2 The Reverend s Ramblings Early this week, Faith and I attended a seminar on The Spiritual Migration, by author Brian McClaren. He attempted to point out that the historic churches have been in a transitional mode for the past twenty years with church closings and downsizing all over America. McClaren points out that the mainline churches fit into, at least, three categories: 1. The repressive church or nostalgic church. 2. The eggshell church or the anxious church. 3. The progressive church or the missional church. Let s first look at number three the progressive church. According to McClaren, the progressive church experiments with various mission project in and outside the local church. They are not afraid to change what is traditional or what is comfortable for the mainstay of the congregation. It may mean changing the building, the worship or the people in leadership. It is a church that wants to promote the message of Christ so much that they are willing to be uncomfortable at some points. This is not to say that the church tears down all the traditions and conventions that have been around for decades. It only means that the church add some elements to attract new people, youth and young families to the church fellowship. No one is fearful that they will lose control of their previous power within the political structure of the local church. Instead they willfully share leadership with people who have new and fresh ideas. They compromise and revision the methods and ways of the existing community of faith. The repressive churches and eggshell churches speak for themselves. The first one is nostalgia for what was done in the good ol days, when the youth group was filled and the choir stood thirty voices strong. What was done in the 1950s and 60s doesn t work anymore in a 21st century environment. New paradigms must be explored and implemented in order to work today. The eggshell church is anxious and afraid to make waves. They rubberstamp decisions and let a few powerful people make plans for the group. They are afraid to argue and debate for fear some people or group will be offended and leave the church. The final analysis is: nothing goes forward and the church continues to decline. Which one of the three churches do you want Calvary to be? Regressive, eggshell or progressive? The next few months will be telling as things around us get shaken up and redirected. My love and prayers are with you ALL. Fellowship Nursing FELLOWSHIP VITALS EVERY SECOND SUNDAY Nurses: Sandy King Karen Feick Tiffiny Licht 2

6 CALVARY COMPASS May, 2017 Calvary Fellowship Garden A vegetable garden at Calvary to be used in the church kitchen for community meals, Fellowship Meals and other church meals (any church committee is welcome to use the produce). When/ if there is an abundance be distributed amongst the congregation and donated to CAMP. Goal to get the church congregation involved in caring for the garden, to teach the children how to care for a garden and show them the joy of growing their own food. Provide fresh vegetables free of pesticides to the church and community. And do our part in helping the bees. Sponsors Have members of the church donate plants, time, machinery. We would need donations for plants and/or seeds, tools, and other plant care items (such as tomato cages or stakes) and gas for the rototillers. We would also need volunteers to proved the use of rototillers. Water would be provided by Calvary by use of on the outdoor spigots. Could possibly catch rain water also. Along with vegetables, we plan on planting flowers to attract and feed the bees. This will be a pesticide free garden, to do our part in helping the environment. Please be sure to sign up before May 14th! Without volunteers we will not be able to make this a success. Remember Calvary in Your Will. 6

May 16 National Love a Tree Day Trees are a good thing. They give us shade, comfort and warmth. They give off oxygen, too. There are many, many benefits provided by trees. So, you have good reason to love a tree or two. Everyone has a favorite kind of tree. Use today to identify a tree you love, and to pamper it. Give it a trim. Eliminate competitors around it. Feed it a dose of fertilizer. Tree spikes work great. And, give the tree some water, if it is thirsty. Important Note: On Love a Tree Day, your attention must be turned toward trees. A bush or a shrub just won't do May 31st World No Tobacco Day brings awareness of the health issues and dependency issues related to tobacco use. World No Tobacco Day stresses the importance of making people all over the world aware of the health dangers of using tobacco. It also stresses the addictive nature of tobacco use. 7
