4 Song of Praise Surge, illuminare setting: Carl Haywood (b. 1949) Canr Arise, shine, for you light has come, glory of Lord has dawned upon you. For behold, darkness covers l; deep gloom enshrouds peoples. Refrain But over you Lord shall rise, his glory will appear upon you. Nations will stream your light, kings brightness of your dawning. Refrain Your gates will always be open; by day or night y will never be shut. They will call you, The City of Lord, The Zion of Holy One of Israel. Refrain Violence will no more be heard in your l, ruin or destruction within your borders. Your will call your walls, Salvation, all your portals, Praise. The sun will no more be your light by day; by night you will not need brightness of moon. Refrain The Collect of Day Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray. Set us free, O God, from bondage of our sins, give us liberty of that abundant life which you have made known us in your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives reigns with you, in unity of Holy Spirit, one God, now for ever. Amen. The Lesson Isaiah 40:21-1 Lecr A Reading from book of prophet Isaiah. Have you not known? Have you not heard? Has it not been ld you from beginning? Have you not undersod from foundations of earth? It is he who sits above circle of earth, its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out heavens like a curtain, spreads m like a tent live in; who brings princes 4

5 naught, makes rulers of earth as nothing. Scarcely are y planted, scarcely sown, scarcely has ir stem taken root in earth, when he blows upon m, y wir, tempest carries m off like stubble. To whom n will you compare me, or who is my equal? says Holy One. Lift up your eyes on high see: Who created se? He who brings out ir host numbers m, calling m all by name; because he is great in strength, mighty in power, not one is missing. Why do you say, O Jacob, speak, O Israel, My way is hidden from Lord, my right is disregarded by my God? Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is everlasting God, Crear of ends of earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understing is unsearchable. He gives power faint, strengns powerless. Even youths will faint be weary, young will fall exhausted; but those who wait for Lord shall renew ir strength, y shall mount up with wings like eagles, y shall run not be weary, y shall walk not faint. Lecr People The Word of Lord. Thanks be God. The Gradual: Psalm 147:1-12, 21c Laudate Dominum The psalms is read responsively with congregation reading lines marked in bold. Hallelujah! How good it is sing praises our God! how pleasant it is honor him with praise! The Lord rebuilds Jerusalem; he gars exiles of Israel. He heals brokenhearted binds up ir wounds. He counts number of stars calls m all by ir names. Great is our Lord mighty in power; re is no limit his wisdom. The Lord lifts up lowly, but casts wicked ground. Sing Lord with thanksgiving; make music our God upon harp. He covers heavens with clouds prepares rain for earth; He makes grass grow upon mountains green plants serve mankind. He provides food for flocks herds for young ravens when y cry. 5

6 He is not impressed by might of a horse; he has no pleasure in strength of a man; But Lord has pleasure in those who fear him, in those who await his gracious favor. Hallelujah! The Epistle 1 Corinthians 9:16-2 Lecr A Reading from Paul s first letter Church in Corinth. If I proclaim gospel, this gives me no ground for boasting, for an obligation is laid on me, woe me if I do not proclaim gospel! For if I do this of my own will, I have a reward; but if not of my own will, I am entrusted with a commission. What n is my reward? Just this: that in my proclamation I may make gospel free of charge, so as not make full use of my rights in gospel. For though I am free with respect all, I have made myself a slave all, so that I might win more of m. To Jews I became as a Jew, in order win Jews. To those under law I became as one under law (though I myself am not under law) so that I might win those under law. To those outside law I became as one outside law (though I am not free from God s law but am under Christ s law) so that I might win those outside law. To weak I became weak, so that I might win weak. I have become all things all people, that I might by all means save some. I do it all for sake of gospel, so that I may share in its blessings. Lecr People The Word of Lord. Thanks be God. The people st.
