1 ~ A MESSAGE FROM PASTOR ALISON ~ THE EPISTLE St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church December 2018 SUNDAY MORNING SCHEDULE 9:00 A.M. Worship with Holy Communion 10:15 A.M. Coffee & Fellowship 10:30 A.M. Faith Formation Hour DECEMBER 2018 St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church Non-profit Org. 201 S. Main Street POSTAGE PAID Spring Grove, PA Hanover, PA RETURN SERVICE REQUESTED Permit #170 For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His authority shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peace for the throne of David and his kingdom. He will establish and uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time onward and forevermore. Isaiah 9: 6-7 My favorite childhood memory of Christmas was sitting in church at the candlelight service on Christmas Eve. If I close my eyes tight enough, I can hear the hymn, Silent Night playing on the organ and my great grandma s shaky voice. I can smell the wax burning. I can see the faces of my family members and my church family shining in the darkness. I can feel the palpable anticipation of what was happening. It was finally here, the night of all nights, the day we had been counting down for what felt like forever, the night when the savior of the world, the hope of all hope would grace us with his presence. In that moment, when all the world was at peace, I could feel love being born among my most favorite people. To me, that moment is what Christmas is all about. As you run around caught up in the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season, I pray that you would take a moment to sit back and look around you, to pause and enjoy the happiness and the laughter and see Christ in your neighbor. I pray that you would remember that what actually is important has nothing to do with the gifts placed perfectly under the Christmas tree, or with the food sitting on your dining room table, but instead is a beautiful baby wrapped in clothes and lying in a manger, the hope of the world, the greatest gift ever given, love come down for the sake of the world. Don t be distracted. Christ is coming. I pray that as a part of your Christmas celebrations you would plan to join us for worship on Christmas Eve at one or more of our services, each one a little different. At 4:00pm we will have Family worship. At 8:00pm we will have service of the word and candlelight. At 10:30pm we will have our Christ-mass service, celebrating communion as we gather around the manger. Come! Come and join us as worship Christ the Newborn King.

2 WORSHIP - ADVENT & CHRISTMAS WORSHIP NEWS ADVENT MEANS TO COME Advent marks the beginning of the church year, and is a period of spiritual preparation in which we make ourselves ready for the coming, or birth of the Lord, Jesus Christ. Advent is a rich season that emphasizes waiting, preparing, and hoping for the Savior, Jesus. It is a time to pray, Come, Lord Jesus. Themes of this Church Season: Hope, Darkness/Light, Repentance, Watchfulness, Preparation, Expectation of the incarnation of Christ on Christmas, Anticipation of the fullness of time at Christ s return. THE VOICES OF ADVENT ADVENT WREATH LIGHTING This year, enjoy four biblical monologues during our Advent wreath candle lighting at the start of Sunday worship. Isaiah, The Prophet Elizabeth Tamar, The Innkeeper s Wife Itzhak, The Young Shepherd Thank you to the St. Paul members working hard to prepare and share these special reflections and help us draw closer to the story of Christ s birth. CHRISTMAS EVE - DECEMBER 24 4:00 PM - Family Service A 45-min interactive worship service designed for families and friends. Each household is invited to take home an ornament for their tree, and children will receive a gift: magazines filled with bible stories and activities to use at home. ~ After the 4:00pm Service ~ Hot Chocolate Cafe 8:00 PM - Candlelight Service Service of the Word (No Communion) 10:30 PM - Candlelight Christ s-mass Holy Communion Service 1st SUNDAY OF CHRISTMAS DECEMBER 30 9:00 AM - Service of Lessons & Carols PHOTOS OF INSTALLATION & ALL SAINTS CELEBRATION A wonderful album of pictures from our All Saint s & Installation celebration is available to view online. Be sure to visit the St. Paul Facebook page. DOES THE BULLETIN LOOK DIFFERENT? This summer, Worship & Music undertook a Bulletin Review project to evaluate the effectiveness of this worship tool for our visitors, people new to church, and members with accessibility or caregiving concerns. We collected over twenty bulletins from churches both in our synod and churches with whom members had connections. After reviewing these samples, and generating a list of features we found beneficial to our worship and culture at St. Paul, we designed a mock-up that was within our current budget for materials and production. (Perhaps you have already noticed that this fall, we began inserting more parts of the service into the bulletin? This was Step One!) Over the next two months, we expect to share with you more features we LOVE and feel will benefit our ministry here in Spring Grove. We are excited to share with you the fruits of this labor, excited for the accessibility it will provide for many who are newer to Lutheran worship, and give thanks for the many hands and hours that went into this work. We also give thanks for Pastor Alison s full support and adaptability, as the decision work was mostly completed before she arrived; it was certainly a large project for her to walk into on Day One. We look forward to sharing with you more about the new look and layout of our worship bulletin over the next few months! PASS THE PEACE, IN PEACE... Have you noticed the new addition to our pew racks during worship? In October, when our families gathered for Family Night, they labeled and placed hand sanitizers in every pew. We invite you to use this hand sanitizer during the cold and flu season to assist in sharing the peace and taking part in Holy Communion confidently and joyfully! This hand sanitizer was given and prepared with love as a service project of St. Paul Children, Youth, and Family Ministry. GOSPEL PROCESSION THANKFULNESS This fall, with the help of our Confirmation Class, we began a new tradition/worship practice at St. Paul. On Festival Sundays, we are highlighting the reading of the Gospel with a Gospel Procession. The procession will carry the cross, lights/torches, and bible to the center of the congregation. The congregation should turn and follow the cross as it passes. The two lights carried at the gospel are both a token of joy and a symbol of Christ, the light of the world (John 8:12). We are excited to share this special moment in worship, and are thankful for the enthusiasm and participation of our confirmation students!

We gather, settle in, light a candle, and allow silence to fall. With slow breaths, we listen.. And then...we talk to God. We give thanks for all the good we see, and ask for help for that which is hard. In the flame, we are reminded that God is Light, and The Light casts out the dark. ONLINE BIBLE STUDY - JAN 2019 After the new year, Pastor Alison will begin offering a Tuesday night bible study online via ZOOM. This will be a study and discussion on the weekly lectionary text for the upcoming Sunday. Looking for faith-filled gifts for the holiday season? One of our favorite publishers has sent us a kit of family favorites available to order and arrive before Christmas. Be sure to stop by the table and see what may be in store for the children & youth in your life! It s not always easy to find time, a candle, or a safe place to light it. So at our last youth event, we talked about how we can practice candle-prayer on our own using what most of us have on us at all times: our phone! If you explore the app store, you will find multiple free apps for candlelight. Download your favorite and grant yourself a few minutes before bed or another time during the day to pause, listen, and give thanks! WORSHIP TOOL BAGS Kids & Caregivers! This December, check out the new tote bags outside the entrance to the sanctuary from the Fellowship Hall. We have a prereader bag, and a reader bag filled with supplies for you to use during worship! Follow the instruction card, enjoy worshiping God, and then return your bag to the pick-up location for use next week! ADULT FORUM: Devotions & Discussion Join friends each week at 10:30am in the basement classroom to discuss a new devotion/topic. Raegan Ross will convene the class, share the provided weekly devotional and open discussion time. Others may volunteer to take home and read the next week s devotional and prepare some thoughts. Contact Raegan for more info. (If a specific devotional topic is requested, Sara and Pastor Alison can provide a resource. Just let us know!)
