things; Dedicate yourself to worship the Lord! Pray for Holy Spirit Lutheran Church that we will be open to God s guidance! Be involved by finding a way you can serve, initiate or volunteer. Your Lord needs you! My new motto for 2019 is It s not about us, it s about Jesus! In Jesus! Pastor Rickel
2 Happy New Year to All! I am honored to be your Council President for I thank those out-going Council members Wende Peters, Bill Dodson, Sharon Hindman, for their commitment and dedication to the work of the Council. I look forward to new year of routine business and anticipated challenges working with returning Council members (Nancy Bowman, Andy Jones, Milt Taylor, Holly debendedictis, Laura Blum, Will Stecher, Carol Friend), three newly elected members (Michele Burger, Mark Friend, Jim Robinson), Pastor Gerry, Deacon Linda, and Joe Herb. Much is happening at Holy Spirit. There is a place, purpose, and task for everyone. Committees always need new ideas and willing hands to accomplish them. I ask that you find an area of our church life suited to your interests, talents, and skills, and make that leap of faith and commitment. Please contact me, or anyone on Council, to help you start or expand your committee involvement. God s Blessings! 3 .Early Learning Center News for January: The Children did a great job in their programs at Christmas. The programs had lots of family members who attended. The children sang, danced and acted out the Christmas story. As we return in January we will be talking about the weather, penguins and snowmen. Each class will be making rolled out sugar cookies. They will be baking and decorating winter cookies for their snack sometime during the week of the 7. We continue learning our sight words, letters, letter sounds and our numbers. The threes have been learning a letter a day with many activities to promote their learning of the alphabet. The two s will continue to make many crafts and projects. Our character trait for this month is Patience. Our Pre-K classes will visit the Sykesville Fire Department where they will be entertained by a puppet show and tour of the fire house. The two and three year olds will be taking a trip to Hoppers to bounce the day away. Soccer Shots will begin again the week of January 7. This program has been a lot of fun for the children. On January 29 the staff will have an Emergency Evacuation Class in an in-service day. Registration is now open we have a few spaces available. If you have or know any families who have preschool age children please share our information with them or have them call the office at or at hslc.preschool@comcast.net. Music & Worship Among your New Year s resolutions resolve to be a Worship Service Volunteer. Assisting Minister, Communion Assistant, Lector, Acolyte, Usher, Greeter, Altar Care, and Fellowship.. are all areas that need more participants. I ll be waiting for your call!!!!! or Nancy Bowman Music & Worship Chairperson
4 January 2019 Notes from the Parish Nurse Hi, A couple of things about our upcoming winter weather. If it snows and you are shoveling, take frequent breaks and rest. Always make sure you re using your legs and not your back. Don t get too cold, especially hands and feet. Bundle up! Of course, with winter a lot of viruses and upper respiratory infections can occur. A few tips: cover your mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing. Rather than using your hands cover with your elbow. This works really well with kids. Wash hands frequently and to prevent the dryness of your hands use lotion afterwards. The basic difference between a virus and a cold is your temperature. If you have a fever, and have a color to the discharge it usually means a bacterial infection and antibiotics work well. If it s a virus, treat the symptoms. Some over the counter medications work well for this and in both cases drink the fluids. Many times we need to drink more fluids in the winter to keep ourselves hydrated due to the dryness of the air. Of course, if you have any questions or concerns call your primary care physician. I m starting the blood pressure checks again every other week in between services and after the late service. Blessings, Dena Mar-Lu-Ridge Summer Camp Come join us this upcoming summer for a wonderful week of camp! 5 Hymn Story In Christ There is No East or West 1 In Christ there is no east or west, in him no south or north, but one community of love throughout the whole wide earth. 2 In Christ shall true hearts ev rywhere their high communion find; his service is the golden cord close binding humankind. 3 Join hands, disciples of the faith, whate er your race may be. All children of the living God are surely kin to me. 4 In Christ now meet both east and west, in him meet south and north; all Christly souls are one in him throughout the whole wide earth. This hymn is the antithesis of the famous phase East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet from Rudyard Kipling's poem The Ballad of East and West (1889) Its theme is taken from Galatians 3:28: There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. (NRS) The author of the hymn is William A. Dunkerley, who wrote hymns and poetry under the pen name John Oxenham. Dunkerley was born in 1852 in Manchester, UK. He was a successful businessman who traveled extensively and started writing to relieve the boredom of his journeys. In Christ There is No East or West was part of a larger work written in 1908 for an exhibition by the London Missionary Society. Although thousands of people saw the exhibit, publishers rejected the book which contained Dunkerley's work. He published it himself in 1913, and it sold over 250,000 copies. The hymn was originally written to support world missions in the early 20 th century. It has been adapted with more inclusive language and is now one of the great hymns of Christian unity for this century. According to hymnary.org, this hymn has been published with 15 different tunes. The one in our hymnal is called McKee and is one of the two most commonly used. It was an Irish tune that was brought to the United States and became associated with the African American spiritual I Know the Angels Done Changed My Name. In 1939, Harry T. Burleigh adapted it and set Dunkerley's hymn to it. Burleigh was born in Erie, Pennsylvania in His grandfather was a slave in Somerset County, Maryland, who purchased his own freedom; his father served in the Union Navy during the Civil War. At the age of 26, Burleigh received a scholarship to study at the National Conservatory of Music in New York. While there, he sang spirituals for the school s director, the Czech composer Antonín Dvořák. The tune for this hymn was named after Elmer M. McKee, who was the rector at St. George's Episcopal Church in New York City, where Burleigh was baritone Harry T. Burleigh William Dunkerley, aka John Oxenham, c soloist from 1894 until (Yes, that s 52 years!) In addition to being a singer and arranger, Burleigh also composed music and was the first African-American composer to contribute to the development of distinctively American music.
