CHRIST CHAPEL 800 West College Avenue St. Peter, Minnesota S ECOND S U N D A Y A F T E R EPIPHANY S UNDAY, 16 JANUARY 2011 S E R V I C E O F HOLY C O M M U N I O N AM A L L A R E WELCOME! C H R I S T CHAPEL S TAFF CHAPLAINS Brian Johnson Rachel Larson ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT Kathy Chalhoub Welcome to worship at Christ Chapel, a place where we all are one at Wisdom s holy feast. This phrase, our worship theme for the academic year, is a fitting counterpart to the campus-wide focus on food. To the questions raised by the Gustavus Global Insight and the Nobel Conference theme, Making Food Good, we add a theological and liturgical dimension: what gifts do we bring to the table, how might we best serve our neighbor with them, and how is wisdom acquired and enhanced? Martin Luther, in Table Talk and other writings, extols the virtues of wisdom and reminds us of its dangers by those who would use it for false pretense. As we gather around our holy table throughout the year, we will study the examples of individuals whose lives were situated at the intersection of the Church and the Academy: what do Martin Luther, George Herbert, Saint Patrick, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Catherine of Siena, Julian of Norwich, and others teach us about wisdom? How can our sense of vocation be nurtured by their examples? What makes this feast good? SEXTON Barbara Bjelland CANTOR Chad Fothergill ASSOCIATE ORGANIST Chad Winterfeldt SACRISTANS Justin Anderson Andrew Griesman Sam Marten Rebecca Rasp Adam Snyder HOSPITALITY MINISTERS Laura Harlestad Susan Kranz Peter Michaletz Brendan Nadeau Julie Tumbarello A B O U T O U R ORDER OF SERVICE The order of this morning s service is printed in this bulletin. Hymns and other portions of the service that are not printed here can be found in Evangelical Lutheran Worship (ELW), the cranberry-colored hymnal in the pew rack. Numbers preceded by the designation p. refer to page numbers at the front of the hymnal (which are printed at the bottom of each page) while numbers preceded by ELW refer to hymn numbers (which are printed at the top of each page next to the hymn title). T H E M E S I N TODAY S S E R V I C E: SEEING AND TELLING WHO J ESUS I S The time after Epiphany is the church's time to invite us to come and see who this one born in a manger will be, and to discover what this one born to a young woman might mean for us and for the world. Today's gospel tells us that Jesus is the "Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world," "the Son of God," and "the Messiah." These appellations show us that the coming of Jesus has meaning not just for those who follow him, but for all people and all the world. In the gospel, neither John nor Andrew can contain their testimony about who Jesus is. They have had an encounter with Christ that has had such an impact on their lives that they cannot help but tell others about it. John tells his disciples and everyone else within earshot about Jesus. Andrew runs to find his brother, Peter, and brings him to Jesus so that Peter might have the same life-changing encounter he himself has experienced. We are invited to "come and see" who Jesus is. We are reminded that God's forgiveness and love proclaimed in Jesus Christ is meant to be good news for us and for all people. Like John and Andrew in today's gospel, we are called to share with others who we have seen Jesus to be. 2 WELCOME THANKSGIVING FOR BAPTISM The assembly stands. All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins In the Thanksgiving for Baptism, the assembly recalls how God has joined us to Christ through baptism and so clothed us with mercy and forgiveness. We are being clothed anew in this garment as the Holy Spirit draws us together. Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, the fountain of living water, the rock who gave us birth, our light and our salvation. The presiding minister addresses the assembly Joined to Christ in the waters of baptism, we are clothed with God's mercy and forgiveness. Let us give thanks for the gift of baptism. Water may be poured into the font as the presiding minister gives thanks We give you thanks, O God, for in the beginning your Spirit moved over the waters and by your Word you created the world, calling forth life in which you took delight. Through the waters of the flood you delivered Noah and his family. Through the sea you led your people Israel from slavery into freedom. At the river your Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Holy Spirit. By water and your Word you claim us as daughters and sons, making us heirs of your promise and servants of all. We praise you for the gift of water that sustains life, and above all we praise you for the gift of new life in Jesus Christ. Shower us with your Spirit, and renew our lives with your forgiveness, grace, and love. To you be given honor and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever. GATHERING HYMN Jesus, Come! For We Invite You ELW 312 UNION SEMINARY GREETING The grace of God in Christ Jesus, poured out in every gift of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. And also with you. 2 S E C O N D S U N D A Y A F T E R E P I P H A N Y

