1 1 2 10/28/01 2Timothy 3 Paul the apostle has told Timothy that he needs to be courageous in Chapter one. Then in chapter two, Paul told him what he is called to be, a son, soldier, athlete, farmer, workman, vessel and servant. Now in chapter three, Paul tells Timothy what he needs to know regarding the last days. 1. Those who oppose truth are pointed out first. 2Tim. 3: Those who overcome by truth are indicated second. 2Tim. 3: :1-5 The last days deception. 3:1 The times to come. 1) The word but stands in sharp contrast to the preceding section in hope of repentance. a) Those taken captive by Satan were unaware of the deception of the last days. b) You on the other hand Timothy know. 2) The phrase the last days describes the time from Christ's first coming till rapture and second coming. Acts 2:17; Heb. 1:1-2; 2Pet. 3:3; 1Jn. 2:18 * The word for times is kairos for season or period of time. 3) The word perilous chalepos times of stress, fierce and difficult, dangerous times. 1Tim. 4:1-5 a)) The word appears one other time for the violent demoniac. Matt. 8:28 b) They will come, they seem to be still in the future yet certainty were present in Ephesus presently for Timothy is told to avoid these! Vs. 5 3:2 The characteristics of men in the last days that will bring about the stressful time. * The term for man is anthropos describing the race of mankind, not individual. 1) Lovers of themselves philautoi means self-love or selfish, appearing only this time. a)) The list begins with a two compound words and it ends with two compound words all describing the a life of self-love rather than love for God, leading to a life of ungodliness! b)) The list seems to fit into pairs. 2) Lovers of money philoargyroi means covetous or avarice, used of the Pharisees. Lk. 16:14
2 3 4 * The noun form is found in First Timothy, the love of money is a root of all evil. 1Tim. 6:5, ) Boasters alazones means imposters or braggarts, empty pretenders, originally used for a quack doctor peddling medicines that could cure all. Rom. 1:30 4) Proud hyperephanoi literally means showing oneself above another 5) Blasphemers blasphemoi are those who speak evil, abusive slander. 6) Disobedient to parents means rebellious. Rom. 1:30 * The next one till verse four all begin with the letter a indicating the negative. 7) Unthankful acharistoi means showing no gratitude, appearing two times. Lk. 6:35 8) Unholy Anosioi describing a person who has not fellowship with God and living by the world s standards. 3:3 The characteristics of men in the last days continued. 9) Unloving Astorgoi means without natural affection or family love, appearing twice. Rom. 1:31 10) Unforgiving aspondoi means a trucebreakers, one who refusal to enter a treaty or covenant, irreconcilable, this is the only appearance. 11) Slanderers diabolos means false accusers, with the article is used for the Devil. 2Tim. 2:16 12) Without self control akrateis describing lack of control over self in general but more specifically to the body lusts, being without strength and easily led into sin. 13) Brutal anemeroi means not tamed, savage and fierce. 14) Dispicers of good aphilagathoi, means not lovers of the good, things pure or honorable. Tit. 1:8; Is. 5:20 3:4 The characteristics men in the last days continued 15) Traitors prodotai means betrayers and it is used of Judas. Lk. 6:16 16) Headstrong propeteis means falling forwards headlong, implying being rash and reckless. 17) Haughty tetyphomenoi means highmindedness, puffed up and conceited. 18) Lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God phiedonoi versus philoltheoi the things of the world or God. Rom. 1:25 * Lovers of pleasure is compose of two words, one is hedonai we get our English word hedonism from it
3 5 6 3:5 The identity of such men. 1) They have a form morphosin an outline or semblance of godliness outwardly being religious. 1Tim. 4:3; 2Tim. 4:2-4 2) They deny the power dunamis of godliness by refused to yield to Holy Spirit to save and transform. 2Tim. 1:7; Tit. 1:16 * The power of the Holy Spirit is synanynus with the gospel! 3) The command is that from such people Timothy is to turn away! a) The word is apotrepou to turn away from, not be one with them. b) This is the only time it appears on the New Testament. 3:6-9 The activities of such individuals in their deception. 3:6 The deceptive tactics. 1) They creep into houses endyno means to worm in by a garment of deception and trickery. Jude 4 2) They make captives of gullible women loaded down win sins as a captive of war. * Describing their converts characteristics. a) Literally to be taken captive in war but here by a garment of deceit, a form of godliness. b) The are gullible gynaikaria, literally little women, a phrase of contempt, silly women. c) They are leaded down with sins soreuo which means to heap upon describing their life style, one of living in sin. 1Tim. 2:11-12; 4:7, 9-14 d) They are led away by various lusts, moved by passions of the flesh. 3:7 The insincerity of these women. 1) They are always learning. a) They have itchie ears. 2Tim. 4:3 b) They have no stability of loyalty. 2) And never able to come to the knowledge of he truth. a) The word of knowledge epignosis means full and complete knowledge of the truth b) The truth here being used for the gospel. 3:8-9 The defeat of the false teachers. 3:8 Their nature. 1) The false teachers are compared to Jannes and Jambres who resisted Moses. Ex. 7:11; 9:11 * Their name come to us from the Qumran literature.
