Unitarian Church of Hinsdale 17 W. Maple Hinsdale, IL Sunday Services begin at 10:30 a.m. Childcare and education services are available. Minister Pam Rumancik Director of Programs Pam Fodor Director of Operations Linda Liberacki Board of Trustees Liz Reyes, President Emily Crement, Vice-President Steve Trout, Treasurer Mike Pabian, Secretary Trustees at Large Susan Mooney Patrick Provenzale Monica Acosta Submissions Editor Linda Karlen Editor/Layout Kim Ryan Nancy Kranz The church year started with a rush of activity and some good steady participation. At a special congregational meeting at the end of September, the assembled gathering voted overwhelmingly to move forward with the Green Home Capital project. This visionary campaign will reshape the infrastructure of the church campus providing needed repairs and replacements and moving us into the future with clean energy production and savings. Included in the project are a new insulated roof on the RE building, replacements windows in the RE building, high efficiency boilers for both buildings, zoned high efficiency air conditioning for both buildings, refurbished storm windows on the church building and a commercial grade lowwater dishwater in the kitchen. Topping it off will be a bank of solar panels on the RE roof, which will provide all the energy we currently use. Each of these projects would be good alone, but taken together, they will help us move our Green Sanctuary designation to a whole new level and save resources and money for the foreseeable future. We will also use this work to shine our values out into the surrounding community, hopefully inspiring other congregations to move toward Solid Ground Rev Pam Rumancik Winter 2016/2017 green initiatives of their own. The church has also been working to create connections and places for fun and conversation. The Fall Festival gave folks a chance to buy yummy food items while playing games and raising funds for the budget. Our Small Group Ministry has established four different groups that are meeting monthly, including a newly formed Men s group. The One-to-One listening campaign continues to help individuals reach out and connect on a more intimate basis, and the board members took up the refrain by being trained to do these types of conversations themselves. This work of conversation and sharing is helping us restructure the foundation of our congregation... A Beloved Conversations group, in collaboration with four other UU churches, is meeting biweekly to do the deep work of understanding our cultural and racial histories. At the end, these folks will share their insights with the larger congregation. This might seem like just a lot of talking, but it offers the possibility of so much continued on next page The Touchstone 1
Solid Ground continued from previous page more. Our hope is this will lead to storytelling, to sharing, and to forming connections that will help us build Beloved Community. When we know someone s story, understand the challenges they ve faced and shared our own, a deep and strong web of connection is built the kind of connection that helps undertake great dreams, that reaches out to heal a hurting world, that can absorb the shock and hurt of so many of the challenges that are facing our society right now. This work of conversation and sharing is helping us restructure the foundation of our congregation in the same way the work of the Green Home Campaign is restructuring our physical plant. It is creating a strong and sustainable foundation for many years into the future, while making it warmer and more comfortable for those of us here now. Don t be left out in the cold! Find a way to join the conversation and deepen your own connections to our compassionate and loving church community. 3 "NOW!" That's the answer to, "When should I pay my promised amount to the Green Home Capital Campaign? or When should I pledge for the campaign?" We're making steady progress, and Green Home committee members* greatly appreciate when people approach us with their commitment. Declaring a pledge is step one, but work can be contracted only when the funds are in the bank. Therefore, if you pledged, now is the time to pay. If you haven't pledged, we urge you to bring in the form before the year ends. Contact a committee member* or respond when one of them contacts you. If you chose to pay part in 2017, the committee urges you to do so in the early months so that work can be scheduled for air conditioning as soon as weather permits, and the remaining projects can follow as soon as possible. Greetings, UCH friends. I am writing this just a few days before the election, and of course, you are reading this post-election. Right now, the election is front and center on my mind, and I feel sad and stressed about the negativity this election has stirred up. I m trying to hope for the best and have faith that we will elect someone who can lead our country out of this season of discontent and anger. These past few months have made me focus more intentionally on the positive. I balance reading the paper with a good book or an Green Home Progress Karen McDowell As of November 1, funds were available to replace and insulate the RE roof before winter, and do the RE windows, but it was unclear whether there was time to schedule the window replacements, or if that would need to wait until spring. The sooner they are replaced, the greater the energy savings, but this is a busy time of year for window companies, and everything is custom ordered. Window replacement