THE WOLDS AND TRENT CIRCUIT OF THE METHODIST CHURCH IN LINCOLNSHIRE LINK May 2014

Pastoral Letter Do I hear rain? Many years ago when we were on holiday in Norfolk, we went to a Sunday service in a small Baptist church in Mundesley. In the notices, given at the start of the service, a gentleman announced that, if the Lord tarries, there will be a coffee morning next Saturday at After our holiday had ended and we were back at home, we assumed that the event had taken place because the Lord had, indeed, tarried. Some older Christians pray for travelling mercies before they set off on a long journey. You may well have used that term in a prayer yourself. I wonder, though, have you ever heard anyone refer to Pentecostal showers? Someone not familiar with church would surely conclude that the person praying was asking the Lord to send some much-needed rain for the local gardens. However, Pentecostal showers refers to something much more vital and important. The church always needs the blessing of the Holy Spirit. It is His job to empower Christians; to teach, lead and encourage us. He gives us His gifts so that the church can be powerful and effective. With that in mind, we won t be content to settle for mediocre Pentecostal showers, which, like their meteorological equivalent of a few spots of rain, tend to be short-lived and barely noticeable. While the Lord tarries, to quote the man in Mundesley, we need a full flood of the Lord s power to help us to reveal the truth that Jesus is Lord. Think of the spectacular effect of heavy rain in a desert after months or even years of drought. Suddenly, there is colour, life, drama and vitality. In the same way, we need the reviving and restorative blessings of the Holy Spirit. He is more than able to keep His promises. Are we willing to take Him at His word? Syd Andrew

Hello Everyone NEWS FROM AROUND THE CIRCUIT Brookenby Church Contact: Mrs M Nicholls Caistor Church Contact: Mr M James Wednesday the 23 rd April was a special Luncheon Club dinner. It was special because it was free, it was special because we had turkey, pigs in blankets, roast and mashed potatoes, carrots, sprouts, stuffing and gravy plus cranberry sauce as an added extra if we wished. It was special as this was followed by fruit flan and cream, all beautifully prepared and presented by our three cooks, Heather, Robina and Eileen with help from our behind the scene helpers, and served by Louis, Ben, Andrew and our guest (who felt just like one of us, a breath of fresh air she made herself at home). Many thanks to Beverly a wonderful relations administrator for Morrisons. It was special because of the atmosphere of warm fellowship and laughter, especially during raffle time. Extra raffle prizes were brought by Beverly from Morrisons; as was the wonderful gift of 70 Cadbury s crème eggs which were given out (wrapped in knitted chickens) by our Minister Andrew, Bev and myself and very graciously received by everyone. It was special because we remembered all those who had gone before and those who could not join us in person because they were too poorly, in hospital or at home. It was special because when the first discussions to if anybody was interested in opening a Luncheon Club during the turn of the century said it wouldn t last long, have been proved wrong, (sorry folks) we are now in our fifteenth year and still going strong. Many thanks for the first cooks who served us faithfully: Mary, Alma, Alice and Madge and now Robina, Eileen and Heather with the helpers in the kitchen, and the washing up roat for members. We have 60 members and 10 people on the waiting list. Out of the 60, we have 11 nonogenarians, isn t that wonderful. I thank God for all his Blessings. Signing out, Yvonne Ps Thank you everyone for your support in making this a special day.

