1 We are all strangers in a strange land, longing for home, but not quite knowing what or where home is. We glimpse it sometimes in our dreams, or as we turn a corner, and suddenly there is a strange, sweet familiarity that vanishes almost as soon as it comes. ~ Madeleine L'Engle December 16, 2018 The Third Sunday of Advent W elcome to Roland Park Presbyterian Church. Walk with us in the time of Advent, so that through our journey our trust and faith may be renewed. Amen. ASSURANCE OF GOD S LOVE Time for Silent Reflection Let us proclaim the good news of God s love to one another: God loves us and refuses to give up on us. Because of God s persistence we are made new again and again. Thanks be to God. Amen. *GLORIA *PASSING THE PEACE TIME FOR ALL GOD S CHILDREN HYMN #91 (seated) Come, Come Emmanuel COME, COME EMMANUEL PRAYER FOR UNDERSTANDING
5 GOD S STORY Isaiah 42: 1-9 Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. He will not cry or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; a bruised reed he will not break, and a dimly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. He will not grow faint or be crushed until he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his teaching. Thus says God, the Lord, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it: I am the Lord, I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations, to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. I am the Lord, that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to idols. See, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth, I tell you of them. One: All: For the Word of God in Scripture, For the Word of God among us, For the Word of God within us, Thanks be to God.
6 LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT CANDLES Isaiah the prophet spoke truth to the nations. He yearned for the Lord s good word to proclaim freedom for prisoners stuck in darkness. (light candle 1) We still yearn, but yearning leads to hope. We light this candle as a sign that this hope never ends. (light candle 2) We light this candle, trusting God s peace will come. (light candle 3) The third, the flame of love, points to God s infinite compassion the promise of God-with-us, the one to fill our lives with the love of Christ for his friends. MESSAGE IN MUSIC Christmas Cantata Chancel Choir, Brass & Organ Daniel Pinkham I. Quem vidistis pastores? (Shepherds tell us the story) Whom did you see, shepherds, say, tell us: who has appeared on earth? The new-born we saw and choirs of angels praising the Lord, alleluia! II. III. O magnum mysterium (O great mystery) O great mystery and wonderful sacrament, that animals should see the newborn Lord lying in a manger! O blessed is the Virgin, whose womb was worthy to bear Christ the Lord. Alleluia! Gloria in excelsis Deo (Glory to God in the highest) Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace and goodwill to all people. O be joyful in the Lord, all you nations. Serve the Lord with gladness. Serve him all of you. Come into his presence with singing, and with joy and exultation. Know that the Lord is God and that he is strong and mighty. He has created us, and not we ourselves. Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace and goodwill to all people. Alleluia! *HYMN #129 Lo, How a Rose E er Blooming ES IST EIN ROS
