IGNATIAN SPIRITUALITY IN SCOTLAND IN SCOTLAND A Newsletter of Scottish Ignatian Groups March 2012 Issue No. 9 General Editor: Eileen Cassidy snd, Ignatian Spirituality Centre, 35 Scott Street, Glasgow, G3 6PE eileen.cassidy@iscglasgow.co.uk Editorial When looking at the liturgy of Easter Sunday morning, I saw something of my own attitude to life in the Gospel account of the visit to the tomb of Mary of Magdala, Peter and John. I became aware of how often I approach life looking only for the ordinary and thus miss the extraordinary! I became aware of the occasions when I want to act upon the full significance of what I sense deep down within myself, but fail to do so, for fear of being wrong or of my hopes being dashed! And I m pretty much an expert at prolonging the time it takes for the unexpected to penetrate my consciousness, because of being absorbed in the past or the future, and of clinging to my own interpretation of things. Thankfully for the Church, light dawned relatively quickly for Mary of Magdala and the other disciples, and it did so with remarkable results. Freed from their own interpretation of events, and freed by their new identity and new-found confidence in the risen Jesus, the eyes of their minds and hearts were opened, and, in the energy of the Holy Spirit, the Church was born and grew, despite continued and severe persecution. As I read the contributions for the current newsletter, I had a strong sense of community: might I call it kingdom? There are networks of groups that are interrelated through common membership. There are groups which are formed and where friendships develop through sharing during courses and/or events. There are groups which are created in the silence of retreats. There are teams who work together only occasionally, but among whom there are strong bonds. There are staff, families and volunteers, the invisible support groups of spirituality centres, without whom the work of those centres would be very difficult, if not impossible. There are long-established groups and newly formed groups. In other words there is much evidence of the presence and growth of the kingdom, if only I open my eyes and look for it, allow myself to be surprised by it, and then acknowledge and respond to what I see. At a time when there is so much in church and society to evoke despondency, it s good to be reminded by the Gospel of the value, for self and others, of being alert to the positive, and of taking time to nurture within ourselves an attitude that looks at the ordinary and sees the extraordinary. And it s heartening to hear this affirmed and supported by Positive Psychology, a secular science (p.5), and also by a holistic approach to spirituality (pp. 9-10). And so, thanks to that night the night of the resurrection (cf p. 11) - and to the disciples response to it, we can wake up, not just on Easter morning, but every morning, and step forth to see and create the kingdom wherever we go, with complete confidence in the words of the risen Jesus, as they vibrate within us: I am risen and am with you! Congratulations to two of these groups: the Coach House which celebrates its twentieth anniversary (May 26-27), and the Lantern Group, a relatively new group which has started offering Ignatian events in South East Scotland. And finally - Happy Easter to All. - - Eileen Cassidy, snd

2 THANK YOU, ALI On Sunday March 11 th we held a combination of an Afternoon of Prayer in Lent for the Friends of the ISC and, immediately following, an enjoyable tea-time celebration for Ali Newell. The first part of the afternoon focussed on the Lenten theme of Praying the Passion and incorporated poetry, scripture and song. Resources were offered around the theme of the Third Week of the Spiritual Exercises as we move towards Holy Week and Easter. After the initial input there was a real atmosphere of stillness and reverence as each of us found a familiar corner of the ISC to take some time of quiet for ourselves in the middle of Lent. However, at 3.00 pm Easter came early with the arrival of Ali and two of her family who kindly accompanied her for the afternoon. We all enjoyed welcoming them and it was good to be able to show them how much we have appreciated what Ali has meant to us. This was done in the form of a short slide presentation with impromptu commentary on some good memories of the ISC for Ali. Much of this was listed in the appreciation published in the previous newsletter. Sufficient to say for this edition that we all found ourselves sharing Ali s infectious laughter as we watched slides of artwork and Iona, labyrinths and Spiritual Accompaniment courses. It all culminated with a presentation to Ali from the ISC and from her friends followed by tea and a celebration cake! Subsequently