West Coast Liturgy H o l y E u c h a r i s t Presider: The Ven. Penelope A. Kingham Sunday, September 16, 2018 Welcome We are glad you are with us today as we gather in worship on the traditional lands of the Saanich First Nation peoples. If you are visiting, we would love to speak with you personally over refreshments in the Parish Hall following the service. Page 2

THE COMMUNITY GATHERS BEFORE GOD Processional Hymn (CP #3): Morning Has Broken Morning has broken, like the first morning; blackbird has spoken, like the first bird. Praise for the singing! Praise for the morning! Praise for them springing fresh from the Word! Sweet the rain s new fall, sunlit from heaven, like the first dewfall, on the first grass. Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden, sprung in completeness where his feet pass. Mine is the sunlight! Mine is the morning born of the one light Eden saw play! Praise with elation, praise every morning, God s recreation of the new day! Presider: In this time and place, we gather on the ancestral lands of our Saanich First Nation companions. All: From many places and peoples we come to this house in prayer. Presider: In this time and place, we gather in the name of the living God. All: We meet in the presence of Jesus Christ, risen and alive. Presider: In this time and in this space, we gather with the community of faith around the globe and across the ages. All: In this time and space heaven and earth are one. Presider: In this time and space, we are not alone, but one in Christ. All: Knit together in the unity of the Spirit. Page 3

Presider: In this time and place we come together, Hallowed, expectant, one people in God. All: In the name of the Holy and Blessed One, Creator, Redeemer and Holy Spirit. Amen. GLORIA Gloria, Gloria, Gloria, glory to God on high, Gloria, Gloria, Gloria, glory to God on high, and on earth, peace to God s people, glory to God, and on earth, peace to God s people, glory to God. THE COLLECT OF THE DAY Presider: Almighty God, you call your Church to witness that in Christ we are reconciled to you. Help us so to proclaim the good news of your love, that all who hear it may turn to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. People: Amen THE STORY OF FAITH IS PROCLAIMED Reader: A Reading from the Book of Proverbs Wisdom cries out in the street; in the squares she raises her voice. At the busiest corner she cries out; at the entrance of the city gates she speaks: How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing and fools hate knowledge? Give heed to my reproof; I will pour out my thoughts to you; I will make my words known to you. Because I have called and you refused, have stretched out my hand and no one heeded, and because you have ignored all my counsel and would have none of my reproof, I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when panic strikes you, when panic strikes you like a storm, and your calamity comes like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come Page 4

upon you. Then they will call upon me, but I will not answer; they will seek me diligently, but will not find me. Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the Lord, would have none of my counsel, and despised all my reproof, therefore they shall eat the fruit of their way and be sated with their own devices. For waywardness kills the simple, and the complacency of fools destroys them; but those who listen to me will be secure and will live at ease, without dread of disaster. Reader: Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s people All: Thanks be to God. Psalm 19 Leader: We will say the Psalm responsively, by half-verse. The heavens declare the glory of God,* and the firmament shows his handiwork. One day tells its tale to another,* and one night imparts knowledge to another. Although they have no words or language,* and their voices are not heard, Their sound has gone out into all lands,* and their message to the ends of the world. In the deep has he set a pavilion for the sun;* it comes forth like a bridegroom out of his chamber; it rejoices like a champion to run its course. It goes forth from the uttermost edge of the heavens and runs about to the end of it again;* nothing is hidden from its burning heat. The law of the Lord is perfect and revives the soul;* the testimony of the Lord is sure and gives wisdom to the innocent. Page 5

The statutes of the Lord are just and rejoice the heart;* the commandment of the Lord is clear and gives light to the eyes. The fear of the Lord is clean and endures for ever;* the judgements of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, more than much fine gold,* sweeter far than honey, than honey in the comb. By them also is your servant enlightened,* and in keeping them there is great reward. Who can tell how often he offends?* cleanse me from my secret faults. Above all, keep your servant from presumptuous sins; let them not get dominion over me;* then shall I be whole and sound, and innocent of a great offense. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight,* O Lord, my strength and my redeemer. Reader: A Reading from The Letter of James Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers and sisters, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. For all of us make many mistakes. Anyone who makes no mistakes in speaking is perfect, able to keep the whole body in check with a bridle. If we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we guide their whole bodies. Or look at ships: though they are so large that it takes strong winds to drive them, yet they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great exploits. How great a forest is set ablaze by a small fire! And the tongue is a fire. The tongue is placed among our members as a world of Page 6

iniquity; it stains the whole body, sets on fire the cycle of nature, and is itself set on fire by hell. For every species of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by the human species, but no one can tame the tongue a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse those who are made in the likeness of God. From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this ought not to be so. Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and brackish water? Can a fig tree, my brothers and sisters, yield olives, or a grapevine figs? No more can salt water yield fresh. Reader: Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s people. All: Thanks be to God. Gospel Hymn: Ancient Words (vs. 1-2) Holy words, long preserved, for our walk in this world. They resound with God s own heart, O let the ancient words impart. Words of life, words of hope, give us strength, help us cope. In this world, where er we roam, ancient words will guide us home. Refrain: Ancient words, ever true, changing me and changing you. We have come with open hearts, O let the ancient words impart. Page 7