Faldingworth Church Contact: Mrs C Waite We were very fortunate in receiving a grant from the Community Chest Fund of West Lindsey. We have been able to redecorate the ceiling and walls in the schoolroom. When Rev Alan Robson was Superintendent Minister here (some time ago) we were able to re-decorate the lounge. We were able to use the room for our Coffee & Crafts morning on Saturday. Rev Anne Coates and Janet Faulkner came along to share their skills withthose who wished to make cards for Easter. It was very enjoyable. We welcomed Jane Lloyd for our service on the Sunday which followed and welcomed Jane Cram who came to play the organ to accompany the hymns. Rev Anne Coates led our United Service for Mothering Sunday and Cynthia Bunch joined us too. Our good wishes to everyone. Laurie Oxborrow Gainsborough Church Contact: Mr M Childs We continue our various activities, social gatherings (often at Wetherspoons), a regular Saturday Coffee Morning, fellowship groups, children and young people s groups as well as Café Worship and Causeway Prospects Sunday services on a regular basis. The premises are used very well, by our own groups but also by several outside organisations. Lent was followed, each Sunday having readings as we added significant symbols to the cross which is specially used throughout Lent and Easter. On Palm Sunday Rev. Manny Wiles led our worship, and this was followed by the Annual Church meeting, with a faith lunch. The faithfulness of the lunch was more than sufficient to feed those gathered in the evening for Café Worship. Good Friday was a time for reflection on the events of Holy Week, as we visited eight stations, telling the story and challenging us in our thinking and prayer. As I write, Easter Sunday still awaits us, starting with a breakfast together and then a Communion, the celebration being led by Liz. May looks like being a quieter time, but we look forward to what God has in store for his people here, and for those he may be drawing to him and who we pray for. Mike Childs

Glentham Church Contact: Mr T Faulkner This is the time of year when we prepare ourselves for Easter focusing on the sufferings of Jesus and His triumph over death in the resurrection on Easter Day. We are planning to celebrate Easter Sunday with all the children at Messy Church. On 30th March we celebrated Mothering Sunday with the children at Messy Church and at the close of the service the children gave to each of the ladies in the congregation a pot plant. We were delighted to welcome ~Tim Smith, and his wife, who joined us for breakfast before Tim conducted the service on 23rd March. At our Family Service on 6th April we were thrilled to welcome our friends from Misterton and on this occasion were happy to welcome Gordon Dixon to lead our worship followed by fellowship with tea/coffee and biscuits. Let us continue to thank God for all His many blessings. Margaret. Men s Breakfast The Crown Inn, Glentham 10 th May at 9am (every 2 nd Saturday of the month!!) Full English Breakfast 5.50 and free chat!!! Please Phone Peter & book your place! Gringley Church Contact: Mrs P Gray

Fundraising for the Nomad Trust Many thanks to those of you who are continuing to support the the work of the Nomad Trust. I am very pleased to announce that we have now raised in the Connexional year. This means the total amount of money raised since September 2012 is an amazing ! If you are still awaiting a new collection box, my apologies, as I have been short of spare boxes. This has now been addressed, so I will be sending further bundles of boxes to participating groups across the circuit. These boxes won t have any numbers on. However, if you would like to know the total you have raised, either add your old number, or pencil your name on the front label. Alternatively, if you would like to gift aid and you pay income tax, please fill in the label on the back instead. Nomad will then be able to reclaim an extra 20% on top of the money you have collected. I also include part of Revd. Hamish Temple s message in the Nomad Easter newsletter: It is nearly a year since the Nomad Trust merged with the Y.M.C.A. It has proved a better decision than any of us could have hoped for, even though we knew there were some practical adjustments to be made. The emergency shelter has had an upgrade, which has been much appreciated by the homeless. The move-on facility at Sheridan Close has also made significant improvements, and continues to do so. The retail part of the Furniture Project has moved from Bar Gate to Sincil Street while the new retail sales outlet in Sincil Street has been joined by our Charity Shop, which has moved from Monks Road. With a vastly improved footfall, sales are now exceeding those we originally hoped for when the Furniture Project started two years ago. I and the other board members congratulate the staff and volunteers for all their hard work during the changeover. The project I mentioned last Newsletter about the plans to increase the number of emergency and move on beds has progressed. The proposed site, the building plans, and general business strategy have been agreed by the board, and the planning application is ready to be submitted. If/when the planning application is approved we will be able to announce this exciting new era in the evolving story of the Nomad Trust. We thank you for your prayers and support; we still need them as we seek to transform the lives of the homeless. Best wishes to you all. Ian Hardcastle