Ali wrote to us, asking that her thanks be shared with all the Friends of the ISC. Part of her letter reads: Dear All, It was a lovely party. Thank you so much for the gorgeous flowers, cake, bottle, cards, fun slide show and generous gift. I am very touched by your thoughtfulness. It has been a joy and a privilege to be with the ISC for the last 10 years and I know I will not lose contact with you or the wider circles of the Epiphany group, FIOP, L'Arche and the Bield. I feel I have learned so much from you all and felt encouraged in my faith journey with you. My grown up children, who came with me today, enjoyed meeting many of you and commented on what nice, friendly people I was around at the ISC. I agree! I look forward to seeing you at Ignatian gatherings in the future. May you continue to know the blessing of the Spirit with you. Much love and many prayers - Ali - - Tom McGuinness

3 ENCOUNTERING GOD in CIRCLE DANCE and POETRY On Saturday, 14 th January, a group of us met at the ISC to explore our relationship with God through circle dance and poetry. The day was divided into 5 parts with alternating circle dance and poetry sessions and a gathering-up session at the end in the chapel. We explored the themes of darkness, light and regeneration. After an introduction about the history and place of dance in worship, we started to learn the dances. They were gentle, yet meaningful, and everyone was able to join in. They knitted people together, creating a sense of group. The first poetry session was based on choosing a poem from a selection laid out in the chapel. We took these to a quiet spot to reflect on what the poem was saying to us as individuals. Then there was time together in groups to share our thoughts. The second poetry session gave an opportunity to write our own poem, listen to poetry being recited on a CD, or choose a different poem for reflection. At the end of the afternoon, this was all brought together as worship in the chapel, with circle dances we had learned during the day interspersed with an offering of the thoughts or poems we had encountered. All enjoyed the blend of dance and poetry, reflection and sharing. - - Caroline Hunter and Margaret Fielding LENT RETREAT in DAILY LIFE at the ISC We commenced our Lent retreat in daily life with the story of Zacchaeus climbing a tree to see Jesus. When Jesus said I m coming to your house today a few of us wanted to rush home and tidy up first! However I know that Jesus is happy to find us as we are, dusty corners included! I hope that the seven weeks of the retreat have been a time for the eight participants to welcome Jesus and enjoy his company as we move into Spring and perhaps a time for new growth. We shall have our closing evening on the Monday of Holy Week, a final group evening to reflect on the experience. It is a privilege to host the retreat and to journey alongside all who take part. May Easter be a time of resurrection for all. - - Jane MacKichan

4 OPENING INTO SPRING A TASTER RETREAT IN THE MIDST OF LENT AT THE CONFORTI CENTRE Once again the Xaverian community at the Conforti Institute, Coatbridge, welcomed a group of twenty-one from the ISC for a Taster Retreat. The weekend helped us reflect on where we were in Lent, very close to Holy Week, and also to sense the signs of Spring in the air and the hope of Easter joy. We enjoyed the hospitality of the Conforti Institute ( and shared a taste of different ways of praying and of recognising God in our lives. On the first evening we experienced the prayer of welcome - God s welcome, which comes to us in so many ways, not least through the welcome we give to each other. Before long our retreat group felt like a group of friends. We had an opportunity to share with one another in small groups our hopes for the weekend. A gentle night prayer led us into the quiet of the night. Tibhirine in Algeria. Others explored ways of praying with art materials. The evening began with input on St Ignatius prayer of Examen, followed by an opportunity for a one-to-one meeting with an ISC prayer guide to share what we were most grateful for and what was most challenging in the day. We finished with moving meditations on Jesus washing the feet of his friends, and on his journey to the cross. Saturday began with a hearty breakfast and continued with an introduction to the prayer of Lectio Divina, or contemplative reading, and also the prayer of colloquy or heart-to-heart talk with God, often needing very few words at all. Another time of quiet then helped individuals find space just to be with God in their own personal way. Group sharing followed and it was soon time for lunch. The afternoon offered a number of options. Some watched the film Of Gods and Men, a moving and inspiring account of