3 Welcome All Aboard! The Justice Train is in the station and boarding. Family, friends, allies, supporters, justice seekers, and sojourners come onboard and join MORE 2 as we journey to justice for all in our metro area. Tonight we celebrate our accomplishments over our first 10 years and commit to growing a more just and equitable life for all Greater Kansas Citians during the coming years. Rev. Dr. Rodney Williams MORE 2 Co-Chair Senior Minister Swope Parkway United We believe in the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. Too many in our metro are trapped by the walls of inadequate access to quality education, limited chances for living wage jobs, and insufficient public transit. Working hand in hand, shoulder to shoulder and heart to heart we will tare down these walls of injustice. Sandi Holderman MORE 2 Co-Chair Community Christian Church The words of Amos spoken in the eight century B.C.E. are painfully pertinent in our twenty-first-century fight, as we address issues of economic injustice. As we come together as a community dedicated to forging real change, together we can shift the moral direction of this nation, and with the power of we the words of Amos will become a reality BUT LET JUDGEMENT RUN DOWN AS WATERS, AND RIGHTEOUSNESS AS A MIGHTY STREAM. THIS DRAFT HAS GONE TO REV. WILLIAMS TO UPDATE/ CHANGE/REWRITE. 3

4 Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II T he Reverend Dr. William J. Barber, II was born in Indianapolis two days after the 1963 March on Washington. His parents moved him from Indiana s integrated kindergarten to the segregated kindergarten in his father s black belt home in Washington County, a conscious act to desegregate North Carolina s dual school system. His father was one of the first black teachers of physics and his mother was the first black office manager in a Washington County high school. He earned his bachelor s degree in political science and public administration at North Carolina Central University; his master s from Duke University; and his doctorate from Drew University in public policy and pastoral care. Rev. Barber has served as the pastor of Greenleaf Christian Church Disciples of Christ, in Goldsboro North Carolina since Elected head of the state s NAACP in 2005, he led a voter registration effort that added more than 442,000 new voters to the rolls. As the public face of the Moral Monday movement, Dr. Barber s brilliant oratorical skills, has ignited a broad coalition that will have a lasting impact. In 2006 he gathered leaders of 16 progressive North Carolina organizations to hammer out a 14 Point People s Agenda and in February 2007 he convened the first Historic Thousands on Jones Street (HKONJ) Peoples Assembly to approve the Agenda and post it in front of the North Carolina General Assembly on Jones Street. The original sweet 16 has now grown to over 200 partners, including virtually every African American denomination, a majority of the predominantly white mainstream protestant denominations and thousands of Roman Catholics, Jews, Muslims, and Ethicists. The Forward Together Moral Movement has experienced almost eight years of fighting with (and sometimes against) Democratic Party leaders in the General Assembly to win Same Day Registration, the Racial Justice Act, and building cross-racial unity in the marriage equality fight. Over the past years Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II has received numerous awards and recognitions including being named by the Center for American Progress one of 14 Faith Leaders to Watch in 2014; Rev. Barber was listed as number one. He was presented The Martin Luther King Award by the National Education Association and given the President s Award from the Greensboro Branch of the NAACP. Rev. Barber was awarded and named among the top 100 grassroots leaders in the nation from 2013 from the NBC Grio Blog. 4

23 Gamaliel T he Gamaliel Foundation is a network of affiliates in the United States and South Africa, representing over a million, multi-faith, multi-racial people who work on social justice issues. The core mission of Gamaliel is the creation, maintenance and expansion of independent local organizations, including MORE 2. To this end, Gamaliel: Works with leaders in communities to create new and powerful faith-based organizations; Provides an array of leadership training programs and consultations; Provides research and analysis on local national and state issues. Gamaliel s organizing work draws on struggles for justice by people of faith stretching back thousands of years and spanning many nations, faiths, and cultures. Gamaliel s work draws on Biblical scripture, Christ s life and teaching, the Torah, the Qur an, Catholic social teaching, the founding principles of American democracy, the U.S. civil rights movement, and many other sources. Above all, this work begins and ends in an expression of the personal faith and values of its members. Gamaliel provides leadership training, helps build community organizations, and leads local and national social justice campaigns. Gamaliel is the only national community organizing network that marries broad-based grassroots organizing campaigns with state-of-the-art regional opportunity research and policy development. Gamaliel is committed to the belief that leadership training not only prepares participants to be effective in social justice campaigns, but also strengthens the leadership of member congregations. National Leadership Training will be held in St. Louis August For additional information on Gamaliel training, contact Lora McDonald at Loramore2@yhahoo.com. 23
