4 NEWS FOR THE BODY OF CHRIST Grace and Truth: a Bible Study and Conversation on God's Design for Marriage and Sexuality TODAY at Noon Due to interest, this will be a repeat presentation of the study and conversation we held in July. It will include a study of scriptures on marriage, sexuality and homosexuality. There will be time for reflection, dialogue and prayer. This is a particularly relevant topic in our culture, our personal lives and in light of the PC-USA General Assembly actions to redefine marriage. You are invited, whatever your perspective, to participate. Questions contact Pastor Robbie. Golden Oldies For Thanksgiving this year, Bethany will be partnering with Crossroads Church and St. Mary's to deliver meals to families in need in the area. Please see the orange insert in the bulletin to volunteer. The next planning meeting is on November 13 at 6:30. If you have any referrals or questions, please feel free to contact Jaymi Emanuelson at Jaymi1961@hotmail.com or Bethany Youth Ringers have started! We could use a few more ringers. Plan on coming and offering praise to God. Rehearsal is from 7:00 until 7:30 in the choir room on Tuesdays (after LOGOS). PW Fundraiser: PW is continuing to host a fundraiser with That s My Pan, a variety of personalized pans and assorted items. All proceeds will go to the mission Bethany Helping Hands. Stop by the display table in the Welcome Center. These make a wonderful gift! Presbyterian Women s new Mission Project (Santi-Panti s) is up and running. Please stop by the PW table in the Welcome Center to find out more about this project. This is a very much needed project in the other places of the world. Your help is need in sewing these santi-panti s. Kits and patterns will be available.

5 The 200-year Bicentennial history books are still available. Please see Carol or Tom Willhite. You can also contact the church office at A donation to help defray the cost of printing is suggested. Operation Christmas Boxes Presbyterian Women along with MOPS are going to be organizing the Operation Christmas Boxes. Please stop by the table in the Welcome Center and pick-up your box and flyer explaining the program. They are due back by November 16. If you have any questions please call Lynne Suchoza Please see Carolyn Garretson in the Welcome Center today for updated prayer lists from The Fellowship of Prayer. The Haiti Mission Team will be selling pies ONLY TODAY. These are delicious pies from the Pie Shoppe in Laughlintown PA. The proceeds will help the mission team purchase as much rice for several villages while they are in Haiti for distribution to as many families as possible! Order forms are at the table by the nursery. The pies will be at the church on Friday, November 21st which is the week before Thanksgiving for pickup. You will be notified when the pies are at the church. Pies are $9.00 each and checks should be made out to Bethany. Cream pies will have to be eaten that Friday or Saturday (oh darn!) - the fruit pies can be frozen and warmed on Thanksgiving Day. Buxtehude Presbyterian History The first Presbytery is formed in western Pennsylvania. John Stevenson, a member of the Pigeon Creek Presbyterian Church in Washington County, hosted a two-day meeting at his spacious log cabin home on September 19, 1781 for the purpose of responding to a call of the Synod of New York and Pennsylvania to organize the Presbytery of Redstone. In addition to three ministers, attendees included laymen and elders. Of particular note, the Ten Mile Church (near Prosperity, PA) was represented by Elder Demas Lindley whose family and congregation came from Mendham, New Jersey. His Fort Lindley home was a point of refuge that always held firm against attacks from Indians, and, in 1776, by attacks from Indians and British Loyalists. The meeting's host pastor was a 28 year-old, powerfully built man named John McMillan who was well suited for the frontier life. McMillan was the second pastor to establish permanent residence in western PA. His ministry of 60 years; powerful leadership; and devotion to western Pennsylvania Presbyterianism merited an honored title as "The Apostle of the West." Reverend's James Power and Thaddeus Dod were the other pastors in attendance. A fourth minister, Joseph "hell-fire" Smith could not attend. Threats from a warring tribe of Indians near his Buffalo and Cross Creek congregations made it impossible for him to leave and share in this organizing fellowship. Prayer, refreshments, and fellowship were punctuated by preaching from a text in the Book of Job by Rev. Thaddeus Dod. John McMillan was chosen to serve as the first moderator, and James Power was constituted as the first Stated Clerk. The minutes fail to record other business transactions. However, the Redstone Presbytery was up and running with renewed faith and a vision for the future.