Market Rasen Church Contact: Mr G Taylor glta332@yahoo.co.uk Sunday Services; a.m.; monthly evening service at 6.00p.m. Weekday communion; First Friday in the month 10.00a.m. Weekday activities & other events; See monthly Bulletin The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9: 10) When Glenda and I visit our family in Chicago, one of our delights on the school run is to see the students of Wheaton Christian Grammar School (yes, that is its title!), including three of our grandchildren going through the entrance door, above which in bold and ornate letters is written that text from Proverbs. This is a school where every concert is begun and ended in prayer as is, I understand, every staff meeting. Every morning, the American flag is formally raised by the students and every evening it is lowered and reverently folded away. Of course, this happens in all public (what we would call state ) schools too, but at this school, the Christian flag is raised alongside the stars and stripes and similarly honoured. Here the students take the daily Christian assembly (they call it chapel ) and they also pfovide teams of musicians to lead the worship. Market Rasen Choral Society rehearse in the local Primary School. This is a Church of England school. Here the walls of the hall are decorated with some lovely art work, all with a Christian theme. One of the pictures, painted, remarkably, by four year old children, is a wonderful montage of the Genesis story of Adam and Eve. I am delighted to say that the head teacher and governors have given the society permission to use this picture for its posters and programme to promote its forthcoming concert of Haydn s Creation. I know how proud we are too of our own Methodist/Anglican school in Caistor and of the close relationship our circuit has with this school. How important it is to give our children and young people a grounding in our Christian faith! Many of our age group who were brought up in the Methodist tradition of Sunday school and church-going realise how valuable this foundation has been in our Christian journey. Perhaps it is even more important now in the increasingly secular and even atheistic state our country is becoming.

And so we are delighted that our Circuit youth workers have succeeded in setting up a youth club in our chapel. Many of the clients are from the boarding house of De Aston School which means that as well as linking with the primary schools, Elaine and Gareth have now developed a bridge-head in the secondary sector. Pray with us, please, as they move towards introducing a youth Alpha course with some of these young people. The team have told us how much they value our prayer support for their work in furthering the kingdom in this way. As the period of Lent comes to an end and we prepare for Easter, we look forward to our Good Friday morning open air ecumenical service around the cross in the Market Place and a performance in the evening of Faure s Requiem given by a choir and soloists of local singers conducted by Jeffery Blewett and accompanied by Stephen Pedlar on the organ. Finally, let us return to our opening text from proverbs which Andrew quoted in the devotions before a recent stewards meeting. His explanation of the true loving nature of a fearful God was enlightening and strengthened us in our more mundane deliberations! God Bless Geoff Ordinands Testimony Service Thursday 8th May pm Market Rasen Methodist Church This is a special service to celebrate the forthcoming ordination of Rev Anne Coates and two other ordinands from our district. The service is open to everyone and we are expecting many people from round the district to join us. Besides the testimonies the Chair of District, Rev Bruce Thompson, will be preaching.

Marton Church Contact: Mrs D Kitchinson As part of our 200th year celebrations, we held a very enjoyable concert by the Lincolnshire Fire & Rescue Concert Band. This was held at Gainsborough Methodist Church (by kind permission). We thank everyone for their support and the evening helped to put more money into our refurbishment fund which is still needed for external work. It was so good to see so many of our friends there particularly as there were two other events taking place in the Gainsborough area on the same night. What a wonderful service we had on Palm Sunday conducted by Rev Liz Childs, she never disappoints does she?. Our friends at Lea and Upton Chapels shared the service with us. We were also pleased to welcome Rev Keith and Norma Lackenby - had it not been for Keith who guided our prayers and helped to secure funding for our refurbishment programme where would Marton Chapel be now? Apart from the heating all other work was carried out by Mr Andrew Yardley, assisted in part by his wife Claire and we were pleased that they too could join us. After the service about 30 of us enjoyed a carvery lunch held locally. Our next coffee morning is on Wednesday 30th April at 10 a.m. as usual everyone welcome. God bless Doris

