PRELUDE 8:30 As Rain from the Clouds J. Spilman Handchimes arr. K.L. Buckwalter WELCOME OPENING WORDS One: One: One: Watch and listen for the wonders of our God. Our God is among us. Watch and listen for the goodness of our God. Our God moves among us. Watch and listen, for God is here. Our God dwells among us. Worship Ways November 18, 2018 *OPENING HYMN Gather Us In Marty Haugen
Worship Series Grateful for the Journey! It s a joy to be at Peace! How do you share in that joy? Are you grateful for: a. the journey a willingness to listen to what God wants us to do in the world b. the zeal/spirit to do God s work in the world c. the avenues through which to do God s work in the world: CDF Freedom School and so very many more! d. the community that comes together with love and compassion to do God s work in the world (Today) *PRAYER OF INVOCATION adapted from Margaret Gay MacKinnon Godfrey Holy Spirit of God, who gathers the church into one body, gather us once again in your presence and strengthen the bonds of affection that hold your people together. Bless us with grace to cooperate with one another in love and service that we may be the signs of your uniting love to our fractured world. Amen RESPONSE Make Us One Carol Cymbala Adult Learning Time Nov. 18, 9:15-10:30a.m.: Thanksgiving brunch, Fireside room Stewardship Mission Moments Imagine what s possible... if we trusted the truth that one cannot give away more than is received in the form of blessing and joy if participation in God s mission of healing and compassion in the world were the top priority in our lives if our actions and decisions about money reflected our trust in God s abundance Imagine what s possible as we strive every day to do God s work in the world! ~Marilyn Stavenger MISSION MOMENT 8:30 Gabe Grundy 11:00 Patty Pelikan CHILDREN S TIME Following the story, young children are encouraged to remain in worship or they may go to the nursery (birth-3). Attendance pads will be passed out at this time; please sign in so that we may celebrate that you were here. I love what we do at Peace! At the heart of all the ways we do God s work in the world is the community. Because of the loving community and people who care and the sense of safety in being who I am, I find that I am challenging myself in new and, for me, very difficult ways. Give me any personality test and I am as far as possible on the introverted end of the spectrum. Yet this past year, I have accepted the role of president of the Governing Body. I have been canvassing for Prop B and Amendment 1. I have talked to the local chamber of commerce about CDF Freedom School. I even enjoyed a two-day national UCC conference with total strangers! Major steps for me. All possible only because of what I receive from each of you here at Peace. ~Debbie Gregg WORD IN SONG 8:30 Holy God, We Praise Your Name Ron Mallory Handchimes 11:00 Your Love Will Be My Song Pepper Choplin Chancel Choir A READING FROM THE HEBREW TRADITION Micah 4:1-5 In days to come the mountain of the Lord s house shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be raised up above the hills. Peoples shall stream to it, and many nations shall come and say: Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; that God may teach us God s ways and that we may walk in God s paths. For out of Zion shall go forth instruction, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.
God shall bring justice to many peoples, and shall arbitrate between strong nations far away; they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning-hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more; and they shall all sit under their own vines and under their own fig trees, and no one shall make them afraid; for the mouth of the Lord of hosts has spoken. For all the peoples walk, each in the name of its god, and we will walk in the name of the Lord our God forever and ever. A READING FROM THE CHRISTIAN TRADITION John 17:20-21 I ask not only on behalf of these, but also on behalf of those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one. A READING FROM THIS TIME AND PLACE The Table With No Edges We will sit down where feet tire from the journey. We will sit down where grief bends the back. We will sit down under roofs wrecked by artillery. We will sit down where cries sound from cracked walls. We will sit down where heat beats like hammers. We will sit down where flesh shivers in cold. We will sit down where bread bakes on thin charcoal. We will sit down where there is no grain in baked fields. We will sit down with those who dwell in ashes. We will sit down in shadow and in light. We will sit down, making friends out of strangers. We will sit down, our cup filled with new wine. We will sit down and let love flow like language. We will sit down where speech needs no words. We will sit together at the table with no edges. We will sit to share one loaf, in Christ s name, in one world. Andrew King One: For the marvelous blend of fact, myth, poetry, and story that is in scripture, we give thanks. May the Spirit open us to the wisdom we most need to hear. To families of young children at Peace UCC When God made children, they were made with a little giggle, a little squirm, and a whole lot of love. When you worship with us your children are invited to sit at the front of the sanctuary. That way they can see what is going on in church and interact better with what Peace UCC has to offer. When your children are here, our building is filled with a joyful noise. This is something for which we rejoice and praise God. If your children start to get restless please don t leave. Stay and continue worship because when you do you show them that worship is something important and that their presence is important to us. At times we know this can be a struggle, but thank you for making the effort. 1. There are activity bags for the young children. They are available near the sanctuary doors. 2. There is a rocking chair at the back of the sanctuary that you can use. We also have a nursery just outside of the sanctuary. Ask someone and they will give you directions. 3. We have changing tables in the nursery and downstairs in the bathroom by the fellowship hall. We understand the difficulty of worshipping with a little one. We hope that you feel we are a Child-Loving church. Please know that when your child gets fussy that we are honored to have you with us today. Thank you for joining us in worship today and I hope that you will join us again. Peace to you, Pastor Wendy Bulletin & News & Notes Deadline The deadline to submit items for the Nov. 15 bulletin and the Nov. 23 News & Notes is Nov. 21 at 10:00a.m. SERMON Rev. Wendy Bruner

