2 1 Fall 2015 St. Kateri s Totem Kateri Tekakwitha (Kah-tuh-ree Tek-uhkwith-uh) ( ) was canonized in October She was the first Native American woman to be declared a saint. Her mother was a Catholic Algonquin, and her father was a Mohawk chief who was not Catholic. Kateri was only four when her parents and brother died from smallpox. She was adopted by her Mohawk uncle. His family and women of the clan took care of Kateri. They all lived in a longhouse, which is exactly what its name implies a long house built with a wooden frame made from tree saplings. It was usually covered with animal hides or tree bark. Jesuit priests, called Blackrobes by the Native Americans, taught the people about Jesus and the Catholic religion. For years, Kateri longed to be baptized, but she knew her uncle would be furious. When she was 18, she asked the Blackrobes to instruct her and to baptize her, which they did. Her uncle was indeed furious, and Kateri was in great danger. The Blackrobes helped her escape. She walked 200 miles to a Catholic Indian village in Canada, where she lived a life of prayer, fasting, and helping others. Because of her good example and life of purity, she is called the Lily of the Mohawks. Her feast day is July 14. A totem is more than a work of art. It tells a story of a person or group, like a tribe or family. After reading about Kateri, decide how her totem would look. Cut out the symbol of each important part of her life. Paste it to the totem in the order it occurred in Kateri s life. 7 1 Holiday Season 2015 Thanksgiving Place Cards Thanksgiving is a time to thank God for all the good things he has given us, especially the people nearest and dearest to us. Make place cards that say thank you. You may want to thank your grandfather for teaching you how to fish. Or, you could thank your big sister for letting you play her video games when you were sick. Print out enough copies of this page to make a place card for everyone who will be at your Thanksgiving table. 11 1 Winter 2016 Grade Yourself This Lent In addition to practicing some form of penance this Lent, like giving up candy or potato chips, think of something positive you will do. If you and your brother or sister fight a lot, resolve to do your part to get along better. If you are sometimes moody, try to have a smile and a positive comment for everyone. Put your resolution in the Ash Wednesday milestone below. (Use a symbol or code if you want it to be a secret.) Then, on the six Sundays of Lent and Holy Saturday, look back at the past week and grade yourself: A, B, C, D, or F. Try to improve your grades as you move through Lent, so on Easter Sunday you will feel like a better person. Then you can really enjoy your treats. 12 2 Winter 2016 Questions Answer Your Questions About Lent Here are 10 questions about Lent. Below are the answers. Put the letter of each answer next to its question. 1. Why do we observe Lent? 2. What does the word Lent mean? 3. Why does Lent have 40 days? 4. Why is the first day of Lent called Ash Wednesday? 5. How is carnival related to Lent? a. It is the day before Ash Wednesday. In the old days many people confessed their sins to a priest just before Lent began. An old word, shrive, meant to grant forgiveness to a sinner. The word for this action became associated with the day before Lent. b. It originally meant to refrain from eating meat or meat products. Catholics 14 years of age or older may not eat meat on Ash Wednesday and on all Fridays in Lent. Many people also refrain, or abstain, from eating treats like candy in Lent. Answers 6. Why is the day before Lent called Pancake Day? 7. What does it mean to fast? 8. What is Shrove Tuesday? 9. What does it mean to abstain? 10. What is Mardi Gras? f. It means Fat Tuesday in French. Some cities in the southern U.S. observe the day with feasting and celebration, which comes to a quick end as the bells toll midnight. The word fat refers to the rich foods that are often consumed before the Lenten fast begins. g. It received this name because the priest places ashes on the foreheads of believers on that day. Ashes remind us of sorrow and repentance, and of our death, when we will return to ashes. c. The word means spring. For Christians this time is like spring in the sense that they are trying to turn their lives around and make new beginnings. d. Jesus fasted in the desert for this length of time before he began his public life, which eventually led to his death and resurrection. During these days of Lent, Christians prepare for the great feast of our salvation through the heroic deeds of Jesus. e. Lent helps us prepare for Jesus death and resurrection. Some people are preparing for their baptism into Jesus new life at this time as well. During Lent, we do penance for our sins through prayer and almsgiving so we can share fully in the joyous new life of Easter. h. It means eating only one full meal a day, with two very light meals and no between-meal snacks. Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to observe this penance on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. i. On this day families would make pancakes to use up all the eggs, milk, and lard foods that Catholics would need to abstain from during Lent. j. In Europe and South America people call the season before Lent carnival. Do you know what a carnivore is? Do you know what a valedictorian is? Put the two words together. The new word means farewell to meat. Note to Parents: More activities at pflaumweeklies.com/seasonal 2016 Pflaum Publishing Group, a division of Bayard, Inc., Dayton, OH.