the last days of the Cistercian community of After a shorter night than we might have hoped for - the clocks went forward! - and after a simple Sunday Eucharist, the final day began with two more tastes of prayer : first a time of listening in stillness and then the prayer of imaginative contemplation. Jesus kindness to the man by the pool of Bethzatha echoed God s compassion for each of us. A final opportunity for personal quiet space led us into review and reflection on the whole weekend. Everyone thanked the Conforti staff for their contribution to a welcoming and enjoyable weekend, and the ISC team for the inspiring inputs and gentle accompaniment both in groups and in personal meetings. - - Tom McGuinness

5 LOOKING FOR the LIFE A Day with Roger Dawson S.J. On March 17 th the ISC welcomed a dozen or so guests to join the second year participants in the Spiritual Accompaniment course for a day with Roger Dawson. From the moment I learned that Roger would be coming to the ISC, I had a sense that we were in for a treat. In preparation I bought the book to which I knew he would be referring - Flourish by Martin Seligman. The title and the author s emphasis on well-being, as opposed to happiness, resonated with a sense of well being that has been growing in my life. I had read with interest what Seligman had written about PERMA - Positive emotion, Engagement, positive Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishment - and thought that there was something of value here. Thanks to Roger s presentation on PERMA, I became aware of elements in my life that, unknown to me at the time, had combined to create a deep sense of well being. I recognised all five PERMA elements in my life, and found this affirming and consoling; and, at the back of my mind, I began to sense how this insight could feed into my listening to others, now that I am close to completing the course in the art of Spiritual Accompaniment. Discussion of Seligman s book filled the morning, and there were two more treats in store for us. The first was entitled Psychology of Spirituality: Transitional Objects, Transitional Space and God. At first glance, this seemed daunting. However, Roger s power of delivery drew us in and, before long, we were getting it. The concept of transitional objects, thus designated, was new to me, but I was soon able to identify and understand in a completely new light my own transitional objects and those of the Catholic Church, together with the transitional space where all Religion seems to find a home. The last treat was entitled The Experience of Flow. During the preceding break I had been wondering how two people respond so differently to horrendous events in their lives, particularly when young: some find well-being in later life, while others experience the opposite. I was astonished to hear Roger pose this as a question in his introduction to Flow which he unpacked, using phrases like the experience of deep absorption in an activity and being in the zone. He proceeded to explain that Flow leads some people to greater resilience/ persistence/ commitment/ achievement and - of particular interest to me that it appears to act as a buffer for adversity. At the final tea break we articulated that we had been totally absorbed and engaged in Flow throughout the day. That absorption continues as I attempt to communicate a little of the richness of this day. How do we capitalise on all of the above? In true Ignatian spirit, Roger shared with us how he has incorporated into his daily Examen a gratitude log, recording 3 things (blessings) for which he is grateful, and the reason(s) for considering them as blessings. Looking back over my day with Roger Dawson SJ, I could probably record 33! And judging by the faces of those around me I was not alone! - - Catherine Nolan

LENTEN RETREAT in DAILY LIFE ST ANDREWS UNIVERSITY 6 It has been an ISC tradition for a good number of years to offer a biennial Retreat in Daily Life for students and staff at St Andrews University through Lent. Both this year and two years ago, the ISC worked alongside prayer guides from the Epiphany Group without whom it would not have been possible to offer the retreat. This year we decided to offer the RDL as a joint ISC /Epiphany Group venture, with Carmel Byrne generously offering to help co-ordinate on behalf of the Epiphany Group. This feels a good development as, together, we can pool our resources to ensure that this RDL is sustained for years to come. This year we had 28 students and staff making the retreat which we opened at Canmore Catholic chaplaincy and closed at St Leonard s Chapel. The university chaplains, Rev Donald McEwan and Fr Andrew Kingham, both new in post, are very supportive of the retreat and keen to ensure it