3 Conversion of St. Paul the Apostle feast day 1/25 Before his conversion, Saul was complicit in the martyrdom of the first deacon and of the Church, Stephen. What was his response a erward? He became even more virulent. He breathed 'murderous threats' against the believers and sought to bring them back in chains. He set off on a journey to Damascus in hot pursuit. But, the Risen Lord had other plans for Saul. "On his journey, as he was nearing Damascus, a light from the sky suddenly flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, "Saul, Saul, why are you persecu ng me?" He said, "Who are you, sir?" The reply came, "I am Jesus, whom you are persecu ng." Saul heard Jesus ask him that probing ques on which changed his life, "Why do you persecute me?" As far as we can tell through either Biblical or historic evidence, Saul had never even met Jesus, at least during His earthly ministry. Yet, because Jesus the Head is inseparably joined to His Church, he was being persecuted by Saul when the disciples were being persecuted by Saul. They were members of His Body. In this encounter, Saul became a witness to the Resurrec on, a prerequisite to being an apostle. This experience opened up for him a life filled with responding to the con nual invita ons of Jesus Christ. It became the framework for con nuing conversion and the driving force behind his apostolic mission to spread the Gospel and plant the Church throughout the known world. The man, who had once persecuted the Way, became the Apostle who walked with Jesus along that Way - and invited so many others to do the same. Before they were called Chris ans in An och (Acts 11:26) they were o en referred to as the Way. Paul, prior to his encounter with the Risen Lord on the Road to Damascus, speaks of having persecuted this Way (Acts 22: 3-16). The expression - the Way - revealed a profoundly important aspect of the self-understanding of the early Chris ans. They lived the Chris an faith as a new way of living, a new way of being human. They saw their lives as being lived in Christ - joined to Jesus, and with one another, for the sake of the world. Their Chris anity was not about 'me and Jesus' but 'me in Jesus'. They knew that as members of His Body they were called to con nue his ongoing work. Jesus is s ll iden fied with His Church. He is the Head and we are the Body. Our own ongoing conversion should involve ongoing conversion to the truth about the Church. The early fathers of the Church would have found the no on that one could be a Chris an without being a member of the Church incomprehensible. Here are quoted texts confirming this iden fica on between belonging to Jesus and belonging to His Church: Let us love the Lord our God; let us love His Church. Let us love Him as our Father and her as our mother. (St. Augus ne) No one can have God as his Father who does not have the Church as his Mother. (St. Cyprian) For where the Church is, there the Spirit of God is also; and where the Spirit of God is, there the Church is, and all grace. And the Spirit is truth" (St. Irenaeus of Lyons) The Church is not some "thing" outside of us, which we try to fix or have our "issues" with. Upon our Bap sm, the Church becomes our home, our mother, the place in which we now live our lives in Christ. In its treatment of the mystery of the Church, the Catechism of the Catholic Church states: "To reunite all his children, sca ered and led astray by sin, the Father willed to call the whole of humanity together into his Son's Church. The Church is the place where humanity must rediscover its unity and salva on." The Church is "the world reconciled." She is that bark which "in the full sail of the Lord's cross, by the breath of the Holy Spirit, navigates safely in this world." According to another image dear to the Church Fathers, she is prefigured by Noah's ark, which alone saves from the flood." (#845) Of course, un l the Lord returns, the Church is s ll composed of human members and thus, she is both human and divine. She is o en wounded and in need of healing. However, she s ll offers the means through which we par cipate in the very life of God. To her has been entrusted the Sacraments and the Word, along with the gi of a teaching office upon which we can depend. Like St Paul, this kind of real, tangible experience of living in the heart of the Church for the sake of the world can become our lived, daily experience. For that to happen, we need, above all else, to pray. Let's ask the Risen Lord who spoke to Saul to open our own eyes to see Him - and our ears to hear His voice. St. Paul's Conversion can become our own. Jesus and the Church Are Inseparable.