necessitates installing air conditioning next spring. Boilers, which also reduce energy consumption, might be asked to limp through another winter. Solar panel installation is time-sensitive to next May. All projects are dependent on funds available and weather conditions. All pledges, unless otherwise arranged, should be honored by March, Contributing to the Green Home campaign should President s Message Liz Reyes hour reading one of the hundred or so magazines that can be found on various tables and shelves all around our house. One of my favorite authors, Ann Patchett, just released a book, and I m looking forward to reading it. Another one of my favorite authors, Larry Brown, died twelve years ago, and I still haven t allowed myself to read his last published book. Maybe now is the time to do it. I need a good distraction this weekend. Back to UCH business the Board of Trustees has joined the on-going One to One campaign. not reduce the annual pledge to the operating budget of the church. All contributions are tax deductible. Each leaf on the pledge progress tote board represents $3,000 pledged, and while the leaves outside have fallen, our pledge tree is reaching full foliage! Keep checking the progress and future notices in News & Notes. Hopefully by the next Touchstone issue, we will be able to report much more progress on pledges and projects! Our thanks to all for taking ownership, and to those who have already pledged and especially to those who have paid. *Karen McDowell, Dave Lloyd, Diane Barnes, Julia Beckman, Ron Solberg, Steve Trout, Benjamin Van Horn We attended a training session in October and committed to putting our new skills to use! I m looking forward to having some meaningful conversations. I m also participating in the Beloved Conversations training with several other UCH members, and I will have more to share in a future Touchstone. I wish everyone peace and good health. Thank you for reading and being a part of our UCH family. Liz Reyes President, Board of Trustees The Touchstone 3
These are all questions we have heard during the past several years. Such questions are not new or unique to our church. Below I will explain why being intentional about including everyone in our church services is important. There are so many documented reasons why allcommunity, or intergenerational worship, is important. Intergenerational worship gives the younger members an experience of seeing what adults do when they worship and offers an example of reverence and respect for worship which they can later emulate. Being able to worship in the sanctuary is often an important clue to our younger members as they figure out what our religion is about. It is one effective way to help younger members experience the liturgy of our congregation so that they know what UU liturgy is when they talk to their friends. All-Community worship provides an opportunity for young and old alike to enjoy, together, one of the fundamental elements of all religions storytelling. All-Community worship often provides one of the only avenues for interaction between older and younger members of our church community. We need to provide opportunities for younger members to become familiar with and understand our liturgy, values, and norms within worship so that Why Do We Have Intergenerational Worship? Pam Fodor Why is it important to have the children in the service? Why is important to be present for All-Community Worship Services? when they see other religious styles, they will recognize the difference. Families whose parents are busy (like most families in the UU demographic) are looking for ways to spend meaningful time with their children that will invite further sharing and conversation. All-Community Services are one of the most important aspects church shoppers are looking for. They are vital, creative, responsible and caring approaches to including children in the life of the church and helping to teach values and important lessons in memorable ways. Effective intergenerational worship is often one of the most common characteristics shared by our fastest-growing churches. One of the biggest reasons I have such a passion for these All-Community Services is the fact that it will help us retain our youth and young adults as members through the years. It is a commonly known fact in and around the UUA that our churches historically have a difficult time retaining our young people beyond high school. Most young adults simply do not return to their UU faith during or after college. My own family is a perfect example. My mom and dad were active members of this church; as a matter of fact, my mom was the Director of Religious Education as we were growing up. UU values and religious education and this church were very important It is a commonly known fact in and around the UUA that our churches historically have a difficult time retaining our young people beyond high school. to our family. Of the four of us siblings, only half of us remained UUs, raised our children in UU churches and remained active in our churches. This statistic is heart breaking. I don t want to think that half of our current young people, which is 35 of our 70 children, would choose not to continue to hold on to our UU faith. I believe that part of the reason that our children feel disconnected from our worship community is that we, as a denomination, offer religious education and our faith development for young people during the worship time, and the RE classes or gathering spaces are often in the basement of the church, or in our case, an entirely separate building. Both of these things create a feeling of separation for our young people. My very own daughter illustrated this point quite well one day (a very long time ago) we were getting out of the car on a Sunday morning. In the parking lot, she asked me, Mommy, are we going in to our church, and pointed to the RE Building or are we going into Grandma and Grandpa s church? and pointed continued on Page 5 The Touchstone 4
