December 6 & 9, 2018 St. John s Evangelical Lutheran Church & School 624 East Street, Baraboo, WI Church Office School Office churchoffice@stjohnsbaraboo.org
2 nd Sunday of Advent December 6 & 9, 2018 WELCOME TO ST. JOHN S We re thrilled that you are here today. Please sign the Friendship Register at the end of your pew so that we have a record of your visit. And please come and worship with us again. Please also introduce yourself to Pastor Kuske. He would love to meet you and to serve you in whatever way he can. OUR FACILITIES Our restrooms are located to the right as you leave the sanctuary in the Mother s Room and downstairs next to the exit. The members of St. John s believe that families should be encouraged to worship together. (Church, like much of life, needs to be taught to young children.) If your young one needs some time out, we have a TV-equipped Mother s Room just outside the sanctuary to your right. If you need anything during the service, please feel free to ask an usher. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY Anticipation builds as the account of John the Baptist/Baptizer marks fulfillment of yet another promise of the Lord, and signals that the Lord s salvation is at hand. The messenger proclaims impending fulfillment and commands preparation for the arrival of the greater messenger of the covenant. The judgment is coming; prepare the way for the Lord s salvation. PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP O Lord, you have made ready the way of your only-begotten Son into our hearts through baptism, that bless the faith you have created for our eternal good and for our earthly comfort and confidence; for Christ lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen. Please Note Today s service is video-recorded and will be aired on our local cable channel at 12 pm today. If you would like a DVD copy of the service, please speak with Pastor Kuske after the service. 2
SERVICE OF THE WORD page 38 of Christian Worship THE RINGING OF THE BELLS and WELCOME TO GOD S HOUSE HYMN Blest Be the God of Israel (Benedictus) Christian Worship, 275 3
PLEASE STAND INVOCATION M: The grace of our Lord (+) Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you. C: And also with you. CONFESSION OF SINS M: We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve him as his dear children. But we have disobeyed him and deserve only his wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to him and plead for his mercy. C: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt. M: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, he has removed your guilt forever. You are his own dear child. May God give you strength to live according to his will. C: Amen. 4
PRAYER AND PRAISE M: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord. OH, TASTE AND SEE 5
PRAYER OF THE DAY M: Let us pray. Stir up our hearts, O Lord, to make ready the way of your only-begotten Son, that at his second coming we may be confident in peace with our God and we may worship him in purity; for Christ lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. C: Amen. THE WORD FIRST LESSON Malachi 3:1-4 See, I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come, says the LORD Almighty. 2 But who can endure the day of his coming? Who can stand when he appears? For he will be like a refiner s fire or a launderer s soap. 3 He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; he will purify the Levites and refine them like gold and silver. Then the LORD will have men who will bring offerings in righteousness, 4 and the offerings of Judah and Jerusalem will be acceptable to the LORD, as in days gone by, as in former years. 6
PSALM Psalm 24 Christian Worship, page 73 The earth is the LORD S, and everything in it,* the world, and all who live in it; for he founded it upon the seas* and established it upon the waters. Who may ascend the hill of the LORD?* Who may stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart,* he will receive blessing from God his Savior. Refrain Lift up your heads, O you gates; be lifted up, you ancient doors,* that the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of glory?* The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle. Lift up your heads, O you gates; lift them up, you ancient doors,* that the King of glory may come in. Who is he, this King of glory?* The LORD Almighty he is the King of glory. Glory be to the Father and to the Son* and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,* is now, and will be forever. Amen. 8 CHILDREN S MESSAGE EPISTLE LESSON 1 Corinthians 4:1-5 So then, men ought to regard us as servants of Christ and as those entrusted with the secret things of God. 2 Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful. 3 I care very little if I am judged by you or by any human court; indeed, I do not even judge myself. 4 My conscience is clear, but that does not make me innocent. It is the Lord who judges me. 5 Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait until the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of men s hearts. At that time each will receive his praise from God. Carol for Advent Nancy Price and Don Besig Senior Choir (Sunday) Amid the winter s cold embrace, Clothed in a shroud of white, And anxious world in silence waits Through the dark of night As the lonely song of a dove Echoes across the sky above, We can feel the moment is near; Soon, the Child of Peace will appear. What child is this, the world awaits With quiet expectation? When will He come, the promised one, To bring us peace and salvation? Raise, raise your prayers on high. Prepare His way, the time is nigh. Come, come, Emmanuel, O Child of Love and Peace. The air grows colder, the light grows dim, Dark ning the sky above. 8
But soon the chill of the winter wind Will warm with God s gift of love. And a star will brighten the sky; Songs of joy will echo on high! We will know the moment is her; The Child of Love and Peace will appear. GOSPEL Luke 3:1-6 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene 2 during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John, son of Zechariah, in the desert. 3 He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 4 As is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet: A voice of one calling in the desert, Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him. 5 Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill made low. The crooked roads shall become straight, the rough ways smooth. 6 And all mankind will see God s salvation. 9
HYMN Oh Jesus, Lamb of God, You Are Christian Worship, 27 SERMON Mark 16:16 The Blessings of Baptism Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. Second: What does Baptism do for us? Baptism works forgiveness of sin, delivers from death and the devil and gives eternal salvation to all who believe this, as the words and promises of God declare. What is God's promise? Christ our Lord says in the last chapter of Mark, "Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned." 10
APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. THANKSGIVING THANK OFFERING PRAYER OF THE CHURCH 11
LORD S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen. HYMN Arise, O Christian People Christian Worship, 14 12
PRAYER M: O Lord God, our heavenly Father, pour out the Holy Spirit on your faithful people. Keep us strong in your grace and truth, protect and comfort us in all temptation, and bestow on us your saving peace, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. 13
BLESSING M: Brothers and sisters, go in peace. Live in harmony with one another. Serve the Lord with gladness. The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and (+) give you peace. C: Amen. Amen. Amen. HYMN Comfort, Comfort All My People Christian Worship, 11 14

School Announcements 3K Christmas Party: The TAC- and Thrivent-sponsored 3K Christmas Party took place on November 28 th as an outreach event for Mrs. Cindy Allen s 3K families. The party was a huge success!! Seventeen of the eighteen 3K children attended with their families for a total of 85 attendees. Everyone had a wonderful time. Mrs. Allen handed out gift bags with church information inside to each family. The children had several activities to do, including crafts, games, and face painting. The parents also participated in a bingo game to get to know one another. They had to go around and find someone at the party that was described in each square (i.e. - someone who is a veterinarian, someone who was born in another country, etc.). Pastor and his crew of St. John s school boys helped set up and take down the tables and chairs. He and Andrew spent some time there mingling with people. Volunteers included Ron and Kathy Voss and Martha and Eugene Phelps, who helped from set up through tear down. Gloria Bartel volunteered by face painting. We also had a nonmember volunteer. Kathy Underwood hosted a 4K open house at this time, and quite a few 3K families went to visit her room. Six families picked up registration packets and a couple expressed interests in joining the church. Thanks to all who helped with this outreach event! Children s Christmas Service: The Children s Christmas Service is this Saturday on December 15 th at 2 pm. It will include children from the School and the Sunday School. This Service will be aired on television Channel 43 at 1 pm on Christmas Day. If you would like a DVD recording of this service, please notify the church office. 19
