St. Thérèse of Lisieux DRESS CODE Summer is coming and temperatures are warm, but modesty does not take a vacation, and neither does our dress code. Ladies and girls, please remember Marylike modesty: dresses and skirts must be below the knee, and no sleeveless, cap sleeved, sheer or revealing tops are to be worn in church at any time. Men and boys must wear a coat and tie to Sunday and Holy Day Mass. Our church is kept cool so that you can easily follow this common sense dress code, which reflects the basic rules of Catholic modesty and the reverence and respect that is due to Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. PARENTS: WATCH YER KIDS! Please keep an eye on the little ones who may wander out to the active parking lot, or the top of the grotto, or Some Guardian Angels are working overtime! FR. 3 THE POETRY CORNER MY SONG OF TODAY My life s a jot of time, An hour that comes and goes; My life this moment; now escapes and runs away. To give You while on earth, O God, the love one owes, I ve got only today! I love you, Jesus; You this soul aspires to! I Wish only for today My head on You to law: Come, rule my heart, and smile Upon me in reply This, but just for today! What do I care, O Lord, that darkness may pervade? Tomorrow ah, for that I simply cannot pray!... Oh, make my heart stay pure, enwrap me in Your shade: Tomorrow? Dream of that and wavering I fear I worry and am sad at trouble on its way: But trials do I want, O God, and suff ring here; This I want, for today. I shall behold You soon on that eternal shore, O God, my Pilot! Where I shall my anchor weigh: My little boat, in peace, Guide through the thunder-roar: Lord, let me hide myself Find refuge in your Face, No longer hear the world And all its idle bray. Ah! give to me your Love, Stay by me with your Grace The nearness of your Heart forgetfulness ensured: No more the Enemy can frighten or dismay. O Jesus, grant a place inside that Heart of yours: O touching Mystery! O bread of Heaven s height! O Living Bread, of Love s bestowal! come, I pray Come, Jesus; live within my heart, O Host of white! O deign that You, the Vine I ll stay united to: For You, this feeble branch will all its fruit display; Then, harvest-grapes of gold I can be off ring You, Lord from when? From today! This harvest-gift of love with souls for grapes must be Made up in just a day, this day that flies away: A true Apostle s fire, O Jesus, give to me! O Spotless Virgin, you re the star by which I sail. You light up Jesus; you unite me with Him. May I rest, O Mother, in the safety of your veil: My Guardian Angel, come enfold me in your wing, Behold me, gentle friend light up for me the way. I call on you for help, direct my journeying! I want to see my Lord unveiled, uncloudedly; But, far from Him I pine, in exile. So I say: Oh, that You will not hide your lovely Face from me! I soon shall fly to You, to praise You, my Desire When day without an end sheds on my soul its ray, I shall be singing to the Holy Angels lyre That Eternal Today! St. Thérèse of Lisieux June 1, 1894 (feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus) This poem was written in honor of the Sacred Heart as a feast-day gift for Thérèse s sister, Marie (Sr. Marie of the Sacred Heart). ADOPT-A-PRIEST Remember, it s easy to adopt a priest. Choose a Father from our ongoing list of candidates, and make it a point to remember him in your daily prayers, at Mass, or when offering your Rosary. This week we are thinking of Los Padres south of the border: Fr. Roberto Mardones Fr. Hernan Monroy Fr. Arnodo Villegas Fr. Martin Gomez Fr. Julian Espina Fr. Pio Espina (his tenth anniversary is this Friday) Fr. Ariel Damin (& his little missionary congregation in Argentina) Bishop Morello and his priests (also in Argentina) A Prayer for Priests Sanctify to Thyself, O my Lord, the hearts of Thy priests, that by the merits of Thy sacred humanity, they may become living images of Thee, children of Mary, and full of the fire of the Holy Ghost, that they may guard Thy house, and defend Thy glory, and that through their ministry the fact of the earth may be renewed, and they may save those souls which have cost Thee all Thy blood. Amen. Eucharistic Heart of Jesus, model of the priestly heart, have mercy on us. (300 days indulgence, each time. Pius X, Sept. 10, 1907)

4 DO AS MOTHER SAYS Fatima Rosary Procession for Peace Thursday, June 13, :15 PM Join us on St. Anthony s Day for our second Fatima Rosary Procession of Reparation, praying for peace, on Thursday, June 13th at 7:15 PM. Come first for Holy Mass at 5:45 PM, or come straight to the procession starting point after dinner. The processions are held on the 13th of each month from May through October, in honor of Our Lady of Fatima, and in accordance with Her requests. Show your love for Our Lady, your Queen and Mother, and join us! We meet just a short drive from St. Gertrude s, at Union Centre Blvd. & Floer Drive in the parking lot in front of the First Watch / Jimmy John s restaurants. The Rosary Procession will commence promptly at 7:15 PM. (In the event of rain, the Rosary will be recited in church.) I wish you to come here on the 13th...to pray the Rosary each day... Our Lady of Fatima, June 13, 1917 Sponsored by the Rosary Confraternity of St. Gertrude the Great Church ANSWERING