continues into the future. On the closing day of the retreat, the guiding team took a wander along the West Sands beach after a celebratory lunch. As we reflected together, we all felt it a real privilege to accompany the students as they step into their independent lives and begin finding a shape for their future. It is a joy to see them discovering and gaining confidence in God s presence in their lives a true compass for life as they seek to navigate the varied demands and pressures faced at this formative stage. It was also a joy to work with the team of mobile prayer guides who were generous enough to travel from far and wide each week Carmel from Perth, Margaret from Edinburgh, Dot from Dunfermline, Judith from Stonehaven, and Libby from Blair Atholl. Well done all here s to next time! - - Julia Ling

7 THE COACH HOUSE CELEBRATING 20 YEARS, The Coach House was the dream of Ursula Burton and Joyce Ferne who wanted to establish an open retreat centre which was more a home than an institution. It was to be a place where all who were seeking answers to those deeply profound questions, such as Who am I?, What is my purpose? and What do I mean by God?, could come, explore and share their thoughts and feelings in safe and acceptable surroundings. The following comment (echoed by many) encapsulates what we hoped to achieve: I always enjoyed the peace and tranquillity of the Coach House. More than anything it provided a space in which just to be. I think the location of the house contributes to this a lot, with the beautiful water and the woods nearby adding to an atmosphere conducive to reflection. The environment of acceptance and welcome offered made it easier to work through whatever issues I had brought with me. In 1992 the house opened in time for our Easter Retreat led by Fr. Gerry Hughes SJ. At that time the garden had not been completed, nor was there a front porch or staircase to the Sanctuary in the loft. The intrepid meditators, however, were not deterred by having to climb a loft ladder to the prayer space; neither was a wonderful rather elderly Sister who scaled the heights along with the rest of us! Sadly Ursula died in 1993 but her family agreed that the work could continue in the Coach House. By 2000 we had become sufficiently established to set the work up as a registered Charity and we became known as The Coach House Kilmuir Trust and negotiated a 15 year lease with the family. Over the years we have been blessed by the support and work of a good number of volunteers without whom the Coach House would not have survived. Although they are too numerous to name in this article, many of our retreatants will remember with delight Noreen s cooking. Currently Sue Howard has become a valued member of our team. The provision of retreat space has been the heart of our work. Fr Gerry Hughes has led many 6 and 8 day Ignatian retreats and workshops over the years; and he, together with Fr Fintan Creaven SJ, put on our first training programme for Prayer Guides. We took up the reins where they left off, continuing with prayer guide training ourselves. When our trained prayer guides were ready we introduced courses for the next stage of Spiritual Direction and Fr. Gero McLoughlin SJ

8 came to lead a supervision course. We have also been engaged in running Retreats in Daily Life and are delighted that the outreach and interest now spreads from Inverness into the surrounding areas. in the current financial climate this is proving difficult. In addition to Ignatian retreats we also run accompanied retreats for those wishing to reflect on their own material, and we also offer space for people who just want to be. Over the years we have provided a variety of workshops on such varied topics as walking, colour, enneagram, standing stones, dreams, poetry, death and dying, and a widening understanding of Christianity. These have offered support and opportunities for individuals to taste and see something of the divine reality whose Presence permeates all that is. These insights and experiences become nourishment for daily life. The Epiphany Group, with its breadth of membership, has enriched and supported our work. Sharing in the conferences, courses and meetings has enlarged our understanding of the Spiritual Exercises and their continuing relevance and challenge today. Many people at this time are living in uncertainty and this seems to be throwing them off their known safety zones and sureties, which may have had a material basis, and encouraging them to truly KNOW - not with their heads, but with their hearts - that the only certainty in this changing world is their inner connection to the Divine, which makes them who they are. This too is a challenge for us at the Coach House, since our lease expires in 