The Hymns Emmanuel Presbyterian Church is well-known as a singing church! We take Paul s words in Colossians 3:16 seriously, Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. The hymns that we sing represent some of the best music that the church has produced over the last 2,000 years. We stand in a long tradition of church music and we work very hard to choose hymns that are true, good, and beautiful. We want to sing true hymns, those that accurately reflect biblical teaching about God, this world, and our life in it. We want to sing good hymns, those that fit the place in the service where we sing them and have also stood the test of time. And, we want to sing beautiful hymns, those whose lyrics and tune unite to convey the message of the hymn in a manner that gives the congregation full voice. So, lift up your voice and join with all the angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, to praise and magnify God s glorious name! Liturgical Color: Purple the color of penitence and fasting
The Divine Service March 10, 2019 The First Sunday in Lent In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, Emmanuel Presbyterian Church opens wide her doors and offers welcome to all who sin and need a Savior; to all who are spiritually weak and seek rest; to all who mourn and long for comfort; to all who struggle and desire victory; to all who are strangers and want fellowship; to all who hunger and thirst after righteousness; and to whosoever will come. PRELUDE During the Day as the Sun, at Night as the Moon Yongduck Choi During the day as the sun, At night as the moon, How could I live like them? They are living their whole life For other people Lighting darkness without any greed. I have a dream to be a salt and a light of the world. I want to lead to the Lord people who are poor and tired. But my greed and wicked self are big burdens to me and distress me into hardship. So oh Jesus please help me. Bogum Park WORDS OF PREPARATION/SILENCE Luke 13:22-30 All scripture passages printed in back of bulletin. COLLECT OF THE DAY O almighty and eternal God, we implore you to direct, sanctify, and govern our hearts and bodies in the ways of your laws and the works of your commandments that through your mighty protection, both now and ever, we may be preserved in body and in soul; through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 4 CALL TO WORSHIP Introit HYMN OF INVOCATION The Service of Entrance Before the throne my Surety stands; my name is written on His hands! Arise, my soul arise! Shake off they guilty fears; the bleeding Sacrifice in my behalf appears. Before the throne my Surety stands; my name is written on His hands. Arise, My Soul, Arise Know that the LORD he is God: it is he that has made us, and not we ourselves; We are his people and the sheep of his pasture. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen. Let us pray. Congregation stands as able 4
PRAYER OF ADORATION world without end. Amen. CORPORATE CONFESSION OF SIN Dearly beloved, we have come together in the presence of Almighty God our heavenly Father, to render thanks for the great benefits that we have received at his hands, to set forth his most worthy praise, to hear his holy Word, and to ask, for ourselves and on behalf of others, those things that are necessary for our life and our salvation. And so that we may prepare ourselves in heart and mind to worship him, let us with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins, that we may obtain forgiveness by his infinite goodness and mercy. Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God Almighty and most merciful Father; we have erred, and strayed from your ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against your holy laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; and we have done those things which we ought not to have done; and there is no health in us. But you, O Lord, have mercy upon us, miserable offenders. Spare those, O God, who confess their faults. Restore those who are penitent; according to your promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake; that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of your holy Name. Amen. Having confessed together our great need for God s mercy, let us now silently and humbly confess to God our personal and particular sins. Congregation stands as able 5
DECLARATION OF ABSOLUTION Hear the Word of the Gospel: Christ has died for our sins and been raised for our justification. All you who repent of your sin and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ for your salvation, rejoice and be glad and give glory to the Lord who has taken away all of your sins in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen. Our help is in the name of the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. O Lord, open our lips, and our mouth will declare your praise. THE GLORIA Congregation stands as able 6

