Help us to pray continually or at least always be in a spirit of prayer. Thank you for troubles to come, that we may be strengthened and directed according to your will. As we begin this New Year, do we have faith in God's provision? To do so is to take our Savior at His word when He said, Do not worry about your life...do not worry about tomorrow (Matt.6:25,34). Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrows or woes; it empties today of its faith, its joys. Growing spiritually is a life-long process. To continue and grow in our Christian journey, read the Scriptures regularly to increase your understanding of God. Attend Bible Study if you can to get another point of view. And make prayer a daily part of your life. PRAY EVERY DAY. When you're scarred, overwhelmed, frustrated; just call on Jesus. There is power in His name, Jesus. Ask for His help, for his direction, for His strength. Our spiritual journey continues as long as we want it to - as long as we believe and pray. God will answer. January, according to many US calendars, is National Thank you Month. The Scriptures say, beginning with Psalm 136, which begins and ends with, Oh, give thanks (vv.1,26). Again and again in chapter 136 we are reminded of a single, overriding reason to bestow our gratitude on our great God: His mercy endures forever. We could spend the whole month learning about gratitude from Psalm 136. As we think through Psalm 136, we can easily find something to thank God for every day of this Thank You Month. What better way to start off a new year than to concentrate on conveying our thanks to our Lord! Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever. When you think of all that's good, give thanks to God. If or when we feel estranged from God or spiritually weak, we need to find spiritual nourishment from God and His Word. Ask god to give you a renewed desire for relationship with Him, and begin feeding your heart, soul, and mind with His Word. I thank God every day: for the day; for His son. Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior; for my Galilee family; for relative good health: for my husband and family. I walk and talk with God as much as I can remember. I pray. So again I ask for your prayers and I pray for all of you. May the Blessings of God be upon you and yours during this Thank You Month and through out the New Year. Peace be with you all, Sharon Schmidt Galilee Lutheran Church Council President
2 Volu me 8 issu e 1 Upcoming Events at Galilee Sunday, January 1 We are kicking off the new year with a 9:00 am breakfast in the Community Center, followed by a 10:00 service led by Debra Blum. The tentative theme is Putting the Past Behind Us Re-forming the Future. There is a Church Council meeting (the last one for four of us) planned directly following the service. Sunday, January 8 Baptism Sunday Jesus baptism, that is. 10:00 service led by Doug Andre, followed by a Worship and Music Ministry meeting. Sunday, January 15 Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend. Church service at 10:00 am led by Craig Waters. Sunday, January 22 Kristy Weiss will lead the church service. Sunday, January 29 The second half of the annual Congregational Meeting. We ll look at reports from the various ministries, identify where we need to improve ourselves, and look at what our focus for 2017 will be. Come join the discussion! On the same Sunday, at the 10:00 service, we will install the new Church Council. That is also a 5th Sunday, so the offering will go entirely toward the mortgage principal payment. And we are planning a service of Healing for that day. As the year progresses, we will be spending more time celebrating (and learning about) the 500th Anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. We will also be spending time discussing our own (and Galilee s) constant reformation. Look for potlucks, movies, activities, games and other exciting diversions! Galilee has its own website ( address (galileekelseyville@gmail.com), and FaceBook page. Visit our website and FaceBook page regularly to keep up on current events. Comment, discuss, and debate! Pag e 2 Fifty-one people enjoy Galilee s annual Christmas Eve Candle Light Service
3 V o l u m e 8 i s s u e 1 P ag e 3 Lakeport Warming Center Opens On December 24th, the Lakeport Warming Center, a project of the Lake County Ministerial Association, opened at the Lakeport Seventh Day Adventist Church on Hill Road. The significance of opening on Christmas Eve was not lost on anyone. Galilee's first opportunity to staff the center came on Monday, December 26th. All went well, as we were able to provide a warm and place to sleep, showers, food and companionship to our most vulnerable and neglected neighbors. Thanks to Laisné Hamilton, team leader (and Bob, who always tags along). Galilee members Kris and Stephen Stocker supplied the most excellent beef stew EVER! Craig Waters and Matt spent the night as the "sleepers" on call in case of emergency. A big hit were fresh home-grown oranges supplied by Janis Andre (who also donated clothes). Also popular were the brownies and cookies from John and Bette Mueller. Pastor Dawn Roberts of Clearlake Oaks Methodist helped with intake and salad, and Deborah Smith of St. John's Episcopal gave of her time and breakfast bags. Robert of the Lucerne church-in-the-park transported people from downtown Lakeport in the absence of Lake Transit buses over the holiday. Several other volunteers lent their time and talents to the shelter. Donations have also been made over the past months by Galilee members, the Grace Fund, and the offering from the Ministerial Association Thanksgiving service. The homeless people served expressed their thanks to their Christian neighbors who care in ways the city and county evidently do not (their thoughts). Normally, Lake Transit will pick up and drop off people every morning and evening. In a year when a city like Sacramento is seeing a dramatic rise in homeless deaths on the streets, and we have had at least one memorial service this fall for a Lake County resident who died at least partly due to homelessness, it is up to us to demonstrate the love and compassion of Jesus. Sound familiar? It's in Galilee's mission statement. If you'd like to be involved, there are many opportunities to do so. See Laisné or Bob Hamilton for ideas. Galilee is committed to every Monday night through the beginning of April, but the center is open Monday through Friday and other teams are looking for volunteers, too. "As you do this for the least of these my brothers and sisters, you do it for me." --Jesus Christ

5 V o l u m e 8 i s s u e 1 A Little Humor for the New Year My New Years Resolutions I will not throw the cat out the window Or put a frog in my sister s bed I will not tie my brother s shoelaces together Nor jump from the roof of Dad s shed I shall remember my aunt s next birthday And tidy my room once a week I ll not moan at Mum s cooking (Ugh! fish fingers again!) Nor give her any more of my cheek. I will not pick my nose if I can help it I shall fold up my clothes, comb my hair, I will say please and thank you (even when I don t mean it) And never spit or shout or even swear. I shall write each day in my diary Try my hardest to be helpful at school I shall help old ladies cross roads (even if they don t want to) And when others are rude I ll stay cool. I ll go to bed with the owls and be up with the larks And close every door behind me I shall squeeze from the bottom of every toothpaste tube And stay where trouble can t find me. shall start again, turn over a new leaf, leave my bad old ways forever shall I start them this year, or next year shall I sometime, or..? Robert Fisher P ag e 5 Recipe of the Month Recipe for a Happy New Year Take twelve whole months, clean them thoroughly of all bitterness, hate, and jealousy. Make them just as fresh and clean as possible. Now cut each month in to twenty-eight, thirty, thirty-one different parts, but don't make up the whole batch at once. Prepare it one day at a time out of these ingredients. Mix well into each day one part of faith, one part of patience, one part of courage, and one part of work. Add to each day one part of hope, faithfulness, generosity, and kindness. Blend with one part prayer, one part meditation, and one good deed. Season the whole with a dash of good spirits, a sprinkle of fun, a pinch of play, and a cupful of good humor. Pour all of this into a vessel of love. Cook thoroughly over radiant joy, garnish with a smile, and serve with quietness, unselfishness, and cheerfulness. Your final results may vary depending on your attitude. Have a Happy New Year!