RE worship services continued from previous page to the church building. I spent the next 20 minutes sitting with her in the pews explaining to her that both buildings were part of her church and that our family belonged to the whole church. She finally said she understood (either because she really did or because she simply wanted me to stop talking), and we both carried out our duties of getting ready for church. But my heart ached that day I didn t want my child or any child or youth to feel separated from their faith community. It was that day that I became passionate about making intergenerational services a reality here at our church. We started out slowly at first having just a few every year and have worked our way up to having the children start every service with the adults. We are also currently having about one All-Community Service a month. I don t think that any of our children would say something along the lines of what Emma said so many years ago because they are worshiping with us so much more now. I am glad about that! It has been interesting to watch you and the children from the pulpit during the course of these services. I believe I have seen their faith and yours too grow or change because of these services. The most noticeable effect is the stillness that is invoked when our musicians begin to play the prelude. The children and some adults too are instantly silenced and centered by the experience of beautiful music. I often see adults peeking down the row to capture the look on a child s face during musical interludes or during stories. Some of the children have a difficult time reading the responsive readings or following along during the hymns, but even still are awed by the power of joined voices. My most favorite thing to see is children snuggling up under the arms of their parents and being still and comforted for an extended period of quiet time. We parents have so many demands on us that it is sometimes hard to give our children that time. For those children, this is truly sacred, spiritual time. All these reasons are enough to feed my passion for us to continue to worship together. I have seen the changes in our children and felt the change in our community over the years. I would like to share this quote with you from Jean Starr Williams: When we adults think of children, there is a simple truth which we ignore: childhood is not preparation for life, childhood is life. A child isn t getting ready to live, a child is living. The child is constantly confronted with the nagging question, What are you going to be? Courageous would be the youngster who, looking the adult squarely in the face, would say, I m not going to be anything; I already am. We adults would be shocked by such an insolent remark for we have forgotten, if indeed we ever knew, that a child is an active, participating, and contributing member of society from the time he is born. Childhood isn t a time when a child is molded into a human who will then live life; a child is a human who is living life. No child will miss the zest and joy of living unless these are denied him by adults who have convinced themselves that childhood is a period of preparation. We are not raising FUTURE UU s. We are raising UU s! The children are part of our church community now, and their faith development is ALL our responsibility. Our commitment to including the children in worship and All- Community Services will help all our members, young and old, to define what is sacred and spiritual in our lives and that is what being a part of a faith community is all about! 6 A dozen or so years ago, UCH was blessed with another immigrant when Cathy Blanford began attending closer to home. To get acquainted with some of our members, she signed on for Marian Honel- Wilson s New UU chalice circle. When that curriculum ended, Cathy continued to facilitate several chalice circles, which have morphed into our current small group ministries, Covenant Circles, now led by Jessica Friess. Cathy also taught our preschool for three years and served on the RE committee one year. Helping others grow in spirit and deal with life s hard emotional situations is Cathy s calling. During the AIDS crisis in the 80 s, Cathy began to direct a program to find homes for children with AIDS. Having worked as a hospice chaplain for over ten years, she became aware that children often have difficulty expressing their grief and confusion. In addition to directing the AIDS program, Cathy now runs Tommy s Kids, a children s grief support group Listen Children and You May Hear Karen McDowell through St. Thomas Hospice. Her books Something Happened and My Baby Big Sister (available on Amazon) address the questions and emotions felt by children in a family where a baby has died during pregnancy or shortly thereafter. This life experience led her to offer grief support groups and the Living in the Light of Dying sessions at UCH. Cathy and her husband Bill raised two daughters, Lauren and Tawnya, who as adults are still UU s in their hearts. Cathy was a long-time member of