1962 Rubrics for the tones used in the Antiphonale Romanum - DRAFT A survey by Jonathan Kadar-Kallen October 30 th, 2016 Abbreviations: AR = Antiphonale Romanum 1949 LU = Liber Usualis 1962 Purpose: To summarize the changes needing to be made to adapt the tones, assigned by the Antiphonale Romanum according to the old system of ranking feasts, to the new system of ranking feasts. That is, changes that are not perceivable from consulting the text of 1962 Roman Breviary, but which are strictly musical. Note about two editions of the Liber Usualis: The all-latin reprint dated 1962 is presumed to be more fully developed than the one with English rubrics available online, dated The evidence is that on p. lxviii. the latter has an explanation of Hymn melodies at the lesser Hours, whereas the former incorporates these, making such an explanation unnecessary. Hymn at Prime ORDINARUM DIVINI OFFICII AR 13: 1. AR 14: 2. Tonus in majoribus Festis. [Ditto for the Hymns at Terce, Sext and None.] Hymn at Compline AR 58: 1. In Feriis et Festis Simplicibus per Annum.
LU: N/A. (Due to the Liber s non-applicability to ferias.) However, the rubric is easily adapted: use the tone on Ferias. A possible version might be as simple as: I Hic tonus servatur in temporibus «per annum» et Septuagesimae pro omnibus feriis, in aliis autem temporibus non adhibetur pro Officiis de Tempore. AR 59: 2. & 3. here are the same as 1. & 2. at Prime, as noted above. [Note: in AR, the doxology of this hymn is changed for Paschal Time, but this is not the case in LU.] The Liber figured that this tone was suppressed. The Marian Antiphons Just to note: there is no prescribed use for the simple tones; as they also seem not to appear in the Vatican Edition AR 1912, it is quite possible that they are not Vatican Edition at all. The Hymn at Prime on Ferias AR 78: Tonus in Feriis per Annum et Festis Simplicibus. Remarks: ditto as was said for the ferial tone of the Hymn at Compline. In Advent PROPRIUM DE TEMPORE
Note: the 1961 Liber says on p. lxviii. no longer the melody of the hymn of Christmas Vespers, but this is expressly left in place in the updated rubric given above. Note the change in terminology, due to the suppression of the Octave of the Epiphany.
Note that this tone is the same as for feasts II class, which is what class this feast is. LU 530: Ad Primam. Hymnus cantatur in tono infrascripto ad Tertiam. [Probably this is also the case in AR.] LU 531: Ad Tertiam. Hymnus. Worth noting: the Hymns for Lent seem to commence with Vespers of the first Sunday. LU 577:
LU 862: Ditto as AR. However, the doxology is not changed for the feast. Corpus Christi
[Which is the tone for feasts I class, which is the class Corpus Christi is.] Feast of the Sacred Heart AR : Sic cantantur et terminantur Hymni ad Completorium et Horas. [The tone given is the same as that of the Lauds Hymn.] LU 966, 969: [The tones given for Compline and Terce are rather those for feasts I class. The doxology is not changed anymore.] PROPRIUM SANCTORUM [I skip over instances of the tone and doxology for Marian feasts, and other such matters which were covered above.] AR 674: There is a proper doxology for use on the Feast of the Seven Sorrows, with the tones as in Passiontide. AR 770: For July 1 st, feast of the Precious Blood: L Ad Completorium et cras ad Horas, etiam infra Oct. SS. Cordis Jesu, Tonus et Doxologia de B. M. V. [July 2 nd is the feast of the Visitation.] AR 805: For August 6 th, the Transfiguration: Ad Completorium et Horas, Hymni cantantur et terminantur sicut Hymnus ad Vesperas. [Which is a proper doxology, but the tune is as on the Ascension.] LU 1585: Hymnus, 235. [I.e. use the tone for feasts II class, since this feast is II class.] AR 842:
For the feast of the Seven Sorrows in September: Ad Completorium et Horas, Hymni cantantur ut in Tempore Passionis, 397, et in fine dicitur : [proper doxology.] LU 1632: Ad Horas minores, hymnus ut in dominica... [I.e. same as for feasts II class, which is what this feast is.] Feast of Christ the King AR : In eodem tono cantantur Hymni ad Primam, Tertiam, Sextam et Nonam. [The tone is as at Pentecost, but with a proper doxology.] LU 1704, 1708: Merely gives the tones for feasts I class, which is what this feast is. Feasts of the B. V. M. COMMUNE SANCTORUM AR [124]: Ad Tertiam. LU 1256: Ad Tertiam. Hymnus ut in dominica, 235. [Probably, the Common of Our Lady is not used on feasts I class, or this assumes that it will be noted on feasts I class to use that tone, e.g. this is done for Dec. 8 th.] TONI COMMUNES Note: The Liber Usualis is less useful here, because it does not deal with ferias. Vs. Deus in adjutorium AR 1*: Tonus festivus.
