Moms rent tables from us and sell children s clothing and other items at a good discount. There will be great deals to be had. The money raised will be used for the Equal Start program that provides backpacks to so many children who can t afford them. This is a BIG event and will help in le ng people know we are here. The Y.E.S. group has been busy planning it and hope for a great turnout. Please invite your friends, neighbors and rela ves. Journey of Faith will be a happening place on June 1st and we hope you ll take part in some way. Journey of Faith Christian Church is a Green Chalice Congregation. Green Chalice is a partnership Creation Care Ministry of Disciple Home Missions and the Christian Church in Kentucky. Our mission is to connect Christian faith, spiritual practice and a creation consciousness in order to demonstrate the fullness of God s shalom.

2 Page 2 The MESSENGER June 2013 A Look at the Brite Side Perhaps this particular column should be called A Look at the Not-So-Brite Side. It s been a time of strange juxtapositions for me. The sudden loss of Mom, surrounded by the accomplishments of my daughters in graduating from a top flight law school and the #1 university in the country (this year, anyway,) has me in a position of both not quite knowing what to feel, and feeling too much. My mother s death was sudden; I will forever be thankful that I talked to her about 3 hours before her fatal attack (even though she took two more days to get around to her life s completion.) At the same time, it was what I would call a good death she really didn t want to stick around this ol earth much longer if there wasn t much enjoyment. So she got her wish, and I celebrate that, even as I mourn the earthly loss. I thank you for your many thoughts and prayers. This circumstance will complicate my life with you a bit further. I will have to be gone a bit more in worship services, moving arrangements for Mom s stuff, and estate settlements. If you see me being a bit foggy from time to time, please chalk it up to this rather than my normal strangeness!! And feel free to call me on it; I ll be honest if stuff gets beyond me. And I know that you as a people of faith already have the understanding to allow me to grieve and be foggy, as well as to celebrate the goodness of life. It s a pleasure to serve with you. I d like to see YOU on Sundays in June!! Probably the most important thing we can all do is talk to everyone you know to see if they would like to volunteer, support financially, or help spread the word of the wonderful services that are available now or will be available. A Service of Ordination into Ministry of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) for our own Jerrolynn Denise Hockenhull-Johnson June 9, 2013 at 4:00 PM United Christian Church W. Chicago Blvd. Detroit, MI Lynn was first challenged some time ago to consider Ordination into Christian ministry by staff and friends at Ashland Theological Seminary where Lynn works. The seminary will be participating and working with us in preparation of the ordination and the reception that will follow. Due to family and friends from the Metro Area and the need for a larger space, United seemed to be the better choice for the location. Lynn's ordination process has included working with Pastor Robert (Bob) Brite, Regional Minister of the Michigan Region, Pastor Eugene James, the Commision on Ministry, and Journey of Faith Christian Church Elders for some time. She has been recommended for ordination into the Christian Church, (DOC).

5 The Green Corner Spring Cleaning- Green Cleaning Iza Hutzler The Magic of Vinegar, Baking Soda and Lemon Lemons: There's a reason why a lot of cleaning supplies have citrus in them: lemons are a natural disinfectant and stain remover because of their acidity. As an added bonus, lemons will leave your house with a pleasant scent. Clean laminate countertops and cutting boards: squeeze lemon juice on them. Rub into the stains and let sit until the stains disappear, then rinse. Lemons inhibit the growth of bacteria. Clean your microwave: slice a lemon, put it in a bowl of water and microwave for 45 seconds. Wipe clean. Keep your fridge smelling nice: simply put half a lemon inside. Prevent/ Remove lime scale on faucets: rub the fixtures with lemon juice and let sit overnight. Rinse in the morning. Clean glass: mix four tablespoons of lemon juice with 1/2 gallon of water. Spray on glass and clean as usual. Polish furniture: mix one teaspoon of lemon juice with one pint of vegetable or mineral oil. Rub onto furniture (tip: try it first on a less visible spot.) Remove rust stains from clothes: Apply lemon juice to the stain, sprinkle with cream of tartar and rub into the fabric. Baking Soda: Baking soda can do more than keep your fridge smelling fresh and aid with baking. Its odor absorbing properties are useful throughout the home and it is capable of removing tough stains because of its abrasiveness. It is completely non-toxic and unlike vinegar, it doesn't have a strong smell. Remove stains from coffee / tea mugs: fill mugs with one part baking soda and two parts water and let sit overnight. Scrub and rinse in the morning. Remove odors from food containers: rinse containers with baking soda and water to remove smells. Let sit overnight if necessary. Remove burnt food from the bottoms of pots and pans: sprinkle baking soda over the burnt areas, add hot water and let sit overnight. Scrub in the morning. Polish silver flatware: make a paste with three parts baking soda, one part water and rub onto the silver with a clean cloth. Rinse with water. Clean spills in the oven: scrub the bottom of the oven with steel wool and baking soda. (Not for self- cleaning ovens) Clean hairbrushes and combs: soak brushes and combs in a baking soda/water solution. Remove odors from upholstered furniture: sprinkle the fabric with baking soda and then vacuum. Erase crayon marks from walls: put a baking soda paste of equal parts soda and water on the area, let dry and then wipe away. (Note: This method works best on white walls; colored walls could lose some of their color.) Clean no-wax and tile floors: to get clean floors without scratching them, mix 1/2 cup baking soda in a bucket of water. Mop the floor and rinse. Deodorize rugs: sprinkle the rug with baking soda, let sit for 15 minutes, and then vacuum. Remove burnt food from a grill: sprinkle the grill with baking soda, and then soak in water for a few hours. Clean lawn furniture: mix 1/4 cup baking soda with one quart of warm water and wipe down furniture. Vinegar: Although the EPA does not list vinegar as a disinfectant, it kills even salmonella and E.coli. Clean your coffeemaker: run the machine with equal parts water and vinegar. Halfway through the cycle, turn it off and let it sit for an hour, then complete the cycle. Unclog a drain: pour 1/2 cup vinegar and 1/2 cup baking soda down the drain. Rinse with water. (Note: this works if the drain is not clogged too badly.) Clean your microwave: put one cup vinegar and one cup water in a bowl and microwave on high for about 10 minutes. Afterward, stains and dried food should be easy to wipe away. Make glasses sparkle: put one cup of vinegar in the bottom of your dishwasher before you run the cycle. After you run the dishwasher, your glassware shouldn't be cloudy. Remove mineral deposits from a showerhead: put vinegar in a plastic bag and tie the bag around the showerhead. Let the bag sit overnight, and rinse the showerhead with water in the morning. Prevent mildew in the shower: spray vinegar on shower walls and curtains. Clean glass: mix one tablespoon of vinegar in a quart of water. Spray onto glass surfaces and wipe dry. Remove mold from walls: spray vinegar on walls, let sit for 15 minutes, rinse and let dry. Clean spills on carpet: after removing as much liquid as you can, spray the stain with a solution of half vinegar and half water and let sit for two minutes. Blot with a towel. Remove stickers: rub labels with vinegar, let sit for 10 minutes, remove. Additional information on Page 5