2015 and we have no guarantee that it will be renewed. In order to safeguard the work that we do, we have purchased an adjacent farm building known as The Steadings and are in the process of trying to raise money for its development. But More and more we are wakening up to the fact that our situation mirrors that of so many others, that we are part of the One going through this particular time of our existence. We believe that the more we root ourselves in the security of the Presence of the love that surrounds and fills us, the less likely we are to be blown away by the winds of change. So we celebrate with joyful hearts our 20th Anniversary on 26th/27th May, the Feast of Pentecost. Please see our website for details of our events to which you are all warmly invited. We believe passionately that we have a spiritual part to play in the future to continue to provide a place of safety and welcome where the soul self, this immortal diamond, can emerge and be recognised as the essential core of our being. We give thanks for God s grace at work within us, drawing us into a greater maturity: this invites and enables us to deepen our Yes to serving and sharing in Love s purposes in the world. - - Joyce Ferne and Ruth Flockhart

GARDEN COTTAGE SPIRITUALITY CENTRE 9 The Orchard The Orchard: Dining Room The Cottage The Apple House Garden Cottage Spirituality Centre is situated in the beautiful Perthshire countryside and located within the secluded walled garden of the old Kilgraston estate. It is in an ideal setting for spiritual renewal, rest and relaxation, offering extensive views of the Dron Hills and opportunity for woodland and hill walks. Founded in 1996, the Centre is run by the Society of the Sacred Heart, an international congregation of women dedicated to God s work of transformation in all creation. The mission of the Society is to make known God s love whose source and symbol is the Heart of Christ. In recognition of the belief that God is revealed in all aspects of humanity, the focal point of the Centre is the holistic, spiritual development of the individual. The aim is to nurture the whole person, spiritually, mentally and physically, with a view to effecting deeper wholeness and integration in the reality of daily life. The Centre comprises three buildings, the Orchard, the Cottage and the Apple House. Together they form a sacred space, a place for silence, for prayer and for contemplating the experience of God in life. The Orchard is a unique and beautifully designed building facing into the walled garden, with extensive views of the surrounding countryside. It reflects the nurturing creative spirit, which is at the heart of the work of the Centre. A day facility, the Orchard has a large multipurpose room, dining-room, quiet room, and consulting rooms. The Cottage is a small, comfortable house with a chapel and self-catering facilities. It is located within the walled garden and is in an ideal setting for individuals who desire space for spiritual renewal, rest and relaxation. The Apple House is a specially designed sandstone hermitage situated in a corner of the walled garden, with self-catering facilities, ensuite bedroom and sitting room. It is a beautiful haven for anyone who desires to spend time alone in contemplation, retreat or study. A few years ago some friends organised fund-raising events to establish a labyrinth in the garden. It is now a well walked and much loved feature of the Centre, used by groups as part of a programme or by individuals and retreatants for personal reflection and meditation. Individual guided retreats are offered at the Centre. According to the desires of the individual, these are based on the Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola, or are focussed on the inter-connectedness of the spiritualities of the East and West, or with emphasis on finding God through the threshold of the body. The full Exercises in daily life (Annotation 19) is another option which is offered. As well as supervision, individual sessions of spiritual direction are arranged, offering opportunity to explore the