THE CALL 2013 Tis funny how quickly May seems to come around each year And before we know it the thirteenth day is here And our hearts and our minds turn to our dearest Mother above As we answer her call to us to come show our love For her and Holy Mother Church by meeting to publicly pray Her Rosary in a procession of reparation and for peace and other needs of the day. The weather was perfect, the turnout was great Clergy and laity on a mid-spring date With Our Lady of Fatima as per her request Showing our tremendous love for our Mother by giving her our best And for those who weren t there here s something for you to think over: We ll be meeting again on the thirteenth day of June, July, August, September and October! John Seyfried 5/13/13 O most beautiful Mary, O most amiable Mary, you have gained the Heart of God; take also my poor heart, and make me a saint. St. Alphonsus Liguori The Most Holy Virgin in these last times in which we live has given a new efficacy to the recitation of the Rosary to such an extent that there is no problem, no matter how difficult it is, whether temporal or spiritual, in the personal life of each one of us, of our families or even in the life of peoples and nations, that cannot be solved by the Rosary. There is no problem I tell you, no matter how difficult it is, that we cannot resolve by the prayer of the Holy Rosary...With the Holy Rosary, we will save ourselves, we will sanctify ourselves, we will console Our Lord and obtain the salvation of many souls. Sister Lucy of Fatima

5 THE SACRED HEART: LITTLE THOUGHTS FROM THE LITTLE FLOWER I do not see the Sacred Heart as others do. I think that my Spouse s Heart is mine alone as mine is His alone, and I speak to Him in the solitude of this delightful heartto-heart exchange, waiting for the day when I will contemplate Him face to face. We can understand that St. Thérèse favored those pictures whose inscriptions explicitly affirmed that the Heart of Jesus is our refuge, the hollow of the rock where we can remain forever, to savor there the infinite tenderness of God. JOAN IN HEAVEN: THE CANTICLE OF TRIUMPH The Saints address Joan: This crown is yours, and for eternity: This Martyr s-palm is yours, as well: and now we bring The throne we have prepared, resplendent. It will be Near to the King. Ah, in the heavens here, pure singing-dove, remain For ever you ve escaped the hungers and the snare. You ll find the little brook that murmurs on the plain: Wide meadows, and the flowers there. Then, dove, take wing: on pinions of white, Each high and golden star you can be visiting! To Heav n s aethereal vaults unending, rise in flight O dove, take wing! O Brother, how little known is the Merciful Love of the Heart of Jesus! It is true that to enjoy that treasure we must humble ourselves, must confess our nothingness; and here is where many a soul draws back. St. Thérèse gathers in every single action and incident in human life, and claims it for Our Lord. Jesus tells us that the smallest actions done for His love are those which charm His Heart. If it were necessary to do great things, we should be deserving of pity, but we are fortunate indeed, since Jesus lets Himself be led captive by the smallest action. Jesus can do all; confidence works miracles. No enemies now, Joan No prison dark is yours. The Seraph, as he shines, knows you as sister fair! See what your Love and Lord to you, His spouse, assures You, ever, on His Heart He ll bear. Joan: Ah, He is mine!...sweet, that, beyond compare. All Heaven now is mine! The Saints: All Heaven thine, we sing! Joan: All! Mary, angels, saints and God Himself! I m heir To Everything! St. Thérèse (Pauline s retouching has the throne prepared by the Saints; Thérèse s wording had it prepared by the Lord of Hosts Himself.) Since it has been given to me to understand the love of the Heart of Jesus, I confess that all fear has been driven from me. The remembrance of my faults humbles me and helps me never to rely upon my own strength which is mere weakness. Still more does that remembrance speak to me of mercy and love. When with childlike confidence we cast our faults into Love s all-devouring furnace, how can they fail to be utterly consumed? Now perhaps we understand more easily one of the expressions of Thérèse s intimate audacity with Our Lord. I confide in Jesus, she says, I relate to Him in detail my infidelities, thinking in my daring abandonment to acquire in this way more power over His Heart and to win more fully the love of Him who is not come to call the just, but sinners to repentance. Thérèse wanted to lose herself in the Heart of Jesus just as she wanted to hide herself in the mystery of His Holy Face. She often meditated on the verse of the Canticles in which the bridegroom invites his beloved his dove to come curl up against him. In her second play on Joan of Arc, she put these words in the mouth of Our Lord, when He welcomes into His kingdom the young martyr who has just died on the stake whispering His name. For Thérèse, the Heart of Jesus was also the fire of love, alone capable of consuming all our sins. I choose for my purgatory Your burning love, O heart of my God! My exiled soul leaving this life Would like to make an act of pure love And then flying to heaven, its homeland, Enter into Your heart straightaway.

