1 The Presbyterian Church BASKING RIDGE, NEW JERSEY FOUNDED CIRCA 1717 April 1 and 2, 2017 Youth Sunday Weekend Fifth Weekend of Lent Grant unto us, O God, the fullness of your promises. Where we have been weak, grant us your strength; where we have been confused, grant us your guidance; where we have been distraught, grant us your comfort; where we have been dead, grant us your life. Apart from you, O Lord, we are nothing, in and with you we can do all things. Amen.

We are a vibrant, warm and welcoming community of faith. Those who worship here come from a diverse range of backgrounds and would describe themselves in a rich variety of ways. We acknowledge our doubt, our struggles, and that we are all quite human and imperfect and that we are each at a unique place on our faith journey. We find our unity, our common identity, in Jesus Christ and together we seek to joyfully worship God and energetically minister to the needs of the world on God s behalf. We gather in anticipation of being transformed by the power, purpose and presence of God among us, and go forth equipped to love God and neighbor more deeply and more wholeheartedly. We believe that faithful leadership of a church requires being open to new possibilities, taking risks and learning from mistakes as we try again. Honoring the past, we are convinced that God calls us to a new future. ~The Opening Paragraph of Vision 2017 of the Presbyterian Church in Basking Ridge

The choir is under the direction of Marcia Sommers, a native of Cranford, NJ, who holds music degrees from Westminster Choir College and Eastern Kentucky University. The concert is free; an offering to defray the expenses will be received, and a reception will follow. Mission Mission Spotlight for March: Good News Home for Women, Flemington, NJ The mission of the Good News Home is to provide a comprehensive long and short-term residential substance abuse treatment program that offers a professional, non-denominational, Christian approach, focusing on healing the total woman utilizing Christian 12-steps, addiction counseling, life skills and spiritual counseling to overcome drug addiction, with integrated treatment for clients who have been diagnosed with co-occurring mental disorders. Underlying their mission is the basic philosophy that faith in God can do for us that we cannot do for ourselves. In the past BRPC has supported the Good News Home for Women through our giving to the Presbytery mission budget. In recent years we have opted to give directly to this organization and are excited to welcome a representative from the home to be with us today to share more of their story. Mission Potluck Luncheon - Today following 10:15 a.m. worship Plan to join us in Westminster Hall as we welcome Robin Jackson, the Development Director of the Good News Home for Women who will share with us about the work and mission of the organization. We will also assemble hygiene kits for women in the program and need your help in collecting: Toothpaste; Toothbrushes; Shampoo; Conditioner; Lotion; Soap; Sanitary Items. Collection boxes are in the Narthex, Westminster Hall and the Church Office. Interfaith Hospitality Hosting Week is Coming up! Thank you for your faithful support and generosity, as we serve God by serving others! 8 The Season of Lent Lent 2017 at BRPC - Encounters with Jesus Lent is the 40-day season of the Christian year where Christians focus on simple living, prayer, and fasting, in order to grow closer to God. It is a season of taking stock of one s life in general and one s spiritual life in particular, and to seek repentance, renewal, and rebirth. This Lent, our theme is Encounters with Jesus, when we will meet the people who met Jesus. We will learn from their joys and their struggles, from what they discovered and from what they totally missed. In the midst of that we will open our own hearts and minds to the transformative encounters that our Lord yearns to have with each of us here and now. Lenten Special Offering During the Lenten season we invite you to make a contribution to a special mission offering which will benefit God's Co-op Pantry. Founded in 2011 by a small group of women from BRPC, the Pantry aims to provide food security to residents living in our local community. We distribute 300 bags a month to residents from Ridge Oak, veterans from the Community of Hope and local families and individuals. Your monetary and food donations keep this program in operation. During the Lenten season we are collecting Maseca Flour (4 lb. bag), Vegetable Oil (28 oz.), dried black beans and powdered chicken bullion or you may make a financial donation. Please bring your donations to the church house or mark your check Lenten Special Offering. Thank you for your support! 14 Today s Scripture Reading John 11:1-6, New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) The Death of Lazarus 11 Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2 Mary was the one who anointed the Lord with perfume and wiped his feet with her hair; her brother Lazarus was ill. 3 So the sisters sent a message to Jesus, [a] Lord, he whom you love is ill. 4 But when Jesus heard it, he said, This illness does not lead to death; rather it is for God s glory, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it. 5 Accordingly, though Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus, 6 after having heard that Lazarus [b] was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was. Jesus the Resurrection and the Life 17 When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus [d] had already been in the tomb four days. 18 Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, some two miles [e] away, 19 and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them about their brother. 20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, while Mary stayed at home. 21 Martha said to Jesus, Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask of him. 23 Jesus said to her, Your brother will rise again. 24 Martha said to him, I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day. 25 Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life. [f] Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this? 27 She said to him, Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Messiah, [g] the Son of God, the one coming into the world. Jesus Weeps 28 When she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary, and told her privately, The Teacher is here and is calling for you. 29 And when she heard it, she got up quickly and went to him. 30 Now Jesus had not yet come to the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him. 31 The Jews who were with her in the house, consoling her, saw Mary get up quickly and go out. They followed her because they thought that she was going to the tomb to weep there. 32 When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. 34 He said, Where have you laid him? They said to him, Lord, come and see. 35 Jesus began to weep. 36 So the Jews said, See how he loved him! 37 But some of them said, Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?
15 Jesus Raises Lazarus to Life 38 Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. 39 Jesus said, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, Lord, already there is a stench because he has been dead four days. 40 Jesus said to her, Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God? 41 So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upward and said, Father, I thank you for having heard me. 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me. 43 When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come out! 44 The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, Unbind him, and let him go.