10 sacred places of our own story, to deepen the awareness of our spiritual heart and to find truth and meaning in our lives. Over the years the hall and dining facilities at the Orchard have been used for training and away days by various groups of people: teachers, businessmen and women, church groups, NHS psychologists, complementary therapists and others who value the ethos, beauty and tranquillity of the setting. The programme of events, published each term, aims to have something for everyone. This year s summer programme includes retreat days on Celtic Christian spirituality, on Nature as Soul Friend, on Mindfulness, on Landscapes and Lifelines, on Healing, on Journalling and on Sacred Heart spirituality. Workshops on Embodying Spirituality and on the Enneagram, together with training sessions on the Capacitar programme of wellness practices, are also being offered. As the years have gone by, the team members at the Centre have recognised that the quiet ambience of the place has grown creatively and that this has been much appreciated by retreatants and workshop participants who come from all over Scotland and beyond. Truly they have enhanced by their presence this gift of sacred space. There is a gentleness at the heart of life; that heart is Christ (Old Gaelic saying). - - Barbara Farquharson, rscj MEET THE LANTERN GROUP Jock Stein, Convener (Left); Mark Pratt, Publicity Contact (Right) Focused on Ignatian Spirituality in South East Scotland, the Lantern Group is an ecumenical group who meet about once a month for prayer and a shared meal. These gatherings have been much valued by members of the group, all of whom have undertaken some training in spiritual accompaniment. Our aim is to be a resource for churches and the community. During the year we have offered the following: Guided reflection of various kinds for groups. Last year we offered a series of Lent reflections in Whitekirk which introduced participants to the Ignatian way of prayer. This year we have led a session for the Lothian Presbytery Prayer Promoters. Spiritual direction or accompaniment for individuals. Occasional Quiet Days: Last year we led three Quiet days in Haddington, in January, June and November (and are open to holding them in other locations). Occasional Events with a visiting speaker. Margaret Silf will be speaking to those with training in spiritual accompaniment in North Berwick (St Andrews Blackadder) at 7.30pm on Friday May 4 th. On Sat May 5th she will lead a Quiet Day in Holy Trinity Church, Haddington. One of the most important events for the group itself was a day of reflection on Holy Island last July, followed by time to discern afresh the purpose and direction of the group. We are open to grow in number provided that can happen gradually and organically. - - Jock Stein

11 FOR REFLECTION Easter Proclamation (Exsultet) Rejoice, heavenly powers! Sing, choirs of angels! Exult, all creation around God s throne! Jesus Christ, our King, is risen! Sound the trumpet of salvation! Rejoice, O earth, in shining splendour, radiant in the brightness of your King! Christ has conquered! Glory fills you! Darkness vanishes for ever Rejoice, O Mother Church! Exult in glory! The risen Saviour shines upon you! Let this place resound with joy, echoing the mighty song of all God s people! It is truly right that with full hearts and minds and voices we should praise the unseen God, the all-powerful Father, and his only Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ has ransomed us with his blood, and paid for us the price of Adam s sin to our eternal Father! This is our Passover feast, when Christ, the true Lamb, is slain, whose blood consecrates the homes of all believers. This is the night when first you saved our fathers you freed the people of Israel from their slavery and led them dry-shod through the sea. This is the night when the pillar of fire destroyed the darkness of sin! This is the night when Christians everywhere, washed clean of sin and freed from all defilement, are restored to grace and grow together in holiness. This is the night when Jesus Christ broke the chains of death and rose triumphant from the grave. What good would life have been to us, had Christ not come as our Redeemer? Father, how wonderful your care for us! How boundless your merciful love! To ransom a slave you gave away your son. O happy fault, O necessary sin of Adam, which gained for us so great a Redeemer! Most blessed of all nights, chosen by God to see Christ rising from the dead! Of this night Scripture says: The night will be as clear as day; it will become my light, my joy. The power of this holy night dispels all evil, washes guilt away, restores lost innocence, brings mourners joy; it casts out hatred, brings us peace, and humbles earthly pride. Night truly blessed when heaven is wedded to earth and man is reconciled with God! Therefore, heavenly Father, in the joy of this night, receive our evening sacrifice of praise, your Church s solemn offering. Accept this Easter candle, a flame divided but undimmed, a pillar of fire that glows to the honour of God. Let it mingle with the lights of heaven and continue bravely burning to dispel the darkness of this night! May the Morning Star which never sets find this flame still burning: Christ, that Morning Star, who came back from the dead, and shed his peaceful light on all mankind, your Son, who lives and reigns for ever and ever. R/: Amen