Unity Temple, where Bill was a very active member. She says, I wish you could have known him, for, although he died when he was just 52, his love for his family and his impact on the world live on. Cathy s two grandchildren, Reno and Ally, are a constant source of ongoing joy in her life. Perhaps Cathy s greatest skill, which she models for all of us all the time, is the capacity to listen conscientiously. In addition, it is Cathy s connection to the larger denomination that fills her passion. As president of the Chicago Area UU Council (CAUUC, pronounced caulk), Cathy wants to bring that sense of belonging to everyone through RE curriculum, adult program resources, and marketing. She hopes to bring us more awareness of what CAUUC is and what it offers. CAUUC representatives from the greater Chicago area, ranging from Elgin to northwest Indiana, receive newsletters, attend meetings, and bring information and resources back to their congregations. Dues help pay for marketing our denomination; three dollars of everyone s annual pledge supports CAUUC. Perhaps Cathy s greatest skill, which she models for all of us all the time, is the capacity to listen conscientiously. That practice is at the foundation of the Covenant Circles. 7 SAC: Where We Are Going Kim Ryan It s taken me longer than usual this month to write something for the Social Action Committee. Since the election, I ve been in a dark place, wondering how this country, which was built on democratic principles, could have elected someone who attacked women, people of color, the LGBT community, disabled people, and people of other faiths. In fact, President Washington, our first leader, pushed to help those that had little (many of them veterans of the Revolutionary War), and accepted men of Muslim faith who helped fight to make America free from British control. Over two centuries later, then, how could we elect a person who has aimed to create divisions among us and who chose a VP that hates anyone who isn t heterosexual? How could we let this happen? Oh, wait, we may not have, but that s another fight. At the same time, I also know that our congregation is a family of love, strength, and generosity. We will stand for those that have less, and we will continue to support the needy. Sometimes we do it by action; sometimes we do it by giving. This year, we hope to have I also know that our congregation is a family of love, strength, and generosity. a reading of the play from incarcerated men from Stateville. Tracey Olson has volunteered to contact the players and get this done. It was also very kind of her to worry about me since I worked at Stateville and could be hurt/ offended by the program. I would like to publicly thank her for her kindness. However, I knew where I had worked; I knew some of the people I had worked with, and I have no problem with the program and the truth it shows. I have always thought, in many situations in life, There but for the grace of? go I. I could have been there, too, but I was white and got away with more. I would like to thank all the people that contributed to different charities this year. WOW! I think this is the first year that we had to debate which charities would be up for our Special Collection. Some charities were not chosen because they had been supported in the past on more than three occasions. That doesn t mean they will not be supported again, just that we had other areas this year that were new. We also came up with an agenda of who we support; we want to make sure we support a variety of causes. These areas include Human, Animal, Environment, and we want to try to hit these categories as best we can in our finite collections. We have our monthly collections set up for the year (posted here) and what we ve collected in the first three months. I feel we do a great job of supporting those who truly need supporting, and we ll continue this effort. The list includes those groups to come and the three that have been completed, along with the amounts we have collected. 2016/17 SAC Collections December: January: February: March: April: May: June: Summer: Illinois Safe Schools Planned Parenthood Hinsdale Humane Society St. Jude s Hospital (RE request) UUANI UU Prison Ministry CBTA PADS Social Action Committee Fall 2016 Collections September Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation $585 October Austin Scholarship $ November Interfaith Community Partner $533 The Touchstone 7
Twenty Lessons from the 20th Century Timothy Snyder My friend, Rev Jake Morrill, says We continue to transition into a presidency that will be, as people say gently, "not normal." What can we do to safeguard ourselves from being overwhelmed or taken by surprise? Here is a list of ideas from Yale historian and Holocaust expert Timothy Snyder who says: "Americans are no wiser than the Europeans who saw democracy yield to fascism, Nazism, or communism. Our one advantage is that we might learn from their experience. Now is a good time to do so." Snyder's a member of the Council on Foreign Relations (which includes former Secretaries of State), and consults on political situations around the globe. The best approach is not to be taken unawares. We can stop a downward slide into fascism by paying attention. 1. Do not obey in advance. Much of the power of authoritarianism is freely given. In times like these, individuals think ahead about what a more repressive government will want, and then start to do it without being asked. You've already done this, haven't you? Stop. Anticipatory obedience teaches authorities what is possible and accelerates unfreedom. 