We need to answer this question: What efforts by our church would bear the most fruit and bring the best revitalization to our congregation, given our current gifts and resources? Board and Elders affirmed this task and a new team was formed to lead PCC in this effort. The team is Evelyn Nifong, Jill Robertson, Ann Fletcher and Jackie Romanello, all former members of the Transition Team. The process for determining a short-term mission focus is dependent on the prayerful participation of PCC members. All of you are invited to participate in a 3-hour discernment process on Sunday, October 9, from 3:30 7:00 p.m. A light meal will be provided. The team chose this time because we need 3 hours to accomplish the task, and jumping into it right after Sunday worship and lunch didn t seem like the best option. We hope you will have some lunch that day, go home and rest a bit and then come back ready to make some significant decisions. Church growth experts indicate that congregations should build on their strengths before trying to compensate for their weaknesses. This ministry focus process is designed to do just that. Be thinking about the gifts, strengths and assets of our church and be ready to share these. If you will pray and participate, we will come to the conclusion of this gathering with a ministry priority designed to strengthen PCC in the short-term so that our new pastor will come on board a ship that is already sailing. Ken Massey

Notes from Tim It is hard to believe that the summer is almost past and we are almost ready to fix our eyes upon the beauty of a new season Autumn. I have always enjoyed the coming of fall, and just the other evening I was listening to a beautiful anthem setting of one of my most favorite hymns of the church For the Beauty of the Earth that especially reminds me of this new approaching season. I was suddenly emotionally moved by the words and music to this great hymn in a fresh new way. Even though many of us have repeatedly sung some of our favorite hymns since childhood, as we grow in the faith, these special hymns continually speak to us through the interpretation and guidance of the Holy Spirit in countless new ways as we recall memories of our past, and as we continue on our journey in the Christian faith, accepting new challenges with the help of God s faithfulness, abiding love, and hope for the future! All of these attributes of God are affirmed in the words of this wonderful hymn. Our heavenly Father is the Creator and Giver of all that is beautiful in the universe. The first chapter of Genesis tells us that God approved of all His handiwork, repeating several times And God saw that it was good. Undoubtedly He is pleased when we recognize the beauty of our world and thank Him for it. Yes, a Christian does have an obligation with regard to beauty. Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest...just...lovely...of good report...think on these things. (Philippians 4:8) There are many other aspects of our world which we take for granted: health, homes, friends, our country, even life itself. The hymn For the Beauty of the Earth lists some of God s blessing for which we may seem to be ungrateful. Do we sometimes feel that these things are secular aspects of life, and that we should limit our praying and singing only to spiritual things? Yet all of these so-called ordinary things are gifts of God. We should thank Him for them! We live in a world of beauty also demonstrated through sacred art, magnificent architecture and buildings, sculpture, music, etc. These are creations by artists simply imitating God s own magnificent creative acts, using the talents God has given to each designer, worker and musician, etc. For this reason, the Christian also sees the hand of God in all good art. Not only did God the Creator put beautiful sounds and sights in the world He also gave us ears and eyes to take them in, and minds to interpret what we hear and see. It is proper to thank God for a clear mind and the joy we find in developing it through study or in research. All this represents His great gift to us and our gratitude is expressed in a stanza of this hymn: For the joy of ear and eye, for the heart and mind s delight, For the mystic harmony linking sense to sound and sight: Lord of all, to Thee we raise this our hymn of grateful praise! Church Family Bud Barker, Doris Spaugh Loved Ones in the Military Sgt. Samantha Goliat, OH; PRAN Joshua Hughes, Norfolk, VA; Chase Lee, Guam; USS Key West; Captain Hope Poster, NG Commander, Winston-Salem, NC; Captain John G. Van Hoy, IV, Iraq. Others Joy Beck (Jo Stanley s mother); Bob Chadbourne (Jill Robertson s cousin); Jane Hoover (recuperating from surgery) Dewey Robertson (Sarah Ingram s brother); Lacy Mabe (uncle of Scott, Jill, Emma Robertson); Sue Miles (friend of Jo Stanley); Dwayne Sloan; Darlene Stewart (sister of Ann Fletcher), Wade Tuttle (Jill Robertson s uncle) Judy West (cousin of Ann Fletcher) Winston-Salem Police Officers and their families In the remaining stanzas, author Folliott S. Pierpoint gives thanks for the joy of human love, brother, sister, parent, child, friends on earth and friends above, and for the fellowship of God s church encircling the world. The final verse of the hymn gives thanks for God Himself who has given us all the joys and beauty of life but more than all this, His only begotten Son. For Thyself, best Gift Divine! To the world so freely given; For that great, great love of Thine, Peace on earth and joy in heaven; Lord of all, to Thee we raise this our hymn of grateful praise! For the Beauty of the Earth was originally written as a hymn for the Lord s Supper with the refrain: Christ, our God, to Thee we raise, this our sacrifice of praise referring to Christ s sacrifice on the cross for our sins referenced in Hebrews 13:15 By him (Jesus Christ) therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to His name. Most hymnals in more recent years have changed the refrain to the present version: Lord of all, to Thee we raise, this our hymn of grateful praise so it can be used as a more general hymn and contain more of a broader focus of gratitude for all creation and a Lord of all. As I have shared some thoughts on this great hymn, it is my desire that you will continue to find added meaning to the many other great hymns of the church we sing each Sunday in worship! Grace and peace to you! Tim Page 6 Page 3

Recently, she has made some phenomenal discoveries that have opened up more understanding about the end of his life. Donna recognizes how many timely details have fallen into place during these discoveries, and knows that God put the pieces together. Hearing the unfolding of this drama, from the days of WWII to the present, will both amaze and inspire you. The Christian Women s Fellowship will be hosting the meal; and the program is being sponsored by the Christian Men s Fellowship. We would like for you to invite a friend or neighbor to join you for this special evening of great food, fellowship, and a truly inspiring program. Please make your reservation (including the total number of guests you will be bringing) by signing-up on the sheets in the Narthex or by calling the church office and leaving a message.
