The liturgical color for the season of Pentecost is green. Green is the color of vegetation, living things and the promise of new life. It is used for the Seasons of Epiphany and Pentecost. As we speak of Pentecost Sunday as the birth of the Church, so the lengthy Pentecost season reflects the life and growth of the church. Today s altar flowers are in remembrance of Norm Woelber s birthday, given by Marla Woelber & family. At our 8:30am worship service today, we receive new members. A special welcome to these individuals joining Bethany: Emily Baker, Dave & Pat Spenst. During this process the patient census will not be accessible to clergy and lay visitors. If you become a patient at the hospital and wish to be visited you will need to personally reach out to the church and provide us with your contact/room information as it will not be available at the front desk. Patients who request clergy outreach will be assisted by hospital staff to make contact with either their regular clergy or another authorized clergy member. NOTES OF THANKS Thank you to our Bethany family for your love and support following the death of my mom. The cards, visits, food, hugs, kind words, memorials and prayers were of great comfort to all of us. Special thanks to Pr. John, Onalee, and Pr. Jen for providing for mom s (and our) spiritual needs while she was at St. Luke s and especially during her last few days. God has blessed us with fond memories and surrounded us with caring friends. Jamie Huber REFORMATION 500: OUR MUSICAL HERITAGE In celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, Stephen presents the following exploration of today s worship music: Dietrich Buxtehude ( ), a Danish-born organist in the German Lutheran church, is considered now to be one of the most influential composers and teachers of his period. His music heavily influenced J.S. Bach. His Toccata in F (today s prelude) is a typical example of the virtuosic, often improvisatory music employed during concerts and worship services at the time. The organs that Buxtehude and his Lutheran contemporaries played were massive and loud, built to accompany large congregations singing Lutheran hymns; although the music is often thunderously heavy, it still manages to evoke light and joy.

3 The Kyrie Eleison from Setting 8 in ELW was written in 1989 by Larry Olson, a songwriter and member of the band Dakota Road in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Although the style of this particular setting was influenced by popular genres of the 1980 s, the words Kyrie Eleison are Greek for Lord have mercy and have been a regular part of Christian worship since the early church. Today s postlude is by the Italian composer Domenico Zipoli ( ). Organs like the ones Zipoli played in the Roman Catholic church were very different than those familiar to Buxtehude, and they served a very different purpose. Instead of accompanying hymns (Catholics would not sing congregational song until the Second Vatican Council in the 1960 s), these small organs would add flourish and occupy the long silences during the movements of the priest in the old rite. Influenced by opera of the time, they were often equipped with ingenious novelties such as drum roll machines and mechanical birdsong generators (wouldn t that be fun on a modern organ!). All Offertorio is a march written to accompany the procession of bread and wine from the back of the cathedral to the altar during mass. ANNOUNCEMENTS FUN & FELLOWSHIP Thursday, August 10, the church basement ladies will gather at about 9am for Fun & Fellowship as they work on quilts and assembling kits for Lutheran World Relief. All are welcome! A potluck lunch is shared at noon. Can t make it to Fun & Fellowship? You can still help donate items for the kits or make a cash donation and the ladies will do the shopping for you. Back-to-school sales are in full swing, so this is a great time to shop for the school kits. Look for a special display next Sunday (August 13) with more information and an opportunity to make a donation. CHRISTMAS AT BETHANY This biennial event of Bethany will happen this year on Saturday, December 9. Be sure to save the date! A Christmas at Bethany planning meeting is set for Monday, August 14 at 6pm in the church parlor. Lots of volunteers are needed to help make this a success. Please attend this meeting to find out how you can be involved. Thanks! MONTHLY FOOD DRIVE Our monthly food drive for the Upper Des Moines Outreach Food Pantry typically spans the second full week of each month. However, in conjunction with the August Loving Spencer project (see next page), you are encouraged to bring donations to Bethany anytime this month and leave them in the collection baskets at the Welcome Center. We will deliver them to the UDMO Pantry. Thank you for your support of this mission! PICK UP CHOIR OPPORTUNITY Sunday, August 20 offers another opportunity to join the choir for a day. Anyone is welcome to join in singing Lord, I Lift Your Name on High arranged by Gary Rhodes. We will meet in the front of the sanctuary at 10:30 to rehearse and we will sing at the beginning of the 11:00 service. Come join us for this easy arrangement of a classic 1980 s contemporary praise song! THE GATHERING COMMUNITY MEAL Bethany s community outreach meals starts back up in October. Want to be involved? Come to a planning meeting Tues. Aug. 22, 4:45pm in the parlor!

4 USHER OPENINGS WEEK 2 We have a couple openings for ushers at the 8:30 worship service for the second week of the month. If you are able and would like to join the weekly rotation of ushers or if you have questions about ushering, please visit with Kirby Schmidt. Thanks! TECHNOLOGY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Video recorders and projector operators are needed for our worship services. Both are a process that you can learn and we are willing to train. If you would like to be a part of this technology ministry please sign up at the Welcome Center. We will contact you regarding training. Thanks! FALL WORSHIP VOLUNTEER SCHEDULE The September-November worship volunteer sign-up forms are out. Please sign up to help as a worship volunteer as you are able. Need to check your calendar first? ST LUKE ROUND UP Sunday, August 20 is Bethany s turn to help round-up residents at St. Luke for worship. If you d like to help, please sign-up at the Welcome Center. If you re a first-timer, a pink sheet with instructions is available by the sign-up sheet. Thanks for considering to help with this mission! LOVING SPENCER AUGUST Loving Spencer is focusing this month on Filling the Storehouses. Many thanks to Bethany members who volunteered to help at the Mobile Food Pantry sponsored by Spencer Seventh Day Adventist Church & Food Bank of Iowa last Tuesday. For the remainder of August our focus is to help fill the storehouse by making a donation of nonperishable food items or toiletries to Upper Des Moines Outreach Food Pantry. You can either leave donations in the baskets marked Food Pantry at the Welcome Center or take you donations directly to the UDMO pantry at their new location, th Avenue E, Suite 2. August can be an exceptionally difficult month for families to make ends meet, sometimes having to choose between registering kids for school and buying groceries. Thanks for helping! HOW IT WORKS: Purchase non-perishable food items or toiletries for the Food Pantry Take items directly to Upper Des Moines or the Welcome Center at Bethany Organize a food drive, or challenge your friends, families or church congregation to donate Pray for the workers and volunteers that help supply food, and pray for the families and individuals that need the food