The Service of the Word The Psalter Psalm 91:1-10, He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High Will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the LORD, My refuge and my fortress, My God, in whom I trust. For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler And from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and buckler. You will not fear the terror of the night, Nor the arrow that flies by day, Nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness, Nor the destruction that wastes at noonday. A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, But it will not come near you. You will only look with your eyes And see the recompense of the wicked. Because you have made the LORD your dwelling place The Most High, who is my refuge No evil shall be allowed to befall you, No plague come near your tent. Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my name. When he calls to me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him And show him my salvation. 10 WELCOME At this time, please pass the contact folders down the row, fill out the contact cards as necessary, and drop the card in the offering plate. INTERLUDE PRAYER OF SUPPLICATION John Ellis Unison: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil: for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. THE SERMON LESSON Luke 13:22-30 Leader: This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to you, O Christ! PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION MORNING SERMON The Last Will Be First Luke 13:22-30 Rev. 11 The Service of the Table CORPORATE CONFESSION OF FAITH The Nicene Creed Unison: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made: Who for us men, and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost, of the Virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried; and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of the Father. And he shall come again with glory to judge the quick and the dead: Whose kingdom shall have no end. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins. And I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. PASSING OF THE PEACE The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you! Let us offer one another a sign of peace. Members of the congregation greet one another with a sign of friendship such as the ancient words that the church has used over the centuries, The peace of Christ be with you, and the response, And also with you. 13 Yours, Lord, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the splendor, and the majesty; for everything in heaven and on earth is yours. PRAYER OF DEDICATION Our Gracious God and Father, giver of all good gifts, you have shown us the riches of your kindness and grace in the supremely magnificent offering of your Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, and by pouring upon us the gift of your Holy Spirit. Extravagant in your love and incomparable in wisdom and power, you are the one in whom we live, and move, and have our being. We return to you now these tithes and offerings, from your hand giving back to you. Take these loaves and fish and make of them your feast for the hungry that your church may be sustained, your gospel proclaimed in all the world, one generation tell the next of your greatness, and a house for your name be built among us. We pray this in the matchless name of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Emmanuel invites all baptized Christians to come to the table of our Lord and rejoice with us in God s grace given to us in Christ. This includes all Christians, whether you are a member of Emmanuel Presbyterian Church or another Church. Baptized children are admitted to the Table upon an age-appropriate profession of faith in Christ. If you require a gluten free communion bread, please come forward during the passing of the peace. The center cup and inner circle contain grape juice and the outer circles contain wine. Please hold each element until all have been served so that we may partake together. 14 THE GREAT THANKSGIVING The peace of the Lord be always with you! And also with you! Lift up your hearts! We lift them up to the Lord! Let us give thanks to our Lord God! It is good and right to do so! It is very good and right that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to you, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, Everlasting God, through Jesus Christ our Lord. You bid your people cleanse their hearts and prepare with joy for the paschal feast. Renew our zeal in faith and life, and bring us to the fullness of grace that belongs to the children of God. Therefore, with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we praise and magnify your glorious name, evermore praising you and singing: Congregation stands as able 14

Deuteronomy 26:1-11 The Lessons When you come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance and have taken possession of it and live in it, 2 you shall take some of the first of all the fruit of the ground, which you harvest from your land that the Lord your God is giving you, and you shall put it in a basket, and you shall go to the place that the Lord your God will choose, to make his name to dwell there. 3 And you shall go to the priest who is in office at that time and say to him, I declare today to the Lord your God that I have come into the land that the Lord swore to our fathers to give us. 4 Then the priest shall take the basket from your hand and set it down before the altar of the Lord your God. 5 And you shall make response before the Lord your God, A wandering Aramean was my father. And he went down into Egypt and sojourned there, few in number, and there he became a nation, great, mighty, and populous. 6 And the Egyptians treated us harshly and humiliated us and laid on us hard labor. 7 Then we cried to the Lord, the God of our fathers, and the Lord heard our voice and saw our affliction, our toil, and our oppression. 8 And the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with great deeds of terror, with signs and wonders. 9 And he brought us into this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey. 10 And behold, now I bring the first of the fruit of the ground, which you, O Lord, have given me. And you shall set it down before the Lord your God and worship before the Lord your God. 11 And you shall rejoice in all the good that the Lord your God has given to you and to your house, you, and the Levite, and the sojourner who is among you. Leader: Romans 10:8b-13 This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); 9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. 11 For the Scripture says, Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame. 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. 13 For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. 4:1 Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God, we do not lose heart. 2 But we have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways. We refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God s word, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to everyone s conscience in the sight of God. Leader: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God!
Luke 13: He went on his way through towns and villages, teaching and journeying toward Jerusalem. 23 And someone said to him, Lord, will those who are saved be few? And he said to them, 24 Strive to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able. 25 When once the master of the house has risen and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, open to us, then he will answer you, I do not know where you come from. 26 Then you will begin to say, We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our streets. 27 But he will say, I tell you, I do not know where you come from. Depart from me, all you workers of evil! 28 In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God but you yourselves cast out. 29 And people will come from east and west, and from north and south, and recline at table in the kingdom of God. 30 And behold, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last. Leader: This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to you, O Christ!

Taking Gathered Worship Home The First Week of Lent Sunday, March 10, 2019 Taking Gathered Worship Home (TGWH) has been developed for you to use in the private worship of your home, whether you are married or single, and whether or not you have children. It is a tool to knit us together throughout the church year. While we would encourage the use of TGWH in its entirety, you are encouraged to adapt the offerings to your particular circumstances. The prayer is taken from Lutheran Worship and the psalm readings are taken from the Book of Common Prayer and the daily readings are from The Book of Common Worship.
