1 the story St. Thomas Episcopal Church February 2018 Volume 41, Issue 2 All are Welcome No Exceptions! St. Thomas Episcopal Church accepts all people and we commit to: Celebrate the Eucharist regularly Keep a personal and community discipline of prayer and study Proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ by promoting justice, peace, and love Nurture God s people as we grow in Christ Live with thanksgiving, wonder, and openness to God s love Restore all people to unity with God and each other Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper February 13 5 to 7 pm Come celebrate Mardi Gras with us! The cost is $5/person or $10/family. Invite your family & friends! We will have a pancake topping bar fruits, syrup, chocolate, etc. Donate items for the topping bar. Bring by non-perishable items by Feb. 4. Perishable items can be brought to the kitchen Feb. 11. A portion of the proceeds goes to the St. Thomas Cub Scouts. They will be helping. We still need volunteers for set-up, clean-up or to help in the kitchen. Ann Kieffer & Cynthia Dozier are the coordinators. February 14 Ash Wednesday The Rev. Canon Richard Halladay will distribute ashes on Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return. Easter is April 1. KEEPING A HOLY LENT MORE THAN GIVING SOMETHING UP Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, the 40 days of preparation for the Easter season when Christians are called to deepen their spiritual lives through the practices of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving. The belief is that our consistent participation in these practices like exercise we do for our physical health improves our spiritual well-being by stripping away all that is unnecessary and becoming more mindful of how God is working in our lives. Challenge yourself this year, and go beyond the usual practice of giving up something. Now is a great time to take stock of your spiritual life and to grow in it. Not sure where to start? Here are a few ideas: Take something on 40 days of letter writing, 40 acts of kindness, etc. Unplug from your cell phone or turn off your car radio on your daily commute and be more observant of your surroundings. Buy a book of daily reflections and keep it by your bed. Spend at least one day a week volunteering during Lent. Serve a meal at your local soup kitchen. Visit the elderly. Stock shelves at a food pantry. Volunteer at St. Thomas. Learn more about a particular social issue (immigration, human trafficking, racism, the environment, public education, child poverty). Give money to an organization related to your chosen issue that supports the dignity of the human person.
2 Parish Life Page 2 Congregational Day of Discovery On February 11, 2018, Canon Debra Kissinger will lead us in a congregational Day of Discovery. Worship will be followed by a pitch-in lunch (you know the food will be good because you will bring it), after which the highly participatory program will begin. ANNUAL MEETING RESULTS Two Vestry members were elected on January 28: Rachel Allen and Cynthia Dozier will serve for three year terms Karen Smith was elected as Clerk of the Vestry. John Dozier and Jamison Allen were elected as the St. Thomas Convention delegates for the 2018 Diocesan Convention. Jim Alexander will serve as the alternate. The 2018 Proposed Budget was approved and area reports were given. See the bulletin board for more Annual Meeting information. Vestry meets Sunday, February 4 at 11:30 a.m. YOU WON T WANT TO MISS THIS PROGRAM!!! This is your chance to be heard, to talk about your vision for St. Thomas and to discern the qualities you might want in a new priest. Canon Kissinger will outline our search process and talk about what s next. Then we will form small groups with vestry members as table leaders. We ll encourage everyone to participate in small groups. Each table will share with the whole group, but the great thing is that your voice can be heard even if you don t want to speak to the group. Many of you will remember that a year ago we did a good bit of work on what we wanted St. Thomas to do and be in the community. This conversation will build on that work rather than supersede it. We expect that the discoveries that come out of this meeting will give the vestry and the search committee the information needed to prepare our portfolio, update our website and begin our search in earnest. Thank you in advance for your enthusiastic participation.
