Every year, our situations in life change Kids get older, we get older The magic of Christmas changes from year-to-year Sometimes songs get to you, sometimes a present you get, sometimes a present you give, sometimes it s just family time The meaning of Christmas and to be clear here, I mean the meaning that we ascribe to it from a consumer perspective changes each year So I m not sure there s such a thing as a traditional Christmas, and that s ok It was an untraditional Christmas Mary and Joseph still kids, still virgins, engaged and about to become parents set out andwell, you know most of the story Take some time to think about what makes this Christmas different for you (first one without someone? No money for presents? Kids coming home? Going somewhere different?) Now here s the kicker, regardless of what s changed in the last 12 months, the birth of the Savior is still the same, and he still has his grace to give you! There s a chance that you ll appreciate it in a new way this year, because this, like all, is an untraditional Christmas ~Pastor Michael Hanson

5 C o i n s f o r C h r i s t & M o r e Concordia Seminary by Carolyn Fiedler Here am I Send me! is the theme for the year at Concordia Seminary, St Louis Here am I Send me! is also the response of the prophet Isaiah to God s mission call in Isaiah 6:8 Perhaps you re thinking more in terms of a book I once read by Jill Briscoe entitled Here Am I - Send Aaron! That may be a good idea for most of you reading this article But please help us find Aaron We need to recruit more men for the pastoral ministry Our Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod has around 6100 congregations As of September, 2018 there were 511 vacancies That s a lot of churches without a shepherd to lead them So what can we do about it? Pray Recruit Recruit Recruit Think about the qualities needed to be a good pastor Who do you know exhibiting these qualities? Think young like middle school age The seed germinating early has a better chance to grow Encourage! Pray about it and look for that Aaron You can help instill that mission vision Our Concordia Seminary, St Louis is in its 180 th academic year Founded in 1839, the seminary has since provided more than 12,500 professional workers for the church Pilgrim has truly been blessed with faithful, dedicated pastors and vicar Both Pastor Malme and Pastor Hanson are alumni of Concordia Seminary, St Louis Of the 216 congregations in North Wisconsin District, only 2 congregations received vicars from St Louis to serve in Pilgrim is one of them We are pleased to have Vicar Colin Moon here The summer 2018 issue of the Concordia Seminary magazine shared some stories of men & women who heard God s call to take His good news into the world and responded by preparing themselves at the seminary for His mission They now have been sent Rev Anthony DiLiberto ( 18) stated I m going to a place everyone else is leaving His call is to the mission field in Puerto Rico, a US ter ritor y r avaged by Hurricane Maria in September, 2017 He stated We re nervous about moving to an island that was recently devastated by a hurricane, but we re also excited to see how God uses the situation to bring people into His Kingdom A 2017 grad, Rev Rob Bailey, noted that he has been a pastor for about a year, but what a year it was His call was to Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Houston, Texas mainly to lead a church-planting effort However two mass tragedies struck the community in which he serves - Hurricane Harvey in the fall of 2017 and the shooting at Santa Fe High School in May 2018 He jumped into action to minister during both crises Rev Bailey noted My job was to be a presence in their time of tragedy, reminding them that Jesus doesn t abandon or forsake us I knew what to do theologically because of my education at the Seminary, Bailey said As our professors always reminded us, we don t have all the answers and that s OK! For God is God and we are not God calls God sends We just need to respond Recruit God-fearing young men to help fill those pastoral vacancies Find that Aaron During the month of December drop your coins in the offering plate, use a Coins for Christ envelope or give electronically to support Concordia Seminary Through gifts and prayers, we too can respond, Here am I Send me! 10 T h e P r i n c i p a l s E p i s t l e 10 Pilgrim s Progress Faith: Sure and Certain! Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God Matthew 5:8 Christmas is upon us When we think of Christmas we think of the pure hearts we have as a result of our Savior Jesus The heart is the center of our spiritual life We change our life when we change our heart Max Lucado tells the story of a refinery that takes oil and purifies it so it can be useful The function of the machinery is defined by its name: it refines The refinery does for petroleum and other products what our heart should do for us It takes out the bad and utilizes the good Jesus is that refinery for our hearts One need look no farther in understanding right and wrong than to observe children When they have done something wrong they know it is wrong They do not take time to rationalize their error to make their behavior right Jesus gave us the blue print this Christmas season in Matthew when He gave us the Beatitudes When we read the passage above we know that to Jesus listeners, the heart is the seat of the character The direction is clear First purify the heart and then we will see God David was on target with his psalm that stated, Create in me a pure heart O God How can we change our heart? First we must admit our need of Jesus Second we must admit our sorrow and confess our sin Third we must admit our desire to be changed by Him Finally we must admit our hunger to be filled with His heart During this Christmas season we need to let God love us and search our hearts We need to reflect on what has come out of our mouths and confess our sins We need to pray according to God s Word We need to pray Thy will be done Recognizing that the smallest obedient act is better than the greatest intentions, we need to7 take action to have a pure heart When we pray through the eyes of faith in our Christmas Lord and positively respond to God s will for us, we can fully praise God for who he is We can praise God with David to say, Create in me a pure heart and put a new and right Spirit within me Students of the Month November Congratulations to our Students of the Month for September We give thanks for Nadia Wingerter, Karmyn Brooks, and Eli DeMelle They were chosen by their teachers, Mrs Kelly Schumm and Mrs Erin Schaefer, because of their leadership, positive attitudes, and exemplary behavior! Way to go! Congratulations Above and Beyond Awards Congratulations to Marlene Hanson for her leadership with our Moms in Prayer group, Wendy Urfer for her leadership in organizing the Welcome Center personnel, Erin Schaefer, Lisa Medenwald, Tovah Wingerter, and Ann Cartier for the work with the Walk-a-thon which raised $18, 884 All were selected as our November Above and Beyond recipients We are so blessed to have people who care so much about their jobs, the people they serve, and our positive church and school climate These people are our Above and Beyond Award Winners and without them we would not be the quality church and school that we are NLSA Mission and Purpose Pilgrim Lutheran School has adopted a new Mission-Purpose statement Educating children with the foundation and love of Jesus Christ is our purpose It works so well with our Pilgrim Lutheran Church Mission-Purpose statement of Save the Lost-Strengthen the Saved This has been approved by our faculty, Board of Christian Education, and Church Council Thanks to all for your hard work and effort on our accreditation process DOJ Grant Pilgrim was selected to receive both Round 1 and 2 grants from the Department of Justice (DOJ) Round 1 grant was for $21000 Round 2 grant was for $9300 We just finished the doors around the building with FOBs, rekeying, and replacing We were reimbursed $17111 for that work We will now begin the second phase of our security by installing additional cameras and a new system We thank the Lord for His generosity to Pilgrim through this DOJ grant What a blessing! We look forward to another really fantastic Christmas season! Thank you for your wonderful support of Pilgrim Lutheran School with your finances, positive words of encouragement, and especially your prayers! Thanks for the wonderfully positive word of mouth that you share with all you know! It is really exciting to see what the Lord is doing at our school and with our children! We are so very thankful for what the Lord continues to do for us! We pray the Lord will continue to bless us all year through!