6 THE BISHOP S CORNER Last Sunday s dry, cool and sunny skies took us all by surprise. Beaten down by weeks of bad weather (but spared others tornadoes) I only thought to say a little prayer for good weather early on Sunday morning. No one thought to clean the grotto, and Katie had already started a little altar in our charming new cloisters, which Mark and Brendan did remember to clean on Saturday. But suddenly, as with a well-coordinated ceremony or a well-sung Mass, everything came together quickly and beautifully, just the way Katie decorated the Lourdes Grotto for our reposoir and outdoor Benediction. The above words describe our splendid Solemnity of Corpus Christi Mass before the Blessed Sacrament Exposed, and the solemn First Communions, twelve for the apostles, which were its high point. The church was full, as we welcomed proud relatives and friends for the First Communions. It seemed that everyone did something. The children cast rose petals. The Rosary Confraternity was represented. Four men proudly carried the canopy. The people processed. The bells rung. The Masters of Ceremony mastered the ceremony. We all marched through our new cloister, chants echoing in its open spaces. A final Benediction reluctantly dismissed the multitudes, as it was time for the 11:30. Adoration continued. Time for a group photo, and then the next sermon. Fr. Lehtoranta did the quiet, essential work of confessor over in the corner, behind the scenes, and a brave Fr. McKenna (he is our groundhog and skunk hunter, after all) assisted me at the altar and grotto, and did not fall into the water. Our fine June days are continuing as I compose this Corner, as we meet daily at the altar to sing the Mass of Corpus Christi and receive Our Lord s Benediction while He receives our adoration. Rare, blessed, beautiful days. On Sunday I asked for prayers to find Doris Jeanne Campbell. Susan Brown, who lives in Muncie, Indiana and used to come to St. Gertrude, saw the appeal, and immediately went to Indianapolis to track her down. On Monday she sent a little report with Doris Jeanne s address. I am so grateful for this quickly answered prayer, this deed of charity. Grateful thoughts go this morning as well to our persevering principal and teachers at our little school, as we proudly graduate four eighth-graders whose excellent training and formation belie their young years. Such good is done by our school! Join us in proudly supporting it, as do our parents and students. The students enjoyed an end of year outing at the Newport Aquarium last Thursday, thanks to a generous benefactor. The seminary school we support in Florida is in its last weeks. Fr. Cekada is visiting Most Holy Trinity Seminary for his final teaching tour of the school year. He is a busy man, moving from finances to theology to music over the course of a week. The other day he edified me with a quote from his favorite poet, T.S. Eliott: The lot of man is ceaseless labour, or ceaseless idleness, which is still harder How true! Our renvoi for the summer: stay busy even in rest. Do good and be good. Leave if you must, and come back not enervated and compromised, but rested and refreshed. Take Jesus and Mary with you. Pray and read daily. Remember you are a tabernacle. Long for your next Holy Communion. Be an apostle in some way, be it only by your modesty, your smile and promised prayers. Fr. Lehtoranta leaves tomorrow for a long delayed home visit to what is almost the land of the midnight sun. We wish him a good trip to Finland and pray for apostolic possibilities in Scandinavia. Father will go to visit our celebrated and international newlyweds, Hervé and Cecilia, to bring them Holy Mass this month. Let us keep together, in loving gratitude for another year at St. Gertrude the Great, this month of the Sacred Heart. Don t let the Friday evening Sacred Heart devotions die out. We lost our one congregant for Vespers, and are modestly advertising for one just one as a replacement. May you all find your place in the loving Heart of our Saviour. Bishop Dolan Let us never cease praying during the solemnities for which the Church prepares us, so as to progress in the ways of the Lord, and, as the temporal years pass by, let us prepare ourselves for eternity. Bl. Gaspar del Bufalo

I offer Thee all my actions of this day for the intentions and for the glory of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. I desire to sanctify every beat of my heart, my every thought, my simplest works, by uniting them to His infinite merits; and I wish to make reparation for my sins by casting them into the furnace of His merciful love. O my God! I ask of Thee for myself and for those dear to me the grace to fulfill perfectly Thy holy will, to accept for love of Thee the joys and sorrows of this passing life, so that we may one day be united together in Heaven for all eternity. Amen. PRAYER OF PETITION TO ST. ANTHONY O wondrous Saint Anthony, glorious by reason of the fame of thy miracles, who hadst the happiness of receiving within thine arms our blessed Lord under the guise of a little child, obtain for me of His bounty this favor that I desire from the bottom of my heart. Thou who wast so gracious unto poor sinners, regard not the lack of merit on the part of him who calls upon thee, but consider the glory of God, which will be exalted once more through thee, to the salvation of my soul and the granting of the petition that I now make. As a pledge of my gratitude, I beg thee to accept my promise to live henceforth more agreeably to the teachings of the Gospel, and to be devoted to the service of the poor whom thou didst ever love and still doest love so greatly; bless this my resolution and obtain for me the grace to be faithful thereto even until death. Amen. (An indulgence of 300 days, once a day; plenary once a monoth, on the usual conditions, for the daily recitation of this prayer.) 4:45 PM Vespers and Benediction 5:45 PM Low Mass For the People of St. Gertrude the Great