Middle Rasen Church Contact: Mrs A Surfleet Easter brings to end Lent and the going without something you value or has given you pleasure. In many cases, it will have been chocolate and so out comes the chocolate Easter eggs (although they will have been in the shops almost since Christmas!). The egg is a symbol of fertility and re-birth; a celebration of new life-the life Jesus taught us. Originally, eating eggs was not allowed by the Church during Holy Week, so they were saved up, decorated and then given to children-healthier and cheaper than the chocolate ones of today. Easter is a sad time as well as a happy one, when we remember Jesus dying on the cross and then, three days later, His Resurrection. On Good Friday, we lay rocks at the foot of the cross in Chapel- a good time to lay down our own problems, pain and sadness- (the burdens we carry about us daily) thereby allowing us to gain some peace and strength in the joyful knowledge of being one of God s children ( Rev Anne s words). Then, after breakfast on Easter Sunday, we change the Cross of Sorrow to one of joy by placing little posies of Spring flowers all over the Cross. It looks so beautiful. The cross is then placed outside the Church so all may see and reminded of the resurrection of Jesus. This Easter will be a sad time for June and Colin Hare and our thoughts and prayers go out to them, giving them strength to cope with what is to come concerning their son. Our prayers go out also to everyone at this special time, but especially to those who have, or who are, experiencing sadness in their lives. On Sunday, 17 th April, we will have joined with our Anglican friends in the Palm Sunday procession between the two Churches (complete with donkey!) with the service being held at our Chapel this year.

Maintaining the fabric of the Church is always a costly problem as you know. We have two excellent free maintenance men who work tirelessly to keep our Church in good nick so on Saturday 16 th April we had a special coffee morning to raise funds. We have a monthly coffee morning regularly on the second Saturday of each month. Coffee, Cake and Chat meets regularly but, on Thursday 1 st May, it is a special one to raise money for the Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance. Middle Rasen is well known for it s generosity and friendliness whatever the occasion! The Guild has finished for the Autumn with a rousing musical evening to which other Guilds were invited follows by one of Middle Rasens famous suppers! The Womens Own continues until the Summer. Now we have become the Wolds and Trent Circuit, it is interesting to have new preachers and to meet new people from other Churches. We must try to remember and live by the new Circuit Mission Statement, based on 1 Corinthan v:13: To live by Faith, to be known by Love, to be a voice of Hope whilst always keeping Jesus at the centre of our lives (Faith, Hope and Love but the greatest of these is Love) We wish our Rev Anne Coates much happiness in her vocation when a special service to be held at Market Rasen on Thursday 8 th May celebrates her forthcoming Ordination, together with two other Ordinands from the District. The Chair of the District Rev Bruce Thompson, will be presiding. God Bless you all this Easter time from Middle Rasen, Liz Margrave Misterton Church Contact: Mr S Bilton

North Kelsey Church Contact: Mrs M Thomas Easter celebrations started early in North Kelsey when the schoolchildren came across to chapel for their Easter Service before breaking up. Our minister Anne was able to relate the main events of Easter in ways which allowed the children to participate and Sarah led an action song. She was also able to introduce the Easter egg hunt which she planned for the holidays. She hid eggs around the village. Each egg had part of the Easter story written inside and a related symbol for example bread for the last supper, a nail for the crucifixion and a heart for God s love for us. Families were able to have a map showing the locations to search and the children recorded the symbols they found. They were invited to Open House to share in our usual tea /coffee/squash and cake session to bring back their forms and get their prizes. Nine children came and it was great to see their enthusiasm. We do appreciate the work Sarah put in to organising it. We had wondered whether the eggs would remain hidden throughout the search time, but although one or two bits went missing our misgivings proved largely unfounded! Five of our congregation are taking part in singing Faure s Requiem on Good Friday. Initially, I thought it was an unusual choice, but on thinking about it more, it feels appropriate. After all, it is because of the death and resurrection of Jesus that we can believe that God s loving plans for us extend beyond this life. By the time you read this, Easter will be over. I hope that we will all feel renewed confidence and joy because we have heard the Easter message afresh, especially those who are going through sad or difficult times just now. For the Open Churches Weekend, May 10th -11th, we will be serving refreshments including salad lunches and we will be bringing examples of the hobbies we enjoy for added value! Everyone welcome. As often happens, the Market Rasen and District Choral Society concert is on the same weekend, which makes life hectic! We are singing Haydn s Creation details elsewhere in the magazine. God bless, Sylvia

