3 10 The Calendar Advent Come further up, come further in C.S. Lewis, The Last Battle Advent is a time of preparation. Preparation for the invisible to become visible, for the Word to become our words. A new world began at Bethlehem, placed in the old world. T.S. Eliot reminded us that the Magi saw the Old Dispensation superseded, and yet surrounding them still. It covers much of our lives today. The New Dispensation began in the stable. There was more in that stable than in any other, anywhere. In The Last Battle, as the end of the old Narnia converges on the stable, Lucy says: Yes, in our world too, a stable once had something inside it that was bigger than our whole world. Aslan stands at the door of the stable, welcoming all those who want to recognize him; many we would expect, and many, many others we would not anticipate. They find themselves in the new Narnia, where every rock and flower and blade of grass looked as if it meant more.. It was the Unicorn who summed up what everyone was feeling. I have come home at last! This is my real country! I belong here! The reason why we loved the old Narnia is that it sometimes looked a little like this.... Come further up, come further in. We need not wait for the end of our own world to approach the manger. St John, the great interpreter of the Incarnation, knew where to find Jesus long after He left the disciples. God is love, he wrote in his first letter (4:18), and whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. St John lived the New Dispensation. We may live it too; then the world means more. We cross over at the door of the stable. Come further up, come further in. From the 15 th century: Then leave we all this worldly mirth, And follow we this joyous birth. 4 The Communion All baptized persons are welcome to receive communion. Please do not dip the bread into the wine. If you do not wish to drink from the cup please remain at the altar rail after receiving the bread and place your arms across your chest when the chalice comes to you. The Lay Administrator will pause in front of you to say the words of administration. This shows your respect for the sacrament and solidarity with your fellow Christians. The Lord is not slow about his promise, as some think of slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish, but all to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fire, and the earth and everything that is done on it will be disclosed. Since all these things are to be dissolved in this way, what sort of persons ought you to be in leading lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set ablaze and dissolved, and the elements will melt with fire? But, in accordance with his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness is at home. Therefore, beloved, while you are waiting for these things, strive to be found by him at peace, without spot or blemish; and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation. (2 Peter 3:8-15) The Gospel Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. Thanks be to God. The Holy Gospel is written in the first chapter of the Gospel according to Saint Mark beginning at the 1st verse. Glory be to thee, O Lord. The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. As it is written in the prophet Isaiah, "See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way; the voice of one crying out in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight,'" John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. He proclaimed, "The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." (Mark 1:1-8) The Gospel of Christ. Praise be to thee, O Christ. 9
