1 Volume 1 No. 10 A Joint Newsletter from the Ministries of The Presbyterian Church of Prospect and The Mt. Nebo Presbyterian Church November 2018 Thank You Lord Thanks appears 133 times in the English Standard Version of the Bible. That s just a little more than.01 percent of the total number of Scripture words. Many more references show up for Lord, sin, king, and bless. But the number of times a word appears in God s Word is not a fail proof way of finding out how important it is. For instance, grace is used only 128 times but we know it is the backbone of the Bible s message. So too are thanks and thanksgiving essential parts of God s revelation, as well as our daily lives. 3 T I D I N G S Page 3 Thank You Lord Continued from Page If the only prayer you ever say in your life is thank you that would suffice. Meister Eckhart Anyone can be thankful. Parents and teachers, with few exceptions and regardless of their spiritual beliefs, teach children to give thanks. Most, if not all, countries and cultures consider thankfulness a virtue. Giving thanks is essential for a good life. But to whom do we give our greatest thanks, our deepest thanks, and our most enduring thanks? Scripture is clear. Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever. Ps. 136:1 Thankfulness is a believer s response to the goodness and grace of God. As certain as God is good and as long as his grace endures, his people will have reason to give thanks. This means that our thankfulness is not connected, primarily, to our circumstances, feelings, or dreams. We say, Thank You, because You is not us; it is the God of our salvation, our Redeemer, and our Good Shepherd. November is a good month to focus on thanks so we may practice it year round. In addition to God s Word, many things have been said about thanks. Here are a few quotes that caught my eye and made me think. Do any of these touch you? Thanking God everyday for my family, my health, my trials, my success, my tears, my laughter. Everything that makes me and matures me. Thank you for blessing me with a great family, not a perfect one, but a great one. God, thank you for keeping me together when I am falling apart. Thank you, God, for everything in my life. The good and bad. Some were Blessings and some were Lessons. It is not happy people who are thankful. It is thankful people who are happy. Continued on Page 4

4 Page 4 T I D I N G S Thank You Lord Continued from Page 3 Don t think of the things you didn t get after praying. Think of the countless blessings God gave you without you even asking. Thank you, God, for this new day that you give me to live in faith. I do not know everything that will come but you know. I rest in your care and move on. Pray when you feel like worrying. Give thanks when you feel like complaining. Keep going when you feel like quitting. Sometimes I just look up, smile and say, I know that was you, God! Thanks! I ve seen better days, but I ve also seen worse. I don t have everything that I want, but I do have all I need. I woke up with some aches and pains, but I woke up. My life may not be perfect, but I am blessed. God gave you a gift of 86,400 seconds today. Have you used one to say thank you?

5 T I D I N G S Page 5 November Sermons Thanksgiving with Jonah. If you know much about Jonah, thanksgiving is not the first (or second or third) word that would come into your mind. It is a book about a prophet s rebellion against God, negative consequences, despair, and reluctant obedience. It s also a powerful account of God s grace to those who don t know him as well as to those who do. The book of Jonah provides a different way to approach the topic of thanksgiving. That is why we will look closely at what God is saying to us through it in this November sermon series. Come and be-come more thankful as we worship together this month. Nov. 4 Nov. 11 Nov. 18 Nov. 25 The Wrong Way The Raw Truth The Right Wrong The Way Ahead In all the years that the Prospect Historical Society has been holding the BBQ Chicken Dinner fundraisers, Fairground Market has donated all the dinners. Tom s donations and the constant support from my church family, who buy the bulk of the dinners, enables us to pay for our basic expenses for the year. Our membership has been decreasing over the years, which makes this fundraiser very important and keeps the building ownership local. So, a BIG THANK YOU from the Prospect Area Preservation Society Board & Volunteers. - Dawn Szymoniak

New skills are being learned and we are surrounded by God s blessings every day. Our classes took a field trip to Cheeseman Farm at the beginning of October. God blessed us by holding off the rain that day so that we were able to enjoy lots of wonderful fellowship. Our three day students are looking forward to an upcoming field trip to Jennings Nature Reserve for a presentation on How Animals Get Ready For Winter. This month in our classroom we will not only continue learning our ABC s, numbers, shapes, and colors but we will also learn about Veteran s Day and Thanksgiving and the importance of being thankful for God s many blessings in our lives. We will be having our annual Fall Festival as well and we are looking forward to having lots of fun. Many blessings to all and Happy Thanksgiving! It all started with 36 bushels of apples. Peeling began early on Thursday morning. God provided many new faces who became new friends to help with the work. At the end of the day, we were left with 24 1/2 crates of snippets (apple pieces). The coffee was put on and the fires were started at 5:30 am on Saturday morning. Apples were washed and the first kettle went on at 7:15 am. The stirring began... There was a bounty of breakfast goodies to fill our bellies throughout the morning. God provided dry weather, when all around us was rain. The stirring continued... God provided many hands to help. The last of the apples were put in at 11:40 am. The stirring continued... Continued on Page 13

Jars were set up and organized on the tables. The stirring continued... By mid-afternoon 110 lbs of white sugar and 24 lbs of brown sugar, along with the secret blend of spices were added. The stirring continued... At about 4:30, the first kettle came off, and the jarring began. The stirring continued until the last kettle came off at 6 pm. God provided plenty of apple butter to fill our orders - a total of 98 quarts and 498 pints = 86 3/4 gallons. If all this sounds good on paper, you should've seen it in color! Oh wait - you can We ll see you next year!!