Mass and Vespers (1957): Solemn Tone. At Vespers of Solemn Feasts, the following Chant may be used : Canta Deo (1963): Has the same rubric as AR, but spelled maiori. Conclusion: AR may have always been intentionally vague. However, Solesmes books with an English translation render quae cum majori solemnitate celebrantur simply as Solemn feasts, which meant doubles of the I and II class (Mass and Vespers, p. 258). The use of the Solemn tone would thus nowadays be: ad lib. on feasts of the I class. The rubric might however have been left as saying quae cum majori solemnitate celebrantur, if this was indeed meant to be a vague phrase. Canta Deo would be evidence in favor of keeping it. For the Festal vs. Ferial tones, there being no longer any simple feasts, the Festal tone would be used at Matins / Lauds / Vespers of Sundays and Feasts (as well as at Terce before Pontifical Mass), with the Ferial tone being used for the other occasions. Solemn tones for the Canticles Benedictus and Magnificat AR 4*: Pro Canticis Magnificat et Benedictus, in singulis Tonis, antiqui utebantur quotidie modulatione solemni, nempe magis ornata, quae secundum usum nunc communiorem, usurpari potest saltem in Festis majoribus, seu primae vel secundae classis. LU 213: Toni solemnes qui... in Festis majoribus I. vel II. classis usurpari possunt. [However, this rubric is the same in previous editions of the Liber, and is thus not updated to the new ranking of feasts: it is still describing the same thing as AR.] Conclusion: if we consider that the tones for e.g. the Hymn at Compline were changed from majoribus Festis to festis I classis, it would seem clear that these tones ought now to have a rubric along the lines of usurpari potest saltem in festis I classis.
Note: saltem is meaning that which still remains or holds good, rather than at least ; i.e. the books don t foresee for example a universal use of these solemn tones. Tones for the Versicle These rubrics should all still hold. Any differences from LU are caused, not by LU having updated rubrics, but rather by the fact the LU is writing from a point of view of only providing for Sundays and Feasts. The more solemn tone is used in quibusdam Festis solemnioribus, but if this is a vague expression, it continues ut notatur propriis locis. A survey of what these proper places were, and were not, might be interesting to undertake to see whether these feasts were selected individually, or merely by rank. Tone for the Readings (e.g. at Matins) AR 41*: Tonus solemnis ad libitum. Potest usurpari pro Lectionibus Matutini in Festis solemnibus. LU 120: As above, but for some reason LU seems always to have said Festis solemnioribus, which is more vague. This is not however an updated rubric. Conclusion: an updated rubric for this ought probably to be Potest usurpari pro Lectionibus Matutini in festis I classis., going with the equivalence of Solemn feasts to modern feasts I class. Tones for the Orations The Festal / Ferial tones run basically the same way as their counterparts for the Vs. Deus in adjutorium. The Ancient tones ad libitum present no change.
Tones for the Vs. Benedicamus Domino AR 59*-62*, LU AR: I. In Festis Solemnibus. LU: I. In festis I classis. AR: II. In Festis Duplicibus. LU: II. In Festis Semiduplicibus in Vigilia Epiph., in Dom. infra Oct. Nativit., Epiphaniae et Corporis Christi, et diebus infra Octavas quae non sunt de B. M. V. (praeter Octavas Paschae, Ascensionis et Pentecostes) LU: III. In festis III classis. AR: IV. In Festis B. Mariae Virginis. In festis B. Mariae Virginis. In Festis Simplicibus. LU: N/A. Also, simple feasts no longer exist, and the other grades of feast are all covered, I-III class, as above. Thus, the most probable solution is likely that this tone has no function currently. Or at the very least, there is no way to determine definitely such a function. AR: In Officio de B. M. V. in Sabbato. LU: N/A. However, this use would still make sense as is, so there is no problem; use it. AR: VII. In Feriis (extra Tempus Paschale.)
LU: N/A. But this use is obviously still good. AR: VIII. In Dominicis Adventus et Quadragesimae. L Pro Tempore Paschali, quando Officium fit de Tempore, V. Benedicámus Dómino notatur propriis locis in Antiphonario. In festo Ascensionis, in Festo Pentecostes et duobus dieb. seq., cantatur ut in Festis solemnibus. [tone is on p. 457.] LU: VI. In dominicis Adventus et Quadragesimae. LU: VII. In dominicis et in feriis temporis paschalis. (Quando Officium fit de tempore.) [These numbers in LU are incidental.]
