1 Dove Tales The Newsletter of Emmanuel Episcopal Church June 2015 Being in Christian Community Being in Christian Community means that I am part of something larger than myself, that I am not alone in the world, that I get to receive the gifts I do not posses but others have to give, and that I get to offer something to others that they would not otherwise have. It is amazing what we have to give each other and how much we are able to enrich each other s lives through being together. I am deeply grateful for the community of the Emmanuel family: for the joy of reaching out to the world together in Christ s name and for the reassurance of life lived together. There have been some recent moments that have focused my attention on the richness of our life together at Emmanuel. Anyone who attended the Celebration of our Ministry Together on April 26 noticed the great energy and vitality of this event. We came together as a parish family, led enthusiastically by our senior warden, Betty Milligan, and the vestry. They shared the work of preparing the parish hall for our big party following the service, and they tell me that no one person had to work too terribly hard. I m not sure if that is true because it looked like a lot of work, but it seems no one felt overburdened by it and enjoyed sharing the effort. The result was an incredible celebration: great food, wonderful music, festive decorations, and joyful togetherness! Another moment that caught my attention happened this past weekend at Shrine Mont during our parish retreat. Maybe there is something about being away from home, or maybe there is something about being in the beautiful mountain setting of Shrine Mont, or maybe the Holy Spirit is insisting on moving us. Whatever the reason, when we had informal evening prayers on Saturday night on the porch and I invited the group to offer their own prayers, I heard prayers coming forth like a rushing river. We prayed for those who have died, for the people we love, and for the concerns of our hearts. I was moved to hear everyone s prayers and felt I was tugged a little deeper into God s heart through them. Later that night, as the evening was wearing on, and many had gone to bed, a few remained on the porch, and someone spontaneously started a candid conversation about faith and what we believe and what we doubt and what we struggle with. People from age twelve to over seventy spoke freely about what matters most to them. Again, this was a profound experience of Christian Community and of deep sharing. For us Christians, life together can have its difficult moments, but this is nothing compared to the joy being a part of something that is so much larger and more beautiful than ourselves alone. 2 Page 2 Dove Tales Bishop Gulick will visit Emmanuel on June 7 The Rt. Rev. Edwin F. "Ted" Gulick, Jr. will visit Emmanuel on Sunday, June 7. All are invited to join us as at 10 a.m. as Bishop Gulick will officiate a service of Holy Eucharist, Rite II. In honor of the Bishop s visit, there will be no service of Holy Eucharist, Rite I at 8 a.m. that day. Following the 10 a.m. service, everyone is invited to a reception in the Parish Hall honoring the Bishop and our newly confirmed and reaffirmed members. Children & Youth Children on Sundays Sunday offerings for Children include Nursery care and Children s Chapel every Sunday. Learn and Play (K-8) is from 11:30 1:30 each Sunday and will continue through the summer. Children s Christian Formation will return in the fall. Episcopal Youth Community (EYC) All youth are invited to an EYC campfire at the home of the Fergusons on Sunday, June 14 at 5:30 p.m. Contact Ginny Ferguson at ginnyferg@yahoo.com for more information. Family-friendly Service A family-friendly service will be held on Sunday, June 14 at 11:30 a.m. All are welcome to participate. This will be a simplified and brief service designed to be child and youth friendly. Wednesday Night Food Truck Court The Wednesday Night Food Truck Court is here all summer! Every Wednesday through August 26, food trucks will be at Emmanuel from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. There will be games and a Bible lesson for children from 6:30 to 7:30. Vendors from Grow RVA will also be here. If you know of any vendors who might like to participate, please contact Linda Duke at Please spread the word and invite all your friends and neighbors for great food and fellowship! Mustard Seed Grant We are pleased to announce that Emmanuel Church has received a Mustard Seed Fund Grant from the Diocese of Virginia in the amount of $2,585. This grant will be used to support the FOOD Faith Community Garden Project. Special thanks to Ginny Ferguson and all who helped her submit our grant request. PrimeTimers Primetimers has a reservation for lunch and the play "Sister Act" on Wednesday, October 7, in Fredericksburg, VA. We will leave from Emmanuel at 11:15 and return around 4:30. The cost is $54.00 per person and we plan to carpool. A sign-up sheet will be on the back table and please indicate if you are willing to drive. From the Parish Office The Spring UTO Ingathering held on May 17 received $ from 23 contributors. Through United Thank Offering, men, women and children nurture the habit of giving daily thanks to God. The Parish Office will be closed on June 12, 15 and 17. Included in the print issue of this Dove Tales is a contribution envelope for the Virginia Episcopalian.

3 June 2015 Page 3 June is a mission-filled month for Emmanuel Habitat for Humanity Saturday, June 13 is our build with Hanover Habitat for Humanity (HHH). Contact Ginny Ferguson at ginnyferg@yahoo.com if you would like to participate. We hope you have had a chance to sign a 2 x 4 at church to go into one of the homes being built by Habitat. The money raised in the What Would You Build? Campaign will be our financial support for HHH. CARITAS We will assist with CARITAS at St. Paul s Catholic Church on June 16 and 18. Field Of Our Dreams (FOOD) Faith Garden Children from next door helped plant the marigolds and zinnias that they started from seed last month. We all look forward to seeing the color around the fence. The gate is finished, so now the garden should be safe from rabbits. We all look forward to our first harvest. The food gathered from the Children s Garden will be enjoyed by the children and their families. The Give Away Garden produce will be donated to those in need. LAMB s Basket With the end of the school year, LAMB's Basket expects increased requests for kidfriendly meals, especially canned meats such as tuna, and peanut butter and jelly. Please keep these items in mind as you shop. Emmanuel's volunteer days this month are June 4 and 18. Serving our schools This past school year, tutoring was offered at Emmanuel for Lakeside Elementary students. Bea Dalton, Ellen Giles, Ellen Coates, Dick & Barbara Brewer, Martha Duguid, Janet Gagnon, Amy Clifford and Sara-Scott Wingo participated. Volunteering at JEB Stuart Elementary were Mary Jo Wigglesworth, Dick Brewer and Dale Revell. We need your recipes You will not want to miss having your favorite recipes included in the new Emmanuel Episcopal Church cookbook. The color cookbook will be professionally published and in a 3-ring binder with a picture of Emmanuel on the hard cover. This will be a keepsake cookbook! Submit your recipes now by a) making a copy of your recipe card, b) handwriting your recipe, c) ing your recipe to June Chandler at chandlersjj@comcast.net, or d) writing your recipes on the form found at the back of the church. The deadline is June 1 (there is a basket in the back of the church for submissions). Don t forget to ask your family members to share their best recipes, too! Marilyn Malone, Outreach Commission Chair May Vestry highlights Through a bequest from Waddy Francisco, we will fund a contemplative Eucharist on Sunday nights for six months starting in September. The Food Trucks and GrowRVA will be at Emmanuel on Wednesday nights from May 13 through August 5. Grow RVA connects local farms, local food and local arts with Richmond communities. We look forward to this wonderful opportunity to create a deeper bond with our surrounding community. With the hope that everyone will attend, the Vestry approved having only one service on the day of the Bishop s visitation on June 7 at 10:00 am.
