2 2 Old trees and new ones Matthew 7: 17 Every good tree bears good fruit. (NIV) In the recent tornado that tore through Arlington Woods and Craig Henry and Dunrobin and other neighbourhoods in Ottawa and Gatineau, many trees were felled. Some of those trees were 150 years old. These trees had stood for as long as Canada has been Canada! That got me thinking If you were born when your mother was 30 years old, and your mother was born when her mother (your grandmother) was 30 years old, and your grandmother was born when her mother (your great grandmother) was 30 years old, and your great grandmother was born when her mother (your great great grandmother) was 30 years old, then a tree that crashed down in last week s storm that was 150 years old was a tree planted by someone who lived at the same time as your great great grandmother. Now if you are a few years more or a few years less than 30 years old, and you plant a tree that lives for 150 years, the tree that you plant will be around for your great great grandchildren to see when they are 30 years old or when those who are the great great grandchildren of your neighbours are 30 years old. Let us think about planting seeds, and dream about who will see the trees that grow from those seeds. Let us also think about planting seeds of faith, hope, and love, and ponder and pray about those who will see and reap the fruit of those seeds in the generations to come. Are we planting, and pruning, lives that point to trust in Jesus as the Saviour and Lord of our lives? Are we fruit bearing trees that drop the fruits of love, and joy, and peace, and patience, and kindness, and goodness, and gentleness, and faithfulness, and self control into the lives of those around us? What sort of growth and multiplication might take place if intentionally we sowed more of these seeds? Luke 8: 8 Other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown. When he said this, he called out, He who has ears to hear, let him hear. (NIV) Proverbs 11: 30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and he who wins souls is wise. (NIV) I am grateful for those who planted and tended trees that have lived 150 years. I am even more

3 3 Old trees and new ones grateful for Christians who planted the seeds of the faith in Jesus Christ into others lives 150 years ago, and for the multiplication of those seeds so that today we have living followers of Jesus around us. May we also plant those seeds, so that in generations to come the seeds will continue to multiply and bear fruit, as souls are brought to life in Jesus Christ. Your pastor, planting, James T. The second event will be participating in the congregational bowling outing on the weekend of October 20th, at Merivale Bowling Lanes. Don't forget to sign up in the Gathering Place! 5 5 Announcements Dear Parkwood Presbyterian Congregation, It was a very hard and sad year for us when Lyle was diagnosed with incurable aggressive prostate cancer a year ago August. He continually lost his mobility to walk and was in a hospital bed at home since the end of June. Sadly for us, he passed away suddenly but peacefully this August 2nd. I and family thank you for your thoughts and prayers for us over the year. We also appreciated receiving sympathy cards and were happy to see many of you at his wake and funeral. We have a lot of wonderful family memories we will treasure forever, but we and many will miss him dearly. With our thanks and appreciation, Lynda Nesbitt & family From the Pastoral Care Team: The Pastoral Care Team is aware of some members in the neighborhood who on occasion would appreciate a ride to worship. If you are able to periodically help by driving one or more members to worship on Sunday mornings, please notify the church office or one of the members of the Pastoral Care Team. From Session: Please avoid bringing peanuts or any nuts, or products containing them, into the church building. Lunch and Learn October 15th Lunch at 12:00PM noon, followed by a speaker at 1:00 PM. This month's speaker will be Hank Vander Velde, a specialist in Nature photography, focusing on wildlife (birds and animals). Hank will give us an introduction to the 2019 Calendars for The Ottawa Mission program and share with us his light hearted slide presentation entitled Fun With Wildlife Photography. Come join us for lunch and stay for some interesting wildlife photos everyone is welcome. Calendars for The Ottawa Mission will be available for sale ($22.00) to help provide Christmas dinners to the homeless. Please sign up on the sheet in the Gathering Place if you can help with any of the following: soup, sandwiches, dessert, setting up tables and chairs for lunch, or to clear up after the event. 6 6 Operation Christmas Child 2018 Operation Christmas Child is a project of Samaritan s Purse. Samaritan s Purse is a Christian relief and development organization that takes its name from Jesus Christ s story in the Bible of the Good Samaritan. Like that Good Samaritan, Samaritan s Purse provides aid to hurting people victims of war, disease, disaster, poverty, famine, and persecution. Through the Operation Christmas Child program, Shoe Boxes are shipped to remote corners of the world in order to bring joy, hope, and the message of God`s love to millions of boys and girls. Following shoe box gift distribution, many children have the opportunity to participate in The Greatest Journey. Through this voluntary discipleship program, hundreds of thousands of children come to faith in Jesus Christ each year, and experience the eternal impact of Operation Christmas Child. The Parkwood Mission Team would like to thank our church family for partnering once again with the 2018 Operation Christmas Child Shoe Box Programme. Our Collection Day date this year is Sunday, Oct 28th and the Dedication Sunday date is Sunday, Nov 4th. Shoe Boxes and literature will