1 Vance Memorial Presbyterian Church Rev. Erica L. Harley, Senior Pastor 905 National Road, Wheeling, WV (mobile) ( ) (office) vancechurch.org (website) (fax) Faith in Action Caregivers and Kirke s Homemade Ice Cream Celebrity Clergy Scooper Day Saturday August 11 NOON-4pm. 1-2pm The Rev. Erica Harley from Vance Memorial Presbyterian Church will be a celebrity scooper! Please come support her and Faith in Action. After all, to lend your support, all you have to do is eat ice cream! Proceeds from the sale of ice cream cones and cups as well as all tips will be donated to Faith in Action Caregivers, a marvelous local charity that provides transportation and support for the elderly and disabled in Belmont, Ohio, and Marshal counties. The Dog (and Cat) Days of Summer On Sunday, August 19 th worship will be held at 10 am in the church Fellowship Hall as it will include a special ritual of blessing of the pets. This notion goes clear back to the time of St. Francis of Assisi who was well known for his love of animals and developed a blessing for them in his own garden. On this particular Sunday we will worship as a congregation with a segment of our time devoted to blessing the pets. We already anticipate dogs, cats, hamsters, birds, and even fish. All pets must be leashed or crated unless they are the stuffed animals of children who do not have their own pets at home. Following worship a time of fellowship and fun is planned with a cook-out with hot dogs & the fixin s. Come and enjoy the Spirit of Vance. IN THIS ISSUE Deacons....2 Birthdays....3 Vance Families...4 Committees....5 Missionaries...6 Worship Schedule...7 Keeping in Touch...8 The church office will be open Mon-Thur. 9am-3pm and Fridays 9am-12pm Mark Your Calendars for September Some exciting things are being planned for this upcoming fall. First please know that Sunday, September 9 th will be Homecoming Sunday, a day to mark the end of the summer and the beginning of an exciting church year. Prior to worship Church School will begin at 9 am - FOR ALL AGES including for adults. We will be asking someone to lead each week s adult session which will meet in the church library. Anyone wishing to volunteer to lead just one session should talk to Erica or Jane. User-friendly curriculum will be provided. Our 10 am Worship on September 9 th will include special music which is always worth our time and effort (and more importantly, worth God s time and effort). Cupcakes and coffee will follow worship. So this time of worship and fellowship promises to be a great day for all. And finally, tentatively speaking, on Wednesday nights beginning on September 12 th Vance will start a new program that may be called Soup & Stuff. The idea behind this is that the community at Vance will gather for a light meal of soup and bread only and then have time to engage in church programming. The & Stuff part of this initially will include dismissal for those who want to participate in the chancel choir and educational programming led by the church pastor. This could blossom, and we hope it will, into a time when multiple educational opportunities could be offered or committees/commissions could meet or children and youth programming could happen or who knows? What are your good ideas for something like this? For now, however, we hope that you will keep your calendars and your minds open for the possibilities of Wednesday nights. See you in September. Come enjoy the Spirit of Vance.
2 DEACON NOTES On a monthly basis, Deacons send greeting cards to church members on the concern list. We also send birthday cards and thinking of you cards to church members. Thank you to the congregation for continued support for our Food Pantry. Envelopes are placed in the pews for members to donate financially if you would prefer giving in that regard rather than bringing in food items. Your monetary donations should be placed in the offering plate. One or two brown grocery bags of food are given to families, depending on the size of the family. In June we gave out 8 10 bags. The recipients are truly needy in our community and are appreciative. The Deacons donated $115 to Youth Services System for their Celebrate Youth Festival which will be held at Wheeling Park on Thursday, August 2, Parents, teens, and children will meet exhibitors with information about healthy activities and life choices. Festival participants will have free access to Wheeling Park s attractions. Activities for youth of all ages, entertainment, prizes and food. Families who cannot afford vacations or a day at the park find Celebrate Youth an informative, friendly event. More than 26,000 people have attended Celebrate Youth Festival since it started in The Deacons are continuing support of Partner in Education with Woodsdale School. Our annual ice cream social turned into a Klondike Feast for all the teachers, staff, and volunteers at the school at the end of May We will start working on our School Supply Drive this summer, so you can start watching for back to school sales and pick up those bargains. The Deacons organized a volunteer day at Appalachian Outreach, Inc. in Moundsville on Saturday July 7, 9am-Noon. Thank you to all the volunteer who joined together to help sort, organize, and pack supplies to West Virginians in need. We shined the light of Christ to the Ohio Valley and Beyond! Thank you again, to the congregation, for your donations and assistance. Our church is making a positive impact on the community.