Hello everyone! Upton Church Contact: Mrs Julie Barrow I have just returned from a special service of re-dedication at Marton Chapel followed by a tasty lunch for over 20 church members from Marton, Upton and Lea. The sun is shining, it s a glorious day and I sit here thinking what to write about while Patrick (my husband) and my father sit snoring in the background. Well, actually I have plenty to tell you this month, so. If you are sitting comfortably. then I will begin!! On Sunday 18th May Upton Chapel will be celebrating our 192nd. Anniversary. The service will be led by Mr. Michael Page from Gainsborough at 10-30am and we are really looking forward to celebrating another year in the life of our chapel. Two years ago we celebrated our 190th. anniversary with a busy weekend of activities. For my part I spent the Saturday playing through every hymn in Hymns and Psalms to raise funds to purchase copies of Singing the Faith, which we are enjoying very much. After reading a little of the history of Lea Chapel it set me thinking more about Upton, and, thanks to the work of the late, and very much loved Harold Jubbs, I can share a bit of Upton s history with you. Dissent was first recorded in the ecclesiastical parish of Upton in 1773, when several people known as Protestant Dissenters started worshipping at a home in Kexby, in the parish of Upton. The first person on the list of worshippers was that of Isaac Brown, a Methodist Minister stationed at Gainsborough and who was known by John Wesley as Honest Isaac Brown. Some years later, a group of people led by John Laughton (landlord of the village public house The Rose and Crown) enabled Upton Chapel to be built and opened for worship in The land for the Chapel was purchased for 2, from Mr. Joseph Turner, an ironmonger from Kirton Lindsey. People rented their seats to offset the expenses of the Chapel and collections were only taken on special days, or for special funds. The annual candle collection (providing light and limited heating), in 1894 amounted to 7shillings and 10pence. Collections were also taken for the Local preacher s horse hire fund.

There is no heating mentioned until 1853.The schoolroom was added in the 1850 s, and a new American Organ was purchased for 15 in This led to an increase in musical activity and the choir, at this time was described as the best choir in the circuit. A grant of 6 was given to the Chapel in 1901 from the Wesleyan Chapel Committee to pay off the remainder of the debt that existed at the Chapel. Please pray for our continuing work at Upton as we celebrate our anniversary this year, remembering all those that worked unstintingly to get us to the here and now and to pray for the Lord s help in assisting us with all that is to come in the future. God bless you! Until the next time! Jenny x "THE ROCK FOUNDATION Next time you visit Freshney Place in Grimsby, it would be well worth having a look at a new unit in Carter Gate, the little alleyway between the main stores and those in Baxtergate, which is the row further back. Of the two alleyways, Carter Gate is the one that's nearer the Market Hall. The Rock Foundation is a Christian charity associated with Holme Hill School, Heneage Road, Grimsby and its main feature is high quality homemade wooden items, such as picnic tables and storage units. If you have any unwanted jewellery of any kind, even damaged items, or any old and foreign banknotes and coins, or mobile phones in any condition, the Rock Foundation can make good use of them. Finally, for those of you who know Elaine Watkinson, one of our Circuit youth workers, her daughter is one of the people involved in running The Rock Foundation." Colin Hare
