The Episcopal Mission of St. Andrew s By The Lake A Message from your Vicar... March/April 2014 Happiness. Have you heard the song? Pharrell William s new song called Happy? It s catchy. It makes you snap your fingers, bob your head, wiggle your body. Eliot and Naomi love it. Billboard says it s the number one song in the country. Pharrell Williams does what a good singer does, makes us feel good. Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof Because I m happy Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth Because I m happy Clap along if you know what happiness is to you Because I m happy Clap along if you feel like that s what you wanna do That s the chorus, it s a happy chorus with a wonderful stop-you-in-your-tracks kind of question. Clap along if you know what happiness is to you. Some of you may say I am trying to squeeze blood out of a turnip but it s a good question to stew upon. Particularly in view of the February 23 rd Gospel, Jesus says, Love your neighbors and love your enemies. He goes on to say that loving our neighbors is nice, but loving your enemies, now that is what Jesus really wants us to do. Maybe Jesus really meant to love our frenemies? How can loving our enemies make us happy? Happiness for me is picking my kids up after school every Friday afternoon. Happiness for me is playing soccer two or three times a week. Happiness for me is worshipping with all of you. Happiness on the surface does not have much to do with loving my enemies. Of course I am such a good guy I don t have any enemies Ok, nonsense finished, what follows is much more serious. For many Lent trumps Easter, Lent gets a full 40 days, but Easter often only one day: Easter day. Recently, more churches do an Easter Vigil service along with an Easter service, so it has grown. But often we stop with Easter Sunday. We don t immerse ourselves into the next 50 days. The Day of Pentecost is actually when Easter ends. I understand why it is easy to function in this paradigm; Holy Week is a challenge for clergy and volunteers (read Altar Guild) every year. It is a production and we work hard to express our understanding of this sacred time. So I have been exploring ideas to create a meaningful 90-day Lent and Easter experience. Often during Lent we give something up, or, as is the case these days, we take something on. Either way, the intent is to be changed. We desire to change our behavior, our way of life, our relationships we want something different. The big question is: How will your behavior and your Lenten goals and work stick to your ribs, stick to your soul, stick in your mind and change your life permanently and for the greater good? In my own personal experience of Lent, I rarely have the opportunity to carry out what I decide to give up or take on past Easter Day. Little support, or opportunities for personal accountability are provided. (Continued on page 2)

(Continued from page 1) Well, now we will have the opportunity for reflection, to take action and practice our desired changed behavior, and let it unfold on a grander scale. We can make our Lenten discipline a habit, something that sticks. Let s see if we can take the 90-day Lent/Easter challenge and transform our lives, either by something great and amazing, or in a simple and profound way. Whatever you choose, let s gather, learn our stories and see how we can support one another as a community of faith living and learning about who we are and how we are God s beloved children. We will work our way through the 90-day season by connecting two aspects of our legendary environmental mission. For Lent we will explore our call to care ABOUT the Environment and during Easter we will explore our call to care FOR the environment. Caring ABOUT the environment in the season of Lent will focus on learning about the environment and our particular context. We will reflect, as one does during Lent, upon who we are and how we are connected to all of creation. Many of you have done this work, I know, but I hope connecting it with our Lenten disciplines might help us see our lives in a new way. In Easter, after Holy Week is gloriously celebrated, we will move to action, what are the things we can DO? How do we care FOR the environment? We will work together to flesh out individual plans for how we want to be changed or how we want to live a transformed life, no matter how big or small. Having reflected upon our impact, and how our lives can be changed, we move out into the world to see how the idea of Ubuntu can be manifest. How is it that I cannot be fully who I am, unless you are fully who you are. You cannot be fully who you are, if I am not fully who I am is true? We are all connected and we are all an integral part of creation. Let s find out how through concrete action. Let s create something allowing us to specifically answer Pharrell Williams question, Do you know what happiness is to you? And hopefully our answer will make another persons eyes go wide, will make another persons heart soar, will make another persons spirit joyfully embrace our own. Let s be changed this Lent AND Easter, let s make something new so we can experience the truth of happiness. Aron Bi-Monthly Grains of Sand Aron and I have decided to go with bi-monthly issues of the Grains of Sand. We will try this out for one year starting with this March/April newsletter. Prior to each bi-monthly newsletter and before the "reminder" is sent to potential contributors, Aron and I will meet to review what will be happening during the two month period and what needs to be included in the issue. We will request articles from specific people but, since we can't anticipate everything, we hope to get other articles as well. Knowing full well that events, such as a CHUM dinner, spring clean-up day, etc. are not always planned two months in advance we intend to utilize icontact for up-to-date messages. Note: Be sure to read the article regarding the updating of our Church Directory on page eight. For your convenience there is a complete listing of calendar events on page 11. 3 LENT/EASTER 90-Day Challenge During this 90-day challenge we will reflect on our relationship with creation. How are we connected to all of creation? We will explore our Lenten Disciplines and share our stories. Our Lenten focus will be, How do we care ABOUT creation? What kind of life do we want to live, how do we want to change our behavior. During Easter we will focus on the question, How do we care FOR creation. How do we take action based on the personal energy and reflection we have committed to changing our lives? Can we make visible the effect changing our life has upon the world? Specifics have not been identified, but each nights schedule has. We will gather at 6:30 p.m. for a potluck dinner. At 7 p.m. there will be a presentation, followed by time for questions. At the end of the night, we will reflect upon our Lenten disciplines and pray for one another as we go out into the world. The evening will close by 8:30 p.m. MARCH 5 TH MARCH 12 th MARCH 19 th MARCH 26 th APRIL 2 nd APRIL 9 th APRIL 16 th APRIL 23 rd APRIL 30 th MAY 7 th MAY 14 th MAY 21 st MAY 28 th JUNE 8 th Ash Wednesday Potluck and : Caring ABOUT Creation Potluck and : Caring ABOUT Creation Potluck and : Caring ABOUT Creation Potluck and : Caring ABOUT Creation Potluck and : Caring ABOUT Creation HOLY WEEK, No Wednesday evening Potluck and WED AFTER EASTER, No Wednesday evening Potluck and Potluck and : Caring FOR Creation Potluck and : Caring FOR Creation Potluck and : Caring FOR Creation Potluck and : Caring FOR Creation Potluck and : Caring FOR Creation DAY OF PENTECOST, SPECIAL CLOSING CEREMONIES Aron SUNDAY MORNING ADULT EDUCATION There will be a shift in how we do Adult Education on Sunday mornings. With Bishop s Committee meeting on the 3 rd Sunday of every month, and CHUM bag lunches wonderfully consuming every 2 nd Sunday, we are left with the 1 st and 4 th Sundays of each month. Aron will be playing with some ideas to create themes for those two Sundays, but would love your input. What would you like to do on a Sunday morning after Church? Bible studies? Book studies? Video series? Please talk with Aron if you have ideas. Every 5 th Sunday there will be no Adult Education. God rested on the 5 th Sunday. Christian Formation for Children In March, the elementary children will continue with stories of Jesus and the church calendar through Godly Play and Spark. Liz Maeshima and JoAnne Axtell will lead the Godly Play stories. In April, in preparation of Easter, the children will make crosses and have Spark Bible Stories. On Easter we will have a special lesson on the Empty Tomb and an Easter Egg Hunt! Submitted by Sally T. Buck Page 3