And the people may respond: Hear our prayer. PRAYER This is a time for quiet reflection. LORD S PRAYER Creator, hallowed be your name. Your kin-dom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For yours is the kin-dom, and the power, and the glory for ever and ever. Amen. CELEBRATION OF COMMUNION 8:30AM INVITATION AND COMMUNION PRAYER based on our Theological Assumptions Minister: Come, Holy Spirit, and move among these elements assembled at this Table. Through this sacrament, transform our hurt into healing, our fear into faith, and death into life. Minister: As the grain, sown in hills and valleys, is harvested, and now becomes one in the loaf,
Liturgist: Minister: Minister: Liturgist: All: so we, scattered, diverse, separated and isolated from one another, hear your invitation to become one body around this Table, the center of our life together. As this juice, grown in vineyards under the sun, fills the cup, may we be filled and refreshed by this meal, and strengthened to respond to your call to reach out in compassion to all living things. In sharing this meal we remember. We remember meals Jesus shared with friends and enemies, outcasts and marginalized, fearful and earnest. He took the bread and, giving thanks, blessed it and broke it and shared it. As we share the bread today, we eat it as those who seek to follow Jesus. After the meal, Jesus took the cup. Giving thanks, he shared it, symbolizing a new relationship with God, a relationship of partnership founded on grace. As we share the cup, we seek to experience that grace in which Jesus lived fully. Come, Holy Spirit, come. Bless this bread and bless this fruit of the vine. Bless all of us in our eating and drinking that our eyes might be opened, that we might recognize the risen Christ in our midst, indeed, in one another. Come, Holy Spirit, come. The Congregation is invited to come forward by the center aisle, partake of the gluten-free bread and juice, and light a candle in prayer. Catch the eye of a table host if you would prefer to be served at your seat. 8:30 RESPONSE For the Sake of the World Christopher Grundy Special Congregational Meeting For Approval to Fund Sewer Repairs Facilities has been exploring the sewer lines coming out of the education wing for over a year. There had been a sink hole and break; in making those repairs, it led us to larger sewer issues for the education wing. We now have a plan for how to make the necessary additional repairs to the lines and are asking for Congregational approval to spend up to $40,000 of Peace Capital Funds. Meeting: Sunday, Nov. 25, 9:45a.m. 5th-7th Grade Youth Sunday, Nov. 25th - We will meet after the 11:00 service - 2:30 to help with the Hanging of the Greens and then finish our magnet project. Sunday, Dec.2nd - We will meet after the 11:00 service - 2:30 to do some Amazing Advent Activities, assemble care packages for the homebound, and make plans for our January Lock-in. Santas on the Loose Once again this year we will be volunteering to help with the race by giving directions to and cheering on runners. The race is on December 1 in Webster Groves. Volunteers will need to be at the race at 7a.m. There is a sign-up sheet in the narthex. We need 25 people to volunteer. Calling all children and youth: Peace UCC needs your help in understanding the Advent themes of Hope, Peace, Joy, and love. You can do this by drawing a picture of one of these themes on a 8 1/2 x11 piece of paper. These images will be used as our Sunday bulletin covers during Advent. This image must be scannable so please no glue or glitter. All art work will also be displayed in the Fireside Room during Advent. Please have all images submitted to the church office by November 25. Scan and Give Supporting the work of this church has never been easier. Just scan the QR code with your smartphone and you can make a donation to Peace UCC.
Adult Learning Time during Advent Advent is just around the corner. We come again to this time of the year with great anticipation for the birth of a child who will change the world. This Advent during Adult Learning Time on Sunday (9:45-10:45a.m.), we will study The First Christmas by Marcus Borg and John Dominic Crossan. This study is certain to stimulate a lively discussion. We hope you will join us in the Fireside room on December 2, 9, 16 and 23 to learn more about the Christmas stories written so long ago and the message the writers were trying to convey. CHARIS Concert On Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 at 8p.m. the St. Louis Women s Chorus joins the Missouri History Museum and The Muny in celebrating 100 years of musical theater in the first concert of our 26th season, Meet Me at the Muny. In addition to featuring numbers from the many Broadway shows that have made their way to the Muny stage the concert will celebrate musical theater s recognized history as a venue of safety and affirmation for members of the LGBTQ community. We promise to keep your toes tapping and your jazz hands flapping! You may purchase advanced tickets online at from any chorus member, or by calling :30 PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING unknown Gracious God, you have once again shown us your love by bringing us to this meal. We will open our How Shall We Do God s Work In The World time with an opportunity to give. The ushers will pass an offering plate to you as you remain in your seats. We invite you to sing along to Siyahamba NCH#526. PRAYER OF DEDICATION unknown Generous God, we share what we have because we wish to serve you with the best we have to offer. Bless our tithes and offerings that they may become a bountiful feast for all who need to be filled with good things. Open our eyes to see the strangers you call us to welcome. Empower us to receive them as you do, with radically inclusive hospitality. May we recognize and delight in the gifts they share with us. Amen.
