Sacrament of Marriage: Parishioners who wish to be married at St. Mary Church are asked to contact the parish office six months prior to setting a date. This will provide time for prayer, preparation and paperwork. Homebound Parishioners: Communion calls are made on Monday mornings to parishioners homes. Call the parish office if you would like a visit from our Eucharistic Minister. 3 Dear Parishioners, The feast of the Epiphany, is traditionally celebrated the 12th day after Christmas, January 5th. The Epiphany unites three events in the life of Christ when His divinity, as it were, shines through His humanity: The adoration of the Magi or the three Kings; the Baptism of Christ in the Jordan; and the first miracle at the wedding feast of Cana. At the Epiphany, the Church looks forward to the majestic coming of Christ when His manifestation as God will be complete. The Gospels of the baptism and the marriage at Cana are read on the Octave Day and the Second Sunday after Epiphany, and later Sunday Masses in the Epiphany season continue to show the divine power of our Lord in some of His amazing miracles. Adoring the Lord, the Magi brought gifts from afar: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The Epiphany inspires us to be like the three kings. We should return to our own homes, workplaces, and schools in a different way, carrying to all those we meet the light of Christ. We are thankful for the gift of Jesus presence. Now go out and bring the gift of Christ to others in your homes, at work, in our community, and in the world. Yours in Christ, Fr. Long Term Planning Update The LTP Committee met on December 8th in the Library. There was a brief discussion regarding what the next step will be after the approval is received. The approval from the Diocese is expected in the beginning of the New Year. The next steps in the process will be communicated at that time. During the time that we are waiting for confirmation to begin the next steps, please prayerfully support our Parish as we prepare for the future. Advent is the time of preparation for the coming of Christ at Christmas. It is also the start of the liturgical year in our Church. This season is the perfect time for all of us as Christian stewards to consider the gifts we have received from God, support our goal, believe in our Parish, and have confidence in the process and our future. In doing so, we act as faithful stewards of the gifts God has given us. If you would like to help us call the parishioners that have not picked up their tickets yet, come by the parish office and help us out. The Annual St. Patrick s Button Contest is in full swing. Entrants must be ages 4th grade to Adult. Entry forms can be found at Spuds, on the website or in the Parish Office. Deadline is January 15. Parishioners, We are asking for your help in nominating a youth from our parish to receive the St. Maria Goretti Youth Distinction Award. The purpose of this award is to recognize adolescents for their outstanding contribution to the life, mission, and ministry provided to their family, parish, school, and community. Who is Eligible: A High School student who actively lives out his/her Catholic faith is eligible to receive this distinction. It is recommended that a parish honor Juniors or Seniors in High School; however, grade or age should not be the sole determinate in selecting those to honored. Please send your nomination in a letter by mail or to Father Gary (gkaiser@evdio.org) by January 20. Only 2 students can be nominated for this award from our parish. Thank you to everyone who filled out a planning-study survey. Over the next few weeks, the Steier Group will prepare recommendations for Bishop Thompson as to how the diocese should proceed with a capital campaign along with its fundraising potential. Once the bishop reviews the report and decides how to proceed, he will communicate the results to all parishioners. 3

St. Mary offers Sunday School for preschool through Kindergarten during the 9:15am Mass in the basement of the Social Hall. Children have fun while learning about God. Bishop Charles C. Thompson will hold a series of listening sessions in early 2016 concerning a Diocesan Pastoral Plan that is in development. Each session will last approximately two hours. The series includes: 6 p.m. CT on Wednesday Jan. 6 at Good Shepherd Parish, Evansville 6 p.m. CT on Monday Jan. 11 at St. Francis of Assisi Parish, Dale 6 p.m. ET on Monday Jan. 18 at St. Francis Xavier Parish, Vincennes 6 p.m. ET on Monday Feb. 1 at St. Joseph Parish, Jasper 6 p.m. CT on Tuesday Feb. 2 at Resurrection Parish, Evansville 6 p.m. ET on Monday Feb. 8 at St. John the Evangelist Parish, Loogootee 6 p.m. CT on Tuesday Feb. 9 at Sts. Rachel s Challenge Coming to GJCS All GJCS students in grades 7-12 will be participating in the Rachel s Challenge presentation on January 13, 2016 in the Jasper High School gymnasium. Rachel s Challenge is based upon the life and writings of Rachel Joy Scott, who was the first victim of the Columbine school shootings in Through her example, Rachel s Challenge strives to positively impact the lives of millions with acts of respect, kindness, and compassion. Rachel s inspiring story provides a simple, yet powerful example of how small acts of kindness and acceptance motivate us to consider our relationships with the people we come in contact with every day. Rachel s story gives us permission to start our own chain reaction of kindness and compassions, which positively affects the climate in our schools and communities. A special Community Event will be held for interested parents and community members on January 13, 2016 beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the JHS gymnasium. All are invited to attend this special event. We have volunteers from the parish who bring Communion to the homebound on Monday morning beginning around 9:00am. If you would like to receive a visit and have someone bring you the Eucharist, call the Parish Office at and we will put you on the schedule. One of our homebound volunteers is stepping down. If you would like to volunteer to visit the homebound and give them communion, please call the parish office. We will put you on the list for every 5th Monday. Call for details. The St. Patrick s Celebration Inc. will be having an Irish Doubles Bowling Tournament on Sunday, January 24, at 1:00pm at Eastown Lanes in Jasper. A team consists of 2 bowlers who alternate bowling in the same frame. Games 1 & 3, bowler #1 throws the first ball and bowler #2 attempts to pick up the spare.