How do I pray with another person, subtext (I really don t know how to pray for me). Today in Church I asked several people (on the spur of the moment) to take over the healing prayer station. I received a polite but resounding NO. Later, when I was speaking to John, he said praying is difficult, I can speak to hundreds of people on a topic that I know, but praying!?! I said, The words will come to you. He said, HOW? As I spoke with him, I decided to reframe my response. I asked him if a person came to him with a problem to discuss, would he turn them away? Of course not, he said. Then I said to him, I have a concern, I thought a lot about it this morning before church. My macular degeneration is accelerating, and I have great fear about how this will change my life. He looked at me with great kindness, and said Mary Ellen I am sorry, however I know you are a woman of strength and creativity. You will persevere with this challenge. You have a great support system; I know you will find the courage to see you through." Ah, I said, see you do know how to pray. All you need to do is reframe your response. Let s try it. Dear God, I feel sorrow for Mary Ellen s suffering. I know that You will take her in your arms, and give her the strength to persevere. Help her to reach out to others, give her courage, and sustain her belief in Your love. Amen. So there it is. We are all advice givers. We all respond to people who are in trouble or need or sorrow. So just preface it with Dear God, and finish with Amen then anything and everything is a prayer. Sincerely, Mary Ellen Owens Page 4

March is Minnesota Food Share Month Help CHUM Fight Hunger in Duluth March provides an unequaled opportunity for people to stretch cash and food contributions to food shelves. The Minnesota FoodShare March Campaign provides a proportional match for all food and financial contributions received throughout the month of March. The Feinstein Foundation provides a proportional match for all gifts given in March. What a way to double our contributions! Cash donations are especially welcome. They allow the Food Shelf to take advantage of lower prices available through local vendors. Simply write a check to St. Andrew s and put CHUM Food Shelf in the memo line at the bottom or put cash in an envelope and label it CHUM Food Shelf. Ash Wednesday Services March 5 There will be two Ash Wednesday services this year, Noon and 7 p.m. The early service will have no music. There will be readings, a homily and imposition of ashes. Eucharist will also be offered. Following the brief service, a simple soup and bread lunch will be available. The late service will have music, readings, imposition of ashes and Eucharist. It will not be a brief service and no dinner or food will follow the service. Reader s Choice Book Club March 7 The next meeting of the St. Andrew s book club is scheduled for Friday, March 7 at Porter s Restaurant. We will meet for lunch and book discussion at Noon. The meetings last about one hour. Please join us if you can. For more information contact Sandy Carlson at or at carlzimm@msn.com. 6 The Joint Religious Legislative Coalition (JRLC) Day on the Hill March 13 The Joint Religious Legislative Coalition (JRLC) Day on the Hill is coming up on Thursday, March 13 th in St. Paul, Minnesota. The focus this year is on Family Economic Security, which fits in perfectly with the Episcopal Church in Minnesota s focus on Mission Opportunity 2014: Engaging God s Children in our Neighborhoods. Day on the Hill is an opportunity for all of us to advocate along side hundreds of people of faith for a higher minimum wage, a lower cost of childcare, and an end to payday lending. Register and find more information here: Ladies Night Out March 18 We'll have a Ladies' Night Out at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 18 th at Dubh Linn Irish Brew Pub, 109 West Superior Street. Come and join us to celebrate St. Patrick's Day! They have a very interesting menu. See link below. If you would like to come please contact Elena Knezevich at or eknezevich@hotmail.com. Recycling Wool Sweaters into Mittens (Cancelled for March 22) Rescheduled for Saturday, March 29 The Creative Hands group met Saturday morning, February 22 nd with Ellie Alspach, a member of the Visual Arts Committee. She has several bins of washed wool sweaters (felted) and would like to use them with the Creative Hands group, the Visual Art Committee and anyone else interested in making mittens. The washed wool is in multiple colors and weights and there are patterns for