3 Welcome Whoever you are, wherever you are on your journey of faith, you are welcome here. The Liturgy of the Word (Please stand as able) Wilma Jakobsen Hymn: Sing a Song of the Saints of God Hymnal 293 During the hymn, after the altar party processes, you are invited to bring cards, pictures, or mementos to the Altar of Remembrance. Opening Acclamation Celebrant: Blessed be the one holy and living God. People: Glory to God for ever and ever. Collect for Purity Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Collect of the Day Celebrant: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Celebrant: Let us pray. Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son, Christ our Lord: Give us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those ineffable joys that you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen. (Please be seated) The Lesson: Wisdom of Solomon 3:1-9 The souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and no torment will ever touch them. In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died, and their departure was thought to be a disaster, and their going from us to be their destruction; but they are at peace. For though in the sight of others they were punished, their hope is full of immortality. Having been disciplined a little, they will receive a great good, because God tested them and found them worthy of himself; like gold in the furnace he tried them, and like a sacrificial burnt offering he accepted them. In the time of their visitation they will shine forth, and will run like sparks through stubble. They will govern nations and rule over peoples, and the Lord will reign over them forever. Those who trust in him will understand truth, and the faithful will abide with him in love, because grace and mercy are upon his holy ones, and he watches over his elect. After the lesson, the reader says: Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s people. People: Thanks be to God. 3
4 Psalm 24 1 The earth is the Lord s and all that is in it, * the world and all who dwell therein. 2 For it is God who founded it upon the seas * and made it firm upon the rivers of the deep. 3 Who can ascend the hill of the Lord? * and who can stand the holy place? 4 Those who have clean hands and a pure heart, * who have not pledged themselves to falsehood, nor sworn by what is a fraud. 5 They shall receive a blessing from the Lord * and a just reward from the God of their salvation. 6 Such is the generation of those who seek God, * of those who seek your face, O God of Jacob. 7 Lift up your heads, O gates; lift them high, O everlasting doors; * and the King of glory shall come in. 8 Who is this King of glory? * The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord, mighty in battle. 9 Lift up your heads, O gates; lift them high, O everlasting doors; * and the King of glory shall come in. 10 Who is this King of glory? * The Lord of God is the King of glory. (Please stand as able) The Gospel: John 11:32-44 Minister: The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to John. People: Glory to you, Lord Christ. When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. He said, Where have you laid him? They said to him, Lord, come and see. Jesus began to weep. So the Jews said, See how he loved him! But some of them said, Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying? Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. Jesus said, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, Lord, already there is a stench because he has been dead four days. Jesus said to her, Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God? So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upward and said, Father, I thank you for having heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me. When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come out! The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, Unbind him, and let him go. Minister: The Gospel of the Savior. People: Praise to you, Lord Christ. Sermon 4 Bruce Bramlett All are again invited to bring cards, pictures, or other mementos to the Altar of Remembrance.
5 (Please stand as able) Prayers of the People Abba Father, our Divine Mother, we often do not know how to pray in our grief, brokenness, and powerlessness, but the Spirit intercedes for us with sighs too deep for words. In your grace, comfort us and make us whole. May we draw strength to strive for justice, to work for peace, to be instruments of healing in our lives and in the world, including and those we now name silently or aloud In your grace, comfort us and make us whole. So many we love are wracked by pain, in body, mind, or spirit, caretakers who need renewed strength, and all yearning for healing and care, including and those we now name silently or aloud In your grace, comfort us and make us whole. A Reading of the Faithful Departed and Invitation to Remember We remember the Saints whom we have carried within us since childhood; those with whom we speak in the moments of cold and loneliness; and those who give us, by their example, courage to go forth and prevail. We praise those who have made us holy from times past and we proclaim the saints of our own generations. Today we give thanks for those who during the last twelve months have died and entered into your joy, including (we read the necrology below; those who died this past year) and those we now name silently or aloud What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor human heart conceived, God has prepared for those who love God. 6 God of all consolation, in your unending love and mercy, you turn the long night of loss and death into the dawn of new life. Show compassion to your people in their sorrow. Be our refuge and our strength to lift us from the darkness of grief to the peace and light of your presence. Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, by dying for us conquered death, and by rising again restored life. Almighty and eternal God, from whose love in Christ we cannot be parted, either by death or life: hear our prayers and thanksgivings for all we remember and cherish this day; fulfill in us the purpose of your love; and bring us all to your eternal joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Confession of Sin (kneel as you are able) Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. Absolution Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. The Peace (Please offer the Peace to those nearby.) Celebrant: The peace of the Lord be always with you. People: And also with you. Prayer for Healing (kneel as you are able) Those who are unable to get to the altar rail are invited to stay in their places and others around them are invited to raise a hand towards them during the prayer. O God, the source of all health: So fill our hearts with faith in your love, that with calm expectancy we may make room for your power to possess us, and gracefully accept your healing; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Blessing for Celebrations (kneel as you are able) Loving Creator, You are the source of life and the source of love. We thank you for all who celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, and special events today. Watch over them as their days increase, bless and guide them wherever they may be. May your peace which passes understanding abide all the days of their lives, and may your love for the world shine through them and the deep relationships they cherish, through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. Minute for Ministry: Recognition of the Memorial Garden & Memorial Fund Ministry The Liturgy of Holy Communion Offertory Sentence (Please stand as the ushers present the gifts at the altar.) 7 Blessing of Candy Tithe (to be given to Canterbury Bridge Episcopal Ministry, SJSU) Celebrant: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Celebrant: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is truly right, and good and joyful, to give you thanks, all-holy God, source of life and fountain of mercy. You have filled us and all creation with your blessing and fed us with your constant love; you have redeemed us in Jesus Christ and knit us into one body. Through your Spirit you replenish us and call us to fullness of life. Therefore, joining with Angels and Archangels and with the faithful of every generation, we lift our voices with all creation as we say: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory, hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of the universe and giver of life. You formed us in your own image and called us to dwell in your infinite love. You gave the world into our care that we might be your faithful stewards and show forth your bountiful grace. But we failed to honor your image in one another and in ourselves; we would not see your goodness in the world around us; and so we violated your creation, abused one another, and rejected your love. Yet you never ceased to care for us, and prepared the way of salvation for all people. Through Abraham and Sarah you called us into covenant with you. You delivered us from slavery, sustained us in the wilderness, and raised up prophets to renew your promise of salvation. Then, in the fullness of time, you sent your eternal Word, made mortal flesh in Jesus. Born into the human family, and dwelling among us, he revealed your glory. Giving himself freely to death on the cross, he triumphed over evil, opening the way of freedom and life. On the night before he died for us, our Savior Jesus Christ took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his friends, and said: Take, eat: This is my Body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said: Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Remembering his death and resurrection, we now present to you from your creation this bread and this wine. By your Holy Spirit may they be for us the Body and Blood of our Savior Jesus Christ. Grant that we who share these gifts may be filled with the Holy Spirit and live as Christ s Body in the world. Bring us into the everlasting heritage of your daughters and sons, that with St. Jude and all your saints, past, present, and yet to come, we may praise your Name for ever. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be honor, glory, and praise, for ever and ever. Amen. 7
8 As our Savior Christ has taught us, we pray in the language or version of our choice: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.