WORD Spoken in about 550 B.C.E. to inspire hope among the Israelite exiles, this second Servant Song proclaimed that God had called Israel and Jacob, not only one day to return to their land, but to be God's servant to bring light and salvation to the whole world. FIRST READING Isaiah 49:1 7 Holy Wisdom, Holy Word. Thanks be to God. PSALM 40:1 11 The cantor will introduce the Antiphon, and the assembly is invited to sing the Antiphon where indicated. The cantor will sing psalm verses. A N T I P H O N Antiphon 1 I waited patiently up- on the LORD, who stooped to me and heard my cry. 2 The LORD lifted me out of the desolate pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a high cliff, making my footing sure. 3 The LORD put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God; many shall see, and stand in awe, and put their trust in the LORD. 4 Happy are they who trust in the LORD! They do not turn to enemies or to those who follow lies. Antiphon 5 Great are the wonders you have done, O LORD my God! In your plans for us, none can be com- pared with you! Oh, that I could make them known and tell them! But they are more than I can count. 6 Sacrifice and offering you do not desire; you have opened my ears: burnt-offering and sin-offering you have not required. Antiphon 7 And so I said, "Here I am; I come. In the scroll of the book it is writ- ten of me: 8 'I love to do your will, O my God; your law is deep within me.'" 9 I proclaimed righteousness in the great assembly; I have not restrained my lips, O LORD, you know. 10 I have not hidden your righteousness in my heart; I have spoken of your faithfulness and your deliverance; I have not concealed your steadfast love and truth from the great assembly. 11 You are the LORD; do not withhold your compas- sion from me; may your steadfast love and your truth continually keep me safe. Paul wrote his first letter to the Corinthians in about 54 C.E., in part, to address various situations in the Christian community that he believed needed correction. Corinth, Greece, was an important cultural and economic city in the Greco-Roman world. The letter develops the standard form of salutation into a full description of the meaning of the church. Paul's subsequent words of instruction are meant to strengthen the community as it awaits the imminent return of Christ. Antiphon SECOND READING 1 Corinthians 1:1 9 Holy Wisdom, Holy Word. Thanks be to God. S E C O N D S U N D A Y A F T E R E P I P H A N Y 5

The Gospel Acclamation is the assembly s opportunity to rejoice for the great gift of God s word; our loud shout of Alleluia is an anticipation of the Gospel reading to come and a response to the word that we have already heard. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION We stand to welcome the Gospel After the prologue of John's gospel that proclaimed Jesus as the Word of God from before creation, the light of the world, and the only Son of God, comes John's accounts of Jesus' baptism and the subsequent call of the disciples. John used the narrative of the calls to present the identity of Jesus, as more of his titles are proclaimed: the Lamb of God, rabbi, and Messiah. GOSPEL John 1:29 42 The Holy Gospel, according to John, the first chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. The appointed Gospel is read The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. SERMON Chaplain Rachel Larson Silence for reflection follows HYMN OF THE DAY Come, Beloved of the Maker ELW 306 JILL PRAYERS As God's beloved children, let us pray that the light of Christ shine on the nations, the church, and all those in need. A brief silence Following each petition, the assisting minister will say let us pray, to which the assembly responds: Have mercy, O God. PEACE The peace of Christ be with you all. And also with you. MEAL We gather gifts for those in need and for the church s mission. This morning s offering will be gathered near the baptismal font at the conclusion of the service. Please consider a generous gift to assist with worldwide disaster relief. GATHERING OF THE GIFTS VOLUNTARY 6 S E C O N D S U N D A Y A F T E R E P I P H A N Y

OFFERING PRAYER Let us pray. Merciful God, as grains of wheat scattered upon the hills were gathered together to become one bread, so let your church be gathered together from the ends of the earth into your kingdom, for yours is the glory through Jesus Christ, now and forever. GREAT THANKSGIVING It is our duty and delight that we should everywhere and always offer thanks and praise to you, O God, through Jesus Christ, who is your light made manifest to all the nations, and so with the church on earth, all creation, and the host of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: SANCTUS Holy! Holy! Holy! We sing the song of the seraphim, those wondrous beings that Isaiah sees surrounding the throne of God Almighty. We joyfully add our voices to their heavenly song. 8 EUCHARISTIC PRAYER The Eucharistic Prayer is a continuation of the thanksgiving at the table and proclaims what God has done in creation and redemption, summarized by Jesus words at the Last Supper. Holy God, you alone are holy, you alone are God. The universe declares your praise: beyond the stars; beneath the sea; within each cell; with every breath. We praise you, O God. Generations bless your faithfulness: through the water; by night and day; across the wilderness; out of exile; into the future. We bless you, O God. We give you thanks for your dear Son: at the heart of human life; near to those who suffer; beside the sinner; among the poor; with us now. We thank you, O God. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Remembering his love for us on the way, at the table, and to the end, we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. We pray for the gift of your Spirit: in our gathering; within this meal; among your people; throughout the world. Blessing, praise, and thanks to you, holy God, through Christ Jesus, by your Spirit, in your church, without end. 8 S E C O N D S U N D A Y A F T E R E P I P H A N Y

LORD S PRAYER Gathered into one, let us pray as Jesus taught, saying: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. INVITATION TO COMMUNION Come to the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. AGNUS DEI All are invited to receive these gifts of God. Grape juice and gluten-free bread are available upon request. DISTRIBUTION S E C O N D S U N D A Y A F T E R E P I P H A N Y 9

BLESSING The body and blood of our Savior Jesus Christ strengthen and keep you in God s grace. PRAYER Let us pray. Ever-faithful God, you have taken us again into your arms and nourished us as your dear children. Lead us and guide us, that we may share our bread and your healing light with those who hunger and thirst, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. SENDING Sending also reminds us whose actions determine our worship. This is not Going, which we would do, but Sending, which God does. God sends us forth from this place to live our vocation in the world. We respond with gratitude and acknowledgement that we are sent: Thanks be to God! SENDING HYMN Will You Come and Follow Me ELW 798 KELVINGROVE BLESSING God the Father, the Majestic Glory; God the Son, the Morning Star; and God the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, bless you and + grant you peace.
