2 On Sunday we will stop and remember those who have given their lives in service of their country. The significance of the centenary of the signing of the armistice makes this year even more poignant. Sacrifice is a central theme of the whole Bible. As we were reminded by Martin last Sunday, the priests were required to offer sacrifice for the sins of the people. In the New Testament, Jesus offers himself as the one perfect sacrifice for the sins of the world. In John s Gospel he records those famous words of Jesus, Greater love has no man than this, that he should lay down his life for his friends. The sacrifice of Jesus was not the defeat that it appeared to those gathered around the cross, instead it was the ultimate victory. As Jesus initiated the meal, we now call Holy Communion, he said, do this in remembrance of me. This Sunday we remember those who have laid down their lives in service of their country. As we do so let us also remember the sacrifice of Jesus and choose to live in victory of the cross. We will remember them. Tim is a Local Lay Minister in the Church of England and the Chairman of the Board of Theos a Christian Think Tank. An itinerant preacher and international speaker he is engaged across UK/International business, academia and the charity/humanitarian world. A Tutor at the Leadership Trust, he sits on the Ethics Board of a major UK technology company; is a Visiting/Honorary Professor at two UK Universities; and the President of the Institute of Civil Protection and Emergency Management. Tim Cross was commissioned into the British Army in He commanded at every level, from leading a small Bomb Disposal Team in Northern Ireland in the 1970 s to commanding a Division of 30,000 in 2004/07. His last command was as General Officer Commanding, Theatre Troops, Iraq. Since retiring from the Army in 2007, Tim has been critical of the planning for Iraq after the removal of Saddam Hussein's government, giving evidence to the Iraq Inquiry that he urged politicians to delay the invasion, and calling the post-war planning "woefully thin". He serves as an advisor to the House of Commons Defence Select Committee and to several private companies. He is also a visiting lecturer at several British universities. As always, we welcome all men irrespective of faith or none. It's an excellent opportunity to bring along non-christian friends and 7/10