2. Defend an institution. Follow the courts or the media, or a court or a newspaper. Do not speak of "our institutions" unless you are making them yours by acting on their behalf. Institutions don't protect themselves. They go down like dominoes unless each is defended from the beginning. 3. Recall professional ethics. When the leaders of state set a negative example, professional commitments to just practice become much more important. It is hard to break a rule-of-law state without lawyers, and it is hard to have show trials without judges. 4. When listening to politicians, distinguish certain words. Look out for the expansive use of "terrorism" and "extremism." Be alive to the fatal notions of "exception" and "emergency." Be angry about the treacherous use of patriotic vocabulary. 5. Be calm when the unthinkable arrives. When the terrorist attack comes, remember that all authoritarians at all times either await or plan such events in order to consolidate power. Think of the Reichstag fire. The sudden disaster that requires the end of the balance of power, the end of opposition parties, and so on, is the oldest trick in the Hitlerian book. Don't fall for it. 6. Be kind to our language. Avoid pronouncing the phrases everyone else does. Think up your own way of speaking, even if only to convey that thing you think everyone is saying. (Don't use the internet before bed. Charge your gadgets away from your bedroom, and read.) What to read? Perhaps "The Power of the Powerless" by Václav Havel, 1984 by George Orwell, The Captive Mind by Czesław Milosz, The Rebel by Albert Camus, The Origins of Totalitarianism by Hannah Arendt, or Nothing is True and Everything is Possible by Peter Pomerantsev. 7. Stand out. Someone has to. It is easy, in words and deeds, to follow along. It can feel strange to do or say something different. But without that unease, there is no freedom. And the moment you set an example, the spell of the status quo is broken, and others will follow. 8. Believe in truth. To abandon facts is to abandon freedom. If nothing is true, then no one can criticize power, because there is no basis upon which to do so. If nothing is true, then all is spectacle. The biggest wallet pays for the most blinding lights. 9. Investigate. Figure things out for yourself. Spend more time with long articles. Subsidize investigative journalism by subscribing to print media. Realize that some of what is on your screen is there to harm you. Bookmark PropOrNot or other sites that investigate foreign propaganda pushes. 10. Practice corporeal politics. Power wants your body softening in your chair and your emotions dissipating on the screen. Get outside. Put your body in unfamiliar places with unfamiliar people. Make new friends and march with them. 11. Make eye contact and small talk. This is not just polite. It is a way to stay in touch with your surroundings, break down unnecessary social barriers, and come to understand whom you should and should not trust. If we enter a culture of denunciation, you will want to know the psychological landscape of your daily life. 12. Take responsibility for the face of the world. Notice the swastikas and the other signs of hate. Do not look away and do not get used to them. Remove them yourself and set an example for others to do so. 13. Hinder the one-party state. The parties that took over states were once something else. They exploited a historical moment to make political life impossible for their rivals. Vote in local and state elections while you can. continued on next page The Touchstone 8
Twenty Lessons continued from previous page 14. Give regularly to good causes, if you can. Pick a charity and set up autopay. Then you will know that you have made a free choice that is supporting civil society helping others doing something good. 15. Establish a private life. Nastier rulers will use what they know about you to push you around. Scrub your computer of malware. Remember that is skywriting. Consider using alternative forms of the internet, or simply using it less. Have personal exchanges in person. For the same reason, resolve any legal trouble. Authoritarianism works as a blackmail state, looking for the hook on which to hang you. Try not to have too many hooks. 16. Learn from others in other countries. Keep up your friendships abroad, or make new friends abroad. The present difficulties here are an element of a general trend. And no country is going to find a solution by itself. Make sure you and your family have passports. 17. Watch out for the paramilitaries. When the men with guns who have always claimed to be against the system start wearing uniforms and marching around with torches and pictures of a Leader, the end is nigh. When the pro-leader paramilitary and the official police and military intermingle, the game is over. 18. Be reflective if you must be armed. If you carry a weapon in public service, God bless you and keep you. But know that evils of the past involved policemen and soldiers finding themselves, one day, doing irregular things. Be ready to say no. (If you do not know what this means, contact the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and ask about training in professional ethics.) 19. Be as courageous as you can. If none of us is prepared to die for freedom, then all of us will die in unfreedom. 20. Be a patriot. The incoming president is not. Set a good example of what America means for the generations to come. They will need it.