women s and men s mittens. Children s mittens can also be made. The mittens are double layered and fairly easy to assemble. Anyone willing to cut, pin and sew could make mittens for themselves or others. No sewing experience is necessary. Machines and people with sewing experience will be available to help you finish your project. This is a great project for Lent and a wonderful opportunity to come together with your St. Andrew s friends. In times past we have had art projects to bring community together. Let s make this our Lenten project for this year. Make a pair for yourself and some to give away to those in need. Who knows what next winter might bring. Hopefully, by March 22, we will be done with this one! The project will take place in the Mission Hall at St. Andrew s on March 29 from 9:30 to 2 p.m. If interested, sign up on the sign-up sheet on the table in the foyer. Men and women are encouraged to attend. Bring yourself and perhaps a sewing machine if you have one, good shears for cutting (we will have some available), and grandma's button box for decoration. By the way, if you have accidently felted a wool sweater and don t know what to do with it, bring it along and we will make mittens out of it. Submitted by Ellie Alspach and Sandy Carlson Page 6

Creative Hands March 22 The regular monthly meeting of the Creative Hands group will still take place on Saturday, March 22 from 9:30 to 2 p.m. in the Mission Hall of St. Andrew s. TEC will take place March 28, 29 and 30 at St. James Church in Hibbing MN. TEC is a youth led retreat weekend sponsored by the Episcopal Church. This weekend offers opportunities for youth and adults to explore their relationships with God, Jesus and each other through song, worship and talks given by youth and adults. Great North! TEC weekends are based on the teachings and traditions of the Episcopal Faith. Below are links to two youtube videos about TEC. The first one is from our very own Great North! Tec #48, two years ago. You may recognize some of the youth on the video. The second one is from a Catholic TEC in Omaha, Nebraska which does a very nice job explaining what TEC is all about. You may be wondering how you can help TEC number 50? Well, I will be happy to tell you! 1. You can pray for everyone attending TEC #50, especially for the candidates that their hearts may be open to the messages of God s love that encompasses the weekend. 2. You can donate baked or store bought treats/ snacks (bars, brownies, chips, candy, popcorn etc ) for the Conference room. 3. You could write Wheat letters to youth and adults you may know on the weekend (a simple hi, we love you, have a good weekend, we are praying for you) note, letter is another way people see God s love from those near and far. 4. You could make a monetary donation to the weekend to help cover costs (Registration fee, Church space, food, supplies etc ). If making a donation by check please make it out to Great North! TEC. You can give your donations to Brian or Aron. Submitted by Brian Lundberg Page 7

Share the Love Concert Update We almost had to cancel the Share the Love 4 th Annual Concert on February 22, but this year the snowstorm quit a day before the concert... a concert in February is tricky! As I look at the sign-up sheets, I know that there were so many people who helped to make this year's concert such an enjoyable event. I hesitate to try to list everyone because I know I'll leave someone out. Not everyone who intended to was able to brave the weather and attend, others came without signing up, and the good people of St. Andrew's came through! We had set-up and clean-up crews, delicious and abundant desserts and many items for the silent auction. Laurie and Bill Bastien performed beautifully and had their audience singing along, having a wonderful time. The concert, in addition to being a social gathering, was also a fundraiser for St. Andrew's CHUM outreach. Not only was the evening an enjoyable event, but $1276 was raised to continue funding the monthly CHUM bag lunches and the dinners we cook and server three to four times a year. Thank you everyone who came, volunteered, donated, and enjoyed the concert. This year (unlike last year) we didn't have to cancel and reschedule the Share the Love Concert, but it was close. We are planning on changing the 5 th Annual Share the Love Concert to a mid-october date. Snowstorms are less likely then... With the coffers refilled, we will continue to make 90 bag lunches a month and start planning to make and serve another CHUM dinner in the near future.
