3 Guest Column July 21 July 28, 2018 I am o en asked, especially by young people, why I became a priest...i must begin by saying that it is impossible to explain en rely...yet, I know that, at a certain point in my life, I became convinced that Christ was saying to me what he had said to thousands before me: 'Come, follow me!'...christ was calling me to serve him as a priest. St. John Paul II What do Fr. Bob Mucci, Fr. Mike Panicali and three of Brooklyn s current seminarians have in common? We are all late voca ons. Late voca ons are men who lived and worked in another field before they entered seminary. There are many reasons why people have late voca ons. One late voca on worked as an accountant all his life un l one day a colleague asked for his help in ge ng a priest to administer Last Rites to his dying mother. They had great difficulty finding one and this man realized I have to become a priest. One of our Brooklyn seminarians was in his fi ies when, while driving one a ernoon, heard a voice that said go to church. He wasn t even Chris an at the me. Most late voca on stories aren t as drama c. Typically, they re a delayed response to a call that had been in the back of one s mind for many years. That s how it was for me. When I was a child, if you asked what I wanted to become when I grew up, I would have said an airplane pilot or maybe a priest. As the years passed, I was drawn to other professions, but priesthood was always in mind. The noise of modern life can overwhelm the quiet voice that calls one to the priesthood. I ending up going into banking and finance and enjoyed the work, but it was never fulfilling. In fact, even though I liked my colleagues and work, the years that I lived in luxury, playing golf, tennis, and doing whatever else I wanted, were the emp est years of my life. The thought of being a priest s ll remained. Then my mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2004 and given a li le over one year to live. Through God s grace, that year stretched to two years, then three, then four, all the way to over ten. I spent a lot of me in hospitals and finally in a hospice as well. When the priest administered Last Rites (now called Anoin ng of the Sick) to my mom, it was like a visit from an angel. What a tremendous gi for the dying, the assurance that their sins are forgiven and their true life in heaven is soon to begin. When one spends me around the dying, it becomes crystal clear that the only thing that ma ers is your rela onship with God. Your rela onship with God determines how you spend eternity. Despite this, I was s ll hesitant about calling the Voca ons Office. Many men are wai ng for a sign from God or something that defini vely confirms their voca on. Then one day, I was watching EWTN and saw Fr. Benedict Groeschel. He was talking about voca ons and said that his advice for those considering a voca on is if you think you might have a voca on, pursue it. That made me realize that I didn t need 100% certainty to apply to seminary. A er ten years of sickness, my mom died in the close friendship of God and my father died the following month. I was free of any obliga ons to others and could now enter seminary without hesita on. I have con nued to have a sense of peace in the seminary, and hope to one day do the most important job in the world, work for the salva on of souls. -Alex Olszewski, Seminarian

5 Office of Faith Formation No Summer Office Hours To the left of St. Elizabeth of Portugal on the Voorhies Ave. side of the church is a depiction of St. Dominic, founder of the Order of Preachers, the Dominicans. Also the patron saint of astronomers, his upcoming feast day is August 8. St. Dominic was of Spanish descent, having been born in Calaroga in Old Castile, Spain, in At age fourteen be began his education for the priesthood. He devoted his life to the work of his own sanctification and of others, laboring zealously to preach the Word of God and to combat the heresies of his day. Accompanying his bishop on missionary journeys, while in Rome, St. Dominic received permission from Pope Innocent III to preach the Gospel to those caught up in perilous heresy. To provide for the education of children, he established a convent of nuns in Prouille, France, which became the nucleus of the Order of Dominican nuns, now over eight-hundred years old. Along with several companions, he laid the foundations of his own Order of Preachers while overseeing missions in France, the Rules of which were approved by Pope Honorius III in Some time after that, Honorius III created the office of Master of the Sacred Palace, or the Pope s domestic theologian, and St. Dominic was the first to fill it. The active life of the saint was spent in traveling for the interests of God and His Church, preaching the Gospel, lecturing on theology, and establishing houses of Dominicans which, even during his lifetime, grew in number and of which Honorius III made him General in St. Dominic is largely attributed with spreading devotion to the Rosary, which has been a hallmark of Dominican spirituality since the order s founding. According to Pope Pius XI, "The Rosary of Mary is the principle and foundation on which the very Order of Saint Dominic rests for making perfect the life of its members and obtaining the salvation of others." The Dominicans have taken up the mantle of their founder in continuing to promulgate the power in the recitation of the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary. St. Dominic passed away in Bologna, Italy on August 6, ***REGISTRATION FOR NEXT YEAR S RELIGION CLASSES HAS BEGUN*** Please remember your child s faith formation is ongoing. Receiving First Holy Communion does not mean they stop attending religion classes. The continuation of their faith formation is ongoing toward the Sacrament of Confirmation, which they receive in the 8th grade.
