3 January 6, 2019 Epiphany of Our Lord the Gentiles are co-heirs, members of the same body, and co-partners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the Gospel. (Ephesians 3:6) Today we celebrate that Christ came to all of us, not just the Hebrews. He has given each of us unique gifts. We all have different yet equally valuable roles to play in the Body of Christ. Pray daily and ask God how He wants you to use your gifts so that we may all be one. FINDING GOD The splendid magi, all sparkle and dash and solemnity, march right up off the pages of Matthew s Gospel and into our churches today. Matthew alone tells us this grand and seductive story so that we might see the light and know that the child these magi visited is the fulfillment of prophecy, the king of the world that stretches to the magi s home country and beyond, right down the ages to us. We too see and understand anew. Like the magi, our patron saints for this day, we see in the newborn child the king of the universe and light of the world. Like the magi, we find in ourselves a new faith and a new life. Like them, we return to our home by a new route. We are asked to come away from this festive season ourselves renewed and awake to the presence of God among us. This curious difference in schedule has a lot to do with how calendars have been developed and changed over the years. In the year 45 b.c. Julius Ceasar gave the empire his Julian Calendar, with the winter solstice on January 6. This put an end to a system in which officials called pontiffs were able to tweak the calendar by adding extra days in as needed. He invented two new months at that time, December and January; and in order to correct the mess the pontiffs had made, forced a year of 445 days on the empire in what he named The Last Year of Confusion. The new months varied in number of days according to a complex schedule, but the calendar was still off by nearly twelve minutes a year, and lost a full day every 130 years. Pope Gregory XIII reformed the calendar in 1583, but not everyone appreciated his efforts. England held out for two hundred years. The year 1700 was a leap year in England, but not in France; they were eleven days apart! George Washington was really born on February 11; when the Gregorian calendar was finally adopted in the English colonies shortly before the Revolution, he had to move his birthday to February 22. Now the calendars are thirteen days apart, which accounts for Russia s Julian calendar Christmas. And Caesar thought he had brought confusion to an end! James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. From childhood he had a tender love and devotion to the Blessed Mother. He finished his studies at an early age, and became a famous teacher. He then gave up all his honors and entered the Order of the Dominicans. He did much penance and was so good and kind that he won many sinners to God. With King James of Aragon and St. Peter Nolasco he founded the Order of Our Lady of Ransom. The brave religious of this Order devoted themselves to saving poor Christians captured by the Moors. Once he went with King James to the Island of Majorca to preach about Jesus. King James was a man of great qualities, but he let himself be ruled by passions. There on the Island, too, he was giving bad example. The Saint commanded him to send the woman away. The King said he would, but he did not keep his promise. So St. Raymond decided to leave the Island. The King declared he would punish any ship captain who brought the Saint back to Barcelona. Putting all his trust in God, Saint Raymond spread his cloak upon the water, tied up one corner of it to a stick for a sail, made the Sign of the Cross, stepped onto the cloak, and sailed along for six hours until he reached Barcelona. This miracle moved the King. He was sorry for what he had done, and he became a true follower of St. Raymond. St. Raymond was one hundred years old at the time of his death.

Faith Formation classes resume this Sunday, January 6. We will meet every Sunday in January except for January 20. Attention, Pre-K parents Please encourage your child to use the bathroom before class. Group bathroom visits during class create a disruption and cut down on learning time. Thanks for your cooperation in this. New penance policy Per Fr. Martino, Faith Formation penance will no longer be held during class time. Parents are invited to bring their children with them to parish penance services held during Advent and Lent. Or you may bring your child any Saturday from 4 to 4:30 pm to the confessional in back of the parish hall. Fr. Martino is always available for confession on request. To schedule, call him at Absences Absence from Faith Formation is considered excused in the case of illness, family emergency, funeral or previously-scheduled family occasion (such as a wedding). Students in sacramental classes (grades 2, 8 and 9) are permitted only two excused absences. Please notify the DRE by phone or , including the child s grade, with any excused absence. Virtus Training The VIRTUS "Protecting God's Children for Adults" training will be held at St. John the Evangelist Church St. John the Evangelist CHURCH (Valdosta), 800 Gornto Road, on Tuesday, January 29, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. in Room #7. This class has content not suitable for young children. Childcare is NOT provided, so please make arrangements accordingly. No one under age 18 will be admitted due to sensitive subject matter - no infants, no toddlers, no children, no teens. You MUST log in through VIRTUS website to receive credit for session (do so by clicking on the VIRTUS pre-registration link below). The class will start promptly at 6:00 pm. Once doors are closed no late admittance will be allowed. This training is required for all who provide either paid or volunteer ministry in our diocese who in the course of their ministry come into contact with minors. 7 Epiphany House Blessing 2019 Traditionally conducted by the head of the household. Using the blessed chalk that you brought with you from church, you will write numbers, letters, and crosses on the lintel of your home s front door (and any other door you wish) while reciting a prayer. The end result should look something like this, ideally centered over the door: 20 + C + M + B + 19 The prayer follows below; what you write while saying each part is indicated. Read it through beforehand and try to visualize the spacing and positioning of the letters so that you have a beautiful outcome! The inscription may be written either on the outside or inside of the home. In any case, it remains throughout the year as a reminder that yours is a Catholic and Christian home.