be available for pick up in the Gathering Place on Sundays starting October 14th. To assist with the administration of this project, please bring filled shoe boxes to the church on either Oct 28th or Nov 4th only. submitted by Stewart Elder, Mission Team At first we had no idea what (the Etch A Sketch) was. After having it displayed on a shelf for a couple of months, my sister was dusting and she turned the knobs. When she saw the line going up and down on the screen she was so excited. Yuliya, Central Asia I was always late because I lacked a watch. Opening my shoebox gift, I found one. Now I am always on time for school. Niyonkuru, Burundi I absolutely loved the washcloth. As an orphan I had to share a towel with about 20 kids. So when I got the washcloth I actually thought it was my own personal towel. Vladimir, Russia The toothbrush meant a lot My favorite items in my shoebox were school supplies. 7 7 Congregational Bowling Event in October Planning for the TIME OUT events is underway for the coming year, based on your choices on the questionnaire last spring. Your popular choice of bowling will be the first event! Date: October 19th or 20th Place : Merivale Bowling Alley 1916 Merivale Rd. (south of Hunt Club Rd.) Time: 7:00PM (earlier to fit shoes) Price minimum $9.50 /person / 1 game: ($7 /person, tax included + $2.50 / person for shoe rental) or $ 16.00/person / 2 games NOW is the time to sign up because we need 20 people minimum and 2 weeks' notice to reserve lanes. 9 9 New Books in the Library Body Life: The Book That Inspired a Return to the Church's Real Meaning and Mission by Ray C. Stedman Do you long to experience deep koinonia fellowship in your life? Ray Stedman helps you discover the dynamic purpose of the church and the exciting role of each member in the body of Christ. 10 10 Session Summary May 28th, 2018 Proposed changes to the Session guidelines for the slush fund were approved. A copy of the revised guidelines will be circulated by to elders. It was agreed to contribute $75 from the slush fund to the Meals on Wheels organization in memory of Phil Campbell. As assistance to our new treasurer, the auditor suggested that someone prepare the non payroll cheques. Brenda Featherstone agreed to do this on a trial basis. Session accepted and approved this offer. There is no money designated for conferences in the budget approved by the congregation. In the future, if money for conferences is included in the budget, it was agreed that it should be spread out for a range of congregational work. Parkwood will not be receiving money from the Government Summer Grant Program which we have used for many years to hire a summer student. This means that there will be no summer student to staff the office during the summer months. Several options to provide office coverage were discussed. It was decided that the Facility Management team would ask Dalia if she would be willing to work the last two weeks of August. Also, Alta MacFie volunteered to coordinate volunteers who would come at mid day to check phone messages and s through mid August. Dianne Nickerson and Jan Sheridan have volunteered to be part of the group coming to check, but more volunteers are needed. Our representatives to Presbytery were renewed for another year. It was agreed that the wording for the plaque to accompany the Brascoupe painting will be: "We acknowledge that this site on which Parkwood Church, Ottawa gathers for worship and fellowship is within the traditional unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabeg people." Two trees with limbs overhanging our neighbour s property and pool must be cut down. The Sarang Presbyterian Church has changed its name to the Ottawa Korean Presbyterian Church (OKPC). The mission plaque donated to Parkwood by the OKPC (completed by Brian Graham) will be hung on the wall outside the doors to the sanctuary. It will be unveiled on a date mutually convenient to Justin and others of the OKPC and Parkwood.

11 11 Session Summary June 25th, 2018 Several people have volunteered to come to the church building at noon during the summer months to check and phone messages. The lag in paying bills has been eliminated as of June. The mission plaque was installed on June 3rd. There was a sense of delight among those present at the unveiling of the plaque. The proposed terms of reference for the Planned Giving Group were approved. The main purposes of the group are, first, to administer the fund based on policies and procedures published by the Planned Giving office of the Presbyterian Church in Canada and, second, to offer an extra dimension of stewardship for the members and friends of our church family. The recommendation by the Facility Management team to have a three year plan to address certain maintenance issues and to prepare a plan with priorities and phasing was approved. A recommendation to update Parkwood s statement on peanut allergies to please avoid bringing peanuts or tree nuts or products containing them into the church building was approved. Look for these words to appear in the bulletin and Pulse from time to time. The contract for Victoria Mabie is being renewed. The mid week fellowship starts on July 4th and runs through the end of August. The study will focus on the book of Psalms with the help of a DVD by a university professor. There were 75 in attendance at the church picnic and 82 were served communion on June 3rd. submitted by Dennis Featherstone, Clerk of Session Barrhaven Bible Study Want to join a small group and participate in lifelong learning of the Christian faith? Come join us in a study of the Westminster Confession of Faith. The fall session of this weekly study begins on Wednesday, October 3rd from 7:30PM 9:00PM at the home of John and Martha Fair at 99 Stoneway Drive (just off Woodroffe near Farm Boy), and continues until Wednesday, December 19th.