4 January: A new beginning January begins a new year and provides us opportunities to begin anew, to make changes and improvements in our physical lives. This year, let us take the opportunity to make changes and improvements in our spiritual lives. With this in mind, here are some suggestions to aid you in your spiritual renewal and growth. Improve your prayer life: With the new year, make a change in your prayer life. You can start saying a Rosary weekly or daily. Say a prayer of thanksgiving before meals, even when having your meal in a restaurant. Each morning Thank God for giving you another day to do his will. Give your children a blessing before they go to school each morning. Make time as a family to pray together. Father Michael Payton coined the saying The family that prays together stays together. With God as the center of your family life, your family will prevail against the outside pressures of the world. Make Mass a central part of your life: You probably already participate in the Mass every Sunday, so add a daily Mass to your routine. What better than to receive Jesus in the Sacrament of the Eucharist and to hear him speak to you in his Word. Receive Forgiveness for your sins: Take advantage of the Sacrament of Reconciliation on a regular basis. There is no feeling in the world better than hearing Christ, through the Priest, tell you that your sins are forgiven. We are given this opportunity each week and you can also make an appointment with Father if you need. Give forgiveness: Just as we are forgiven for our sins and shortcomings, we too must find it in our hearts to give that same forgiveness to those who have hurt or offended us. Live your life in Christ: Live your life the way God has directed us. Practice the Spiritual Works of Mercy (Counsel the doubtful, Instruct the ignorant; Admonish sinners; Comfort the sorrowful; Forgive injuries; Bear wrongs patiently and Pray for the living and the dead). Practice the Corporal works of Mercy also (Feed the hungry; Give drink to the thirsty; Clothe the naked; Shelter the homeless; Visit the sick and imprisoned; Bury the dead.
5 Respect for Life January is the month dedicated to respecting life. What does respecting life mean to you? We know that the Church focuses this month on the atrocity of abortion and the rights of the unborn to be born and live, but respecting life is much more inclusive. We must respect life from the time of conception until natural death. Joseph Cardinal Bernardin, former Archbishop of Chicago, in 1983 called for a broader vision among U.S. Catholics. A vison that would make evident the principles of reverence for the sacredness of all life. This all-embracing reverence includes strong opposition to many evils from abortion to nuclear holocaust to capital punishment. If we truly respect life, we cannot only be pro-life in regards to abortion, we must also be against capital punishment, euthanasia, and unjust wars. All life is sacred to God. The Catechism of the Catholic Church and scripture (New Testament) provides us with the reasons why we must be against these unjust acts. Saint John Paul II forgave the man who attempted to kill him he was merciful towards his attacker. Our world today see so much hate and disrespect for life that daily we hear of killing of others as a way to solve arguments and disagreements. When someone takes a life, society then demands that the person who committed the crime life be ended. Is this justice? No it is revenge. Justice says the guilty must make amends for his actions. Justice also is allowing the guilty the chance to change the chance to turn their life around. Justice demands Mercy. A great example of this is in the life of the Saint Maria Gorretti. At the age of 12 she was attacked and murdered by Allesandro, her neighbor. Before she died, she forgave him with all her heart. She said I want him to be with me in paradise. While in prison for this crime, he had a vision of Maria and awoke a changed man. He publicly denounced his sin. After he served his time for her murder, he testified for at the process for her beatification. He also asked forgiveness from Maria s mother, who forgave him also. May God s love be with us to guide us in our daily lives so we can always choose good and choose life for everyone. With God, all is possible, especially the conversion of sinners.

He knew for thirteen years that he had a vocation to the priesthood before he mentioned it to his family. When his father said that he wanted Francis to be a soldier and sent him to Paris to study, Francis said nothing. Throughout his life he waited for God's will to be clear. He never wanted to push his wishes on God, to the point where most of us would have been afraid that God would give up! God finally made his will clear to Francis while he was riding. Francis fell from his horse three times. Every time he fell the sword came out of the scabbard. Every time it came out the sword and scabbard came to rest on the ground in the shape of the cross. Francis had a bad idea -- at least that's what everyone else thought. This was during the time of the Protestant reformation and just over the mountains from where Francis lived was Switzerland -- Calvinist territory. Francis decided that he should lead an expedition to convert the 60,000 Calvinists back to Catholicism. But by the time he left his expedition consisted of himself and his cousin. His father refused to give him any aid for this crazy plan and the diocese was too poor to support him. Francis' unusual patience kept him working. No one would listen to him; no one would even open their door. So Francis found a way to get under the door. He wrote out his sermons, copied them by hand, and slipped them under the doors. This is the first record we have of religious tracts being used to communicate with people. By the time, Francis left to go home he is said to have converted 40,000 people back to Catholicism. The way of holiness was only for monks and nuns - - not for ordinary people. Francis changed all that by giving spiritual direction to lay people living ordinary lives in the world. But he had proven with his own life that people could grow in holiness while involved in a very active occupation. Why couldn't others do the same? His most famous book, INTRODUCTION TO THE DEVOUT LIFE, was written for these ordinary people in He is patron saint of journalists because of the tracts and books he wrote.
