2 I would just like to hear some good news, someone recently said to me, I would like to hear about lovely weather instead of devastating hurricanes, wildfires and earthquakes. I would like to hear about people getting along instead of fighting about everything. I understand that, I feel the same way at times. Is there any good news out here? I believe there is and I think it takes eyes of faith to see God s goodness in the midst of difficult times. I was reminded of a quote attributed to Mr. Rogers. He said, When I was a boy and would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, Look for the helpers, you will always find people who are helping. I love that quote and I think about it when I see bad things. Mr. Roger s mother was right, you will always find people who are helping. I think that is our job, as followers of Jesus Christ, we are to be the helpers. I am so proud to be a part of a congregation of helpers. Our congregation has raised over $1000 for hurricane relief and the confirmation class will hold a bake sale on Sunday, October 8 to add to that. Thanks for you generous help. I am also proud to be a part of a congregation that realizes that there is hope in hopeless times and that hope is found in God. What do you do when things look bad? I think the Apostle Paul was on to something when he said this in Philippians 4:4-9 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable if anything is excellent or praiseworthy think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you. That portion of scripture has come to me twice in the last 24 hours. The first time is was our opening devotion at our Staff Parish Relations Committee (SPRC) meeting and the second time it was written on my coffee cup from one of my favorite baristas. It must be a good word for us today! You have to look for the good when the world wants to show us everything that is wrong. and in that, I believe, we expereince the peace of God. 3 WIC - Women in Christ met on September 8, 2017 in Fellowship Hall with ten members present. Bev Achey was the hostess. The meeting opened with a presentation by Julie Light, the "school nurse" at Lisbon School. That lady is SO much more than a school nurse! She is a counselor, a social worker, a mental health professional; a mandatory reporter for child abuse, a staff supporter--the list could go on and on. We were quite impressed with all the different ways she supports our children in Lisbon. We were particularly interested in how we could help with the "Care Packages for Kids" that she manages. We have chosen this as our mission project for this year, concentrating on helping her meet the needs as she sees them. She mentioned again how wonderful it was when our church children collected change from the whole church body to help support this program. It is a much needed avenue for us to help our local community. After her presentation we went into our regular meeting, answering roll call by telling what we haul around in the trunk of our cars. The Springville Ladies Day is September 13 and those who want to go will carpool at the church at 1:00. There will be a UMW quarterly business meeting on October 7 at the church at 10 AM. Diane Miller presented the lesson from the UMW Handbook about Lydia, a woman who, both before and after hearing Paul preach, devoted herself to local mission projects in her area. The next meeting will be on October 13, when Sharon Headington and Wendy Johnson will be co-hostesses and Connie Costas will lead the lesson Nancy Forbes UMW QUARTERLY BUSINESS MEETING OCOTBER 7 th to discuss fundraisers and missions SCS - At our September meeting we welcomed Deena M. back to the fold. At our next meeting October 17 th will focus on A Time for Silence and Speaking chapter 10 with Tracy as our Leader; Penny as Hostess and Jan as Co Hostess. Young Women s group ages of will be held at 6:30 pm on the 2 nd Wednesday of every month. If you would like more information or have any questions please contact Daphne at 815/ Walk to Emmaus Walk to Emmaus is called a short course in Christianity, but it is so much more. It is a chance to experience the grace of God at work through the testimonies and actions of many Christians from many different churches. There are two weekends that are coming in the fall at Camp Io-Dis-E-Ca near Solon. Men s Walk to Emmaus Oct , Bob Brus will be the Lay Leader for that weekend. Gary Nelson and Russ Rasmussen will also be attending this weekend. Women s Walk to Emmaus Nov. 9-12, 2017 Pastor Karen will be the Spiritual Director for that weekend. Renee Masters will also be attending this weekend. My first thought after I attended Walk to Emmaus was, That must be what heaven is like. It was a chance to get away from the business of everyday life and really focus on my relationship with Christ. I learned ways to communicate my faith with others, including my own husband, Gary. Walk to Emmaus was a life-changer for us. We have made lifelong friends through Emmaus, like many of the folks from Lisbon UMC who have also been involved in this retreat. This was the community that helped me discern my call into ministry. 4 John Nilsen Sho! Bio 2016 John Nilsen was born in Seattle, Washington in The Nilsen family moved to Portland, Oregon in Nilsen began studying classical piano from his mother at age six. Continuing his musical education, he began playing guitar at age fourteen. John moved to Ashland, Oregon in 1974 to attend Southern Oregon College (Southern Oregon University). Nilsen graduated in 1979 with a Bachelor of Arts in English, and was honored by the institution in 1995 in recognition of his outstanding achievements, dedicated efforts and leadership in the field of the performing arts with the Distinguished Alumnus Award, the most prestigious award bestowed upon Southern Oregon University graduates. Nilsen founded the Magic Wing recording label in The label has a catalog of nineteen successful titles, each with international distribution. Before founding Magic Wing, John recorded three successful solo piano records on LA s, Eagle Records ( ), has recorded 16 on his own Magic Wing label and has had fifteen other CDs licensed in countries including Germany, Great Britain, The Philippines, Canada, Taiwan, Singapore bringing reported total record sales to well over one million copies sold. Having performed in Europe, Asia and all fifty U.S. States countless times, John Nilsen has also had two hundred and fifty of his compositions and musical arrangements receiving royalties world wide. John played 250 performances in 2015 throughout the USA and Europe. Please remember to have a family member call or the church or Pastor Karen with information that allows us to make a visit to the hospitals or to a recovery center and put the person and or family on the prayer chain.
