THE MAIN REASON WE CAME TO GHENT WAS TO SEE THE VAN EYCK ALTARPIECE. IT WAS THE LAST OF THE FOUR MAIN REASONS WE CAME TO NORTHERN EUROPE. SO LET S REVIEW THESE REASONS AND OUR BUCKET LIST LINE ITEMS.. *** REMBRANDT HISTORY AND HIS NIGHT WATCH ***THE GREAT MICHELANGELO WORK OF THE MADONNA AND CHILD (THE ONLY PIECE TO LEAVE ROME IN HIS LIFE TIME) *** THE GHENT ALTARPIECE BY THE VAN EYCK BROTHERS *** THE PETER PAUL RUBENS COMPLEX THIS WILL BE A RED LETTER DAY FOR US BECAUSE ALL FOUR OF OUR REASONS ARE COMPLETED. 15 PAGE
WE WERE ASKED FOR A FEE TO ENTER THE VIEWING ROOM. THE ROOM IS VERY SMALL AND IS ALWAYS VERY CROWDED. NO PHOTOS WERE ALLOWED BECAUSE OF THE PEOPLE AND SILENCE WAS REQUIRED.. 16 PAGE
THE GHENT ALTARPIECE OR THE ADORATION OF THE MYSTIC LAMB IS A VERY LARGE AND COMPLEX 15TH-CENTURY ALTARPIECE IN THE SAINT BAVO CATHEDRAL. IT IS ATTRIBUTED TO THE BROTHERS HUBERT AND JAN VAN EYCK, WHO WERE EARLY FLEMISH PAINTERS. THE ALTARPIECE IS CONSIDERED A MASTERPIECE OF EUROPEAN ART AND ONE OF THE WORLD'S MAJOR TREASURES IN ANOTHER CHAPEL IS AN EXCELLENT COPY WHERE PHOTOS ARE ALLOWED. 17 PAGE
18 PAGE
OUR AIM WAS TO HAVE OUR PHOTOS MADE IN FRONT OF EACH BUCKET LIST LINE ITEM. AS I HAVE WRITTEN BEFORE THIS IS THE LAST OF OUR MAIN LINE ITEMS.. YEA FOR US YES, IT IS A COPY, BUT THAT IS HOW LIFE IS.. THIS ART HAS SEVERAL COPIES.. 19 PAGE
AT THE LEFT IS MARY.. THE MOTHER OF JESUS. THE CENTER IS JESUS - GOD: NOTE THE CROWN, THE KING OF KINGS. TO THE RIGHT IS JOHN THE BAPTIST PRESENTING GOD. 20 PAGE
ADORATION OF THE MYSTIC LAMB 21 PAGE
NOTE THE LAMB IS WOUNDED AS CHRIST WAS. NOTE THAT THE BLOOD OF THE LAMB IS FILLING A CHALICE WHICH WILL REPRESENT THE BLOOD OF CHRIST YET THOUGH WOUNDED, THE LAMB STILL STANDS WHICH IS REPRESENTING THE RESURRECTION OF CHRIST 22 PAGE

THOUGHTS BY DON ALLEN THIS IS A VERY DIFFERENT DISPLAY OF VERY OLD WORKS, BY MOST ALL UNKNOWN ARTISTS I THINK THIS WAS VERY NORMAL FOR MANY OF THE ARTISTS WHO LIVED BETWEEN 1350 AND MOST ALL COULD NOT WRITE THEIR NAME. IF THEY WERE LUCKY, THEY COULD MAKE A CONSISTENT MARK.. HOWEVER THIS MARK MAY NOT BE RECOGNIZED AS SUCH IN A 100 YEARS.. SO MUCH OF THE ART IN THIS EARLY PART OF THE MUSEUM IS BY ANONYMOUS ARTISTS OR THEY WOULD BE CALLED NOW: MASTERS. ST. PETER CRUCI- FIXION 48 PAGE