4 7 8 2) The false teachers are identified as resisting the truth. 3) The reason is that they are men of corrupt minds and disapproved concerning the faith. 1Cor. 9:27 a) Corrupt kataphtheiro depraved and utterly wicked. b) Disapproved adokimoi means rejected after testing of the faith. 3:8 Their destiny. 1) They will progress no further being men of corrupt minds and disapproved concerning the faith. 2) The reason being that their folly will be manifested to all, even as Jannes and Jambres. 3:10-17 The defense against such deception. 3:10 The benefit of Timothy s discipleship by Paul. 1) The word But places Timothy in sharp contrast to the false teachers. 2) The personal pronoun you is emphatic of Timothy have carefully followed parakoloutheo meaning to follow closely along side to investigate and see the character of Paul throughout various aspects of life. a) My doctrine didaskalia the content and Scriptural accuracy of the Scriptures. b) My manner of life agoge describes his conduct and practiced according to what he preached c) My purpose of faith pothesis pistis his faithfulness to the purposes of God to glorify and please God, in Jesus Christ. d) My longsuffering makrothymia his patient endurance towards people. e) My love agape means love by Holy Spirit no his own. Matt. 5:10-12 h) My afflictions pathemasin his sufferings. Jn. 16:33; 2Cor. 12:9-10 3) All which took place during Paul s second missionary journey. a) At Antioch. Acts 13:50 b) At Iconium. Acts 14:5-6 c) At Lystra. Acts 14:14, ) And out of them all the Lord delivered me. 2Cor. 1:10; 11:24-33; 2Tim. 4: :12 The principle of godliness.
5 9 10 1) All who desire to live godly will suffer persecution. a) Those who allow Jesus to change them. 1Thess. 3:2-3 b) Those who believe the word of God. 2) Jesus said, marvel not that the world hate you. Acts 14:22; Phil. 1:29; 1Pet. 4:12-13; 1Jn. 3:13 3:13 The principle of evil. 1) But evil men and imposters will grow worse and worse. a) The reference is to wax worse, advance, increase, progress in evilness b) The imposter goes originally meant a wailer, howler, then a enchanter due to the incantations howled. c) Life contrast will be evident. 2) Their efforts will be deceiving and being deceived. a) They deceive others. b) They continue to deceive themselves. 3:14 The prevention for Timothy. 1) You must continue in the things you have learned and been assured of. a) The gospel message. b) The affirmation of the gospel message. 1Tim. 4:16 2) Knowing from whom you have learned them. a) Paul the apostle of Jesus Christ. b) Paul his spiritual father. - abide, Jn. 15 3:15 The foundation of Timothy s faith. 1) From childhood he had known the holy Scriptures of the Old Testament. 2Tim. 1:5 2) Which are able to make him wise for salvation. a) The Scriptures are God love letter to the lost world of mankind. b) The Scriptures are God s history of salvation from the fall to His second coming. c) The Scriptures make you godly. 3) Through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