6 OUR MISSIONARIES Mission Liberti This month, Philadelphia Cru will host Mission Liberti, a summer mission project designed for college students to gain a heart for city ministry both to their peers as they share their faith with other young people as well as to the homeless, poor, marginalized, and less fortunate. The Philly Cru website ( describes the vision behind the project: In the city of 'brotherly love, many have never experienced the greatest love of all. Liberti is Latin for freed people. In John chapter 8, Jesus says, If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. As Jesus frees us from our sins and from ourselves, we are liberated to love God and love others. Though we personally continue to raise our monthly financial gap to be able to work as full-time missionaries in Philadelphia, we have been given permission to work in a part-time capacity with this summer mission project. Thirteen students and seven staff arrived in late May and will spend four weeks on three main objectives: LOVE, SERVE, and GROW. LOVE: It is because of God s love that we are both able and compelled to love those around us. Mission Liberti gives college students the opportunity to experience more of His great love and in turn practice showing this love to urban residents, city college students, and their teammates. SERVE: Love for people and for the city sends these students and staff outside of their comfort zones to serve those in need. As they enter into some of the roughest neighborhoods and most spiritually dark campuses in Philly, we are trusting God to use this team as they proclaim and demonstrate the gospel in an urban context. As they do this, they gain knowledge and experience in ministering to students, addicts, the poor, the homeless, and those from other cultures. GROW: As the Mission Liberti team loves and serves the city, they cannot help but be transformed themselves. Living in close community with other students, mission staff, and local church members challenges students to grow in the gospel that is powerful to change lives the lives of those they are serving as well as their own. We appreciate your prayers, both for us to be fully funded by the end of the summer, as well as for the success of Mission Liberti this month. Contact Us: Caleb and Claire Bermudez 835 Wilder Street, Philadelphia, PA Caleb.Bermudez@cru.org Claire.Bermudez@cru.org Because of His Love, Caleb, Claire, Lydia, Elena, & Aslan Support our Missionaries! Erica Harley Sanctuary Flowers Would you like to beautify the sanctuary during worship? Memorialize or honor a loved one? There are many Sundays available for placing flowers on either side of the chancel. If you would like to sign-up on a Sunday to provide flowers in worship, please check the calendar on the clipboard in the Narthex, fill out the form found in the pamphlet stand and submit it to the church office. Sign your name on an available date on the calendar on the clipboard, or call the church office for a date. After the worship service, you may take your flowers or the Deacons can bless a shut-in with them if you wish. Are you interested in the history of the church? Do you like to organize things? Are you unafraid of a little dust? A group of Vance folks will soon be organizing the church s archives, with a goal of getting everything in order by the time of the church s 125th anniversary in If you d like to help, contact Jeanne Finstein ( or jfinstein@frontier.com). Sign Up to Be a Liturgist Liturgy literally means work of the people, as it indicates that we who are the people of God should be engaged in working to honor God in worship. That s why we seek to have moments through which the people can participate in worship like the singing of hymns, responsive readings, and unison prayers. But the people of God need guides to help us through our journey to participate in worship and liturgists are intended to be just such guides. A Sunday morning liturgist performs a vital function in encouraging the people of God to worship with our whole hearts. Sign up today to help your congregation with the prayers of confession and dedication. Be a Liturgist! Add your name to the list at the Welcome Center in the Narthex or /tell Sue soabraham@aol.com!