Reader: God be with you. All: And also with you. Celtic Alleluia: Allelulia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia. Reader: The Good News of Jesus according to Mark Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked his disciples, Who do people say that I am? And they answered him, John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets. He asked them, But who do you say that I am? Peter answered him, You are the Messiah. And he sternly ordered them not to tell anyone about him. Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. He said all this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things. He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? Indeed, what can they give in return for their life? Those who are ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. Reader: The Gospel of Christ Celtic Alleluia: Allelulia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia. Page 8

Gospel Hymn: Ancient Words (vs.3-4) Holy words of our faith, handed down to this age, came to us through sacrifice, O heed the faithful word of Christ. Holy words, long preserved, for our walk in this world. They resound with God s own heart, O let the ancient words impart. Refrain: Ancient words, ever true, changing me and changing you. We have come with open hearts, O let the ancient words impart. Refrain twice through Announcements: Please see page 19 and the back page. Sermon: The Ven. Penelope A. Kingham Choir Anthem RESPONDING TO THE WORD OF GOD All: We believe and trust in God the Father Almighty. We believe and trust in Jesus Christ, his Son. We believe and trust in the Holy Spirit. We believe and trust in the Three in One. [From Creating Uncommon Worship by Richard Giles] Page 9

THE SACRED MEAL IS SHARED Offertory Hymn (CP#435): Take My Life, and Let It Be Prayer over the Gifts Take my life, and let it be consecrated, Lord, to thee; take my moments and my days, let them flow in ceaseless praise. Take my hands, and let them move at the impulse of thy love; take my feet and let them be swift and purposeful for thee. Take my lips, and let them be filled with messages from thee; take my intellect, and use every power as thou shalt choose. Take my will, and make it thine; it shall be no longer mine; take my heart; it is thine own; it shall be thy royal throne. Take my love: my Lord, I pour at thy feet its treasure store; take myself, and I will be ever, only, all for thee. Presider: Holy God, accept all we offer you this day. May we who are reconciled at this table bring wholeness to our broken world. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. All: Amen Page 11

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING Celebrant: The Lord is here. People: God s Spirit is with us. Celebrant: Open your hearts. People: We open to the fullness of God. Celebrant: Feast at the banquet prepared from the foundations of the world. People: We come, O Christ, in thanks and praise. Celebrant: Holy and eternal One, in whom we live and move and have our being, our origin and our fulfillment, we praise and thank you for drawing us to this sacred meal. From the ocean of your primal love, you fashioned the marvel of creation and beauty of human life. All: From this land of towering forests, mist laden coastlines, the rhythms of the tidal seas, storm and stillness, you humble us to affirm the sacred gift of all creation and our stewardship for everything given and received. Glory to you, source of all life! Celebrant: From the earliest days, the peoples of these islands learned their dependence on your provision of salmon and whale, elk and bear, and through song and ceremony, dance and painted cedar, hallowed these sacred relationships with all life. All: Glory to you, source of all life! Celebrant: In Jesus Christ, you came into our world to reveal your glory, reconcile all peoples to yourself and make all things new in him. Now, gathered from many places, with a heart set on the pilgrim way, We bring this bread and wine, Page 12

Celebrant: yearning for the nourishment of your Spirit and the fullness you promise in Jesus. All: Glory to you, source of all life! Celebrant: Joining then with the saints of every time and place from these islands, shaped by surging tides, wind and salt, we raise our thankful voices in songs of unending praise: All: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessèd is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest! Celebrant: Blessed are you, most holy One, in Jesus: who on that night before he died, took bread and gave you thanks. Jesus broke it, gave it to all gathered, and said: Take this and eat it, this is my body which is given for you. Do this and know that I am with you to the end of the age. After supper, he took the cup, gave you thanks, and gave it to them saying: Drink this all of you. This is my blood of the new covenant. Do this, and know I am with you to the end of the age. All: Therefore, God of all creation we lift this Bread of Life, and this Cup of Salvation. Send your Holy Spirit on these gifts, and upon us that we may know Jesus in the breaking of the bread and follow him in lives of selfless service and courageous love. Glory to you, source of all life! Page 13

Celebrant: In the fullness of time reconcile all things in Christ and bring us to that heavenly table where we will feast anew and every tear will be wiped away. Blessing, praise and thanksgiving be to you, O Holy and Eternal One, Creator, Redeemer and Holy Spirit, One God, now and forever. All: Glory to you, source of all life! Alleluia! THE LORD S PRAYER Celebrant: And now, as our Saviour taught us, let us pray: Our Father in heaven, hallow d be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD Celebrant: We break this bread, to share in the body of Christ. All: We, being many, are one body. for we all share in the one bread. Page 14

THE COMMUNION Celebrant: The Gifts of God for the People of God. All: Thanks be to God. All are welcome to share the bread and wine celebrating the gathering of God s beloved children. All: Amen All: Glory to God, whose power working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory to God, from generation to generation, in the church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen BLESSING Closing Hymn (CP #312): Sing a New Song Refrain: Sing a new song unto the Lord; let your song be sung from mountains high. Sing a new song unto the Lord, singing alleluia.
