The Sacrament is a gift given for sanctification and salvation spoes... The married couple are a permanent reminder for Church what took place on cross. -Pope Francis- Having ed Chapter Two to outline challenges to family life, Amoris Laetitia in a movement characteristic its author n turns towards hope, and especially towards hope that is born in Christ Jes and in Church he founds. But, whereas, for many priests and bishops, a turn towards Church means a restatement doctrine and idealized commands, Pope Francis has already identified such a vision Church as part problem. For Francis, turn to Jes begins not with doctrinal pronouncements and condemnations, but with kerygma i.e., foundational teaching Christian faith that God so loved world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might have eternal life (Jn. 3:16). Even prior to his election as Pope, while Archbishop Buenos Aires, Jorge Bergoglio, Francis had spoken against those who don t pay attention to kerygma but instead move straight to catechism... In doing this, we relegate treasure living Christ, treasure Holy Spirit in our hearts, treasure living a Christian life... to being secondary importance. This kerygmatic foc, present throughout Francis papacy and highlighted in first paragraph Chapter Three, calls reader to place any discsion vocation family within context this message love and tenderness; orwise it becomes nothing more than defense a dry and lifeless doctrine ( 59). For Amoris Laetitia, family is not merely a conventional structure introduced to human society for purposes control or power; rar, it is rooted in our humanity, and in very trinitarian nature God, i.e., in Far s infinite love revealed in Christ, who gave himself up for our sake and who continues to dwell in our midst ( 59). Reecting ascetical heresies early Church, marriage is proclaimed as a fundamental human good; a good which, through incarnation Jes, becomes sacramental revealing in its union spirit and flesh something powerful about God s love, as manifested in humanity Christ. In or words, marriage is not a sacrament in spite its sexual dimension, but becae it. Sex, within communion and permanent commitment marriage, reveals God s own unitive and procreative nature, i.e., love and commitment which is not merely spiritual, but brings forth a world, entails sacrifice on cross, and results in life that is lasting and, itself, moves out to bless ors. Indeed, as Francis explains, becae family is image God, who is a communion persons ( 71), vocation family forms an essential part vocation Church itself; for family is Church, at a domestic level

3 The Church is a family families, constantly enriched by lives all those domestic churches ( 87). Becae marriage and family life are sacramental, i.e., part living revelation God, re exists an essential dialogue between life Church and life family. The experience and revelation found in Church fers guidance for families, but, likewise, Church, in order fully to understand her mystery, looks to Christian family, which manifests her in a real way ( 67). In or words, our understanding gospel (beginning in kerygma) will help better understand how to face challenges family life, t as our understanding marriage and family can help better understand living grace given in Church. Once he has outlined connection between Church and family life, Francis begins to explore what Church fers faithful for ir discernment this vocation. He begins, as ual, with life Christ himself, pointing out many times Jes engages real issues that have to do with families not merely sexual issues so ten addressed in catechetical approaches, but issues friendship and family, parenting and mercy, forgiveness and alienation ( 64). For Francis, immersion Christ into world is an immersion into families, including his own; families who love and forgive, who nurture and lose, who support and stain structure mercy and grace in which Church is born. Quoting Pope Paul VI, he notes: The covenant love and fidelity lived by Holy Family Nazareth illuminates principle which gives shape to every family, and enables it better to face vicissitudes life and history ( 66). Moving beyond Scripture, however, Francis also takes up some more controversial issues in history Church-family dialogue yet addresses m as a pastor first, rar than as a regulator. Th, in speaking about encyclical, Humanae Vitae, Francis avoids reiterating ban on artificial birth control, for which encyclical is most famo, and instead stresses deeper meaning letter: i.e., intrinsic bond between conugal love and generation life ( 68). As is true throughout Amoris Laetitia, emphasis here is on call family, not commands Church a suggestion that Francis is consistent in his earlier admonition that purpose Church is to form consciences, not replace m ( 37). Th, while pointing out that key signs marriage are unity, openness to life, fidelity, indissolubility, and, within Christian marriage, mutual support on path towards complete friendship with Lord ( 78), Francis presents encouragement to families and couples, rar than threats, trting that marriage and family life are blessings towards which people wish to move and not burdens y mt be forced to bear. It is from this attitude pastoral care that Francis fers Church some most revolutionary passages in Amoris Laetitia. While affirming that marriage is a lifelong and exclive union, aimed at well-being spoes and procreation and raising children, Pope also recognizes reality world: that good people cannot or do not always manage to live in ideal situation marriage. Some, for example, do not meet structural discipline Church rightly set out for marriage; yet, we cannot deny that y have some element sacramental union which y and not priest deacon are ministers (see 75). Likewise, ors who have gone through difficult situation divorce and have remarried outside Church s structures, and have attained a noteworthy stability through a public bond ( 78) should not be permanently exiled from life Church. In calling ministers Church to weigh realities particular situations, Pope invites into forefront not a new doctrine but long-held teaching ten obscured by rule-centered clerics: Therefore, while clearly stating Church s teaching, pastors are to avoid udgements that do not take into account complexity vario situations, and y are to be attentive, by necessity, to how people experience and endure distress becae ir condition ( 79). In or words, Francis calls for love, heart kerygma, in matters divorce and remarriage, i.e., calls not for overthrow Church s teaching on indissolubility marriage, but for a pastoral approach that allows individual people to find ir way to altar love and healing. 5 First Reading Acts 2:1-11 When time for Pentecost was fulfilled, y were all in one place toger. And suddenly re came from sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled entire hoe in which y were. Then re appeared to m tongues as fire, which parted and came to rest on each one m. And y were all filled with Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as Spirit enabled m to proclaim. Now re were devout Jews from every nation under heaven staying in Jeralem. At this sound, y gared in a large crowd, but y were confed becae each one heard m speaking in his own language. They were astounded, and in amazement y asked, Are not all se people who are speaking Galileans? Then how does each hear m in his native language? We are Parthians, Medes, and Elamites, inhabitants Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pont and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and districts Libya near Cyrene, as well as travelers from Rome, both Jews and converts to Judaism, Cretans and Arabs, yet we hear m speaking in our own tongues mighty acts God. 6 Second Reading Romans 8:8-17 Brors and sisters: Those who are in flesh cannot please God. But you are not in flesh; on contrary, you are in spirit, if only Spirit God dwells in you. Whoever does not have Spirit Christ does not belong to him. But if Christ is in you, although body is dead becae sin, spirit is alive becae righteoness. If Spirit one who raised Jes from dead dwells in you, one who raised Christ from dead will give life to your mortal bodies also, through his Spirit that dwells in you. Consequently, brors and sisters, we are not debtors to flesh, to live according to flesh. For if you live according to flesh, you will die, but if by Spirit you put to death deeds body, you will live. For those who are led by Spirit God are sons God. For you did not receive a spirit slavery to fall back into fear, but you received a Spirit adoption, through whom we cry, Abba, Far! The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children God, and if children, n heirs, heirs God and oint heirs with Christ, if only we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.
