9 How much Measure This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. John 3:16a, MSG

10 How Backstory 1-2 The Word was first, the Word present to God, God present to the Word. The Word was God, in readiness for God from day one. 3-5 Everything was created through him; nothing - not one thing! - came into being without him. What came into existence was Life, and the Life was Light to live by. The Life-Light blazed out of the darkness; the darkness couldn t put it out. John 1:1-2, 3-5 (MSG)

15 Why Romans 7: (MSG) I can anticipate the response that is coming: I know that all God s commands are spiritual, but I m not. Isn t this also your experience? Yes. I m full of myself - after all, I ve spent a long time in sin s prison. What I don t understand about myself is that I decide one way, but then I act another, doing things I absolutely despise. So if I can t be trusted to figure out what is best for myself and then do it, it becomes obvious that God s command is necessary.

16 Why Romans 7: (MSG) But I need something more! For if I know the law but still can t keep it, and if the power of sin within me keeps sabotaging my best intentions, I obviously need help! I realize that I don t have what it takes. I can will it, but I can t do it. I decide to do good, but I don t really do it; I decide not to do bad, but then I do it anyway. My decisions, such as they are, don t result in actions. Something has gone wrong deep within me and gets the better of me every time.

17 Why Romans 7: (MSG) It happens so regularly that it s predictable. The moment I decide to do good, sin is there to trip me up. I truly delight in God s commands, but it s pretty obvious that not all of me joins in that delight. Parts of me covertly rebel, and just when I least expect it, they take charge. 24 I ve tried everything and nothing helps. I m at the end of my rope. Is there no one who can do anything for me? Isn t that the real question?

18 Why Romans 7: (MSG) 25 The answer, thank God, is that Jesus Christ can and does. He acted to set things right in this life of contradictions where I want to serve God with all my heart and mind, but am pulled by the influence of sin to do something totally different.

19 Why Summary This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life. God didn t go to all the trouble of sending his Son merely to point an accusing finger, telling the world how bad it was. He came to help, to put the world right again. Anyone who trusts in him is acquitted; anyone who refuses to trust him has long since been under the death sentence without knowing it. And Why? Because of that person s failure to believe in the one-of-a-kind Son of God when introduced to him. John 3:16-18 (MSG)

Say the welcoming word to God - Jesus is my [Lord] - embracing, body and soul, God s work of doing in us what he did in raising Jesus from the dead. That s it. You re not doing anything; you re simply calling out to God, trusting him to do it for you. That s salvation. With your whole being you embrace God setting things right, and then you say it, right out loud: God has set everything right between him and me!
