I write it that way to indicate both the holiday and the practice of giving thanks! Even a brief time of reflection brings to mind the many reasons for gratitude that fill our lives. Currently I am reading a book entitled, Grateful: The Transformative Power of Giving Thanks by Diana Butler Bass. In it she quotes David Steindl -Rast, Everything is a gift. The degree to which we are awake to this truth is a measure of our gratefulness, and gratefulness is a measure of our aliveness. This theme of gratitude will flow through the month of November from our Women s Retreat Nov. 2-4, to our worship each Sunday, and on into our stewardship as we share the gifts that fill our lives through the use of our time, talents and resources to serve God in the church as we reach out with God s love to our community and world. Butler-Bass states, Jesus promises that gifts, like wildflowers in a field, surround our lives as extravagant goodness and care. There is enough, enough for all people, in all times, and in all places. In the biblical view, God gives all gifts, and we human beings accept them and pass them on to one another. Our faith is a wonderful circle of reciprocity we are gifted N O V E M E R with love and life from our Creator God and then we live our lives expressing our gratitude by giving of ourselves to others. Praise God from whom all Blessings Flow we sing these words in the Doxology each Sunday as we celebrate God s gifts and dedicate our gifts to be used for God s glory. Thank you for joining in this ongoing response to God s grace. Joy and peace to you in Christ, Pastor Vicky

4 Narrative Lectionary Readings, Ten Commandments Series November 4 - Communion Rev. Brian Reeves 2 Kings 5:1-15a Matthew 8:2-3 November 11 Rev. Vicky Brown Micah 1:3-5; 5:2-5a; 6:6-8 Matthew 9:13 November 18 - Communion Rev. Vicky Brown Isaiah 36:1-3, 13-20; 37:1-7, 2:1-4 Matthew 5:14 November 25 Rev. Vicky Brown Jeremiah 1:4-10; 7:1-11 Matthew 21:12-13 Building Update September 29 began early with a call from Douglas County communications stating that there was water in the church. City water from a broken water main was flowing down Lane and Jackson streets finding its way into most of our first floor rooms, with over a foot in the social hall. The past few weeks have been filled with moving furniture and the removal of cabinetry and flooring which also included asbestos abatement found in the original flooring materials. Our insurance coverage is good, we have a strong group appointed by the session to guide the re-building phase and when all the work is completed our first floor will be wonderful! In the meantime, the life and work of the church continues on the second and third floors of the building and out into the community! Session Actions The Session met October 16 for its regular monthly meeting and took the following actions: Established a Rebuild Team to direct the reconstruction of our first floor. Members of the team are Bill Mehlhoff, Carole Eckerd, Connie Johnson, David Bartlett, Don Wright, Manya Meador, Pat Dicks, Ron Northcraft, Roxanne Bartlett, and Pastor Vicky. Set aside 2018 available Foundation Funds for additional work on the building that is cost effective to complete at this time because of the water damage. Examples of projects include adding additional grounded outlets in several rooms and asbestos abatement in a few areas. Parish Life Submitted by Connie Johnson As most of you are probably aware, our kitchen will undergo a transformation due to the recent flooding. I am not sure yet how much leeway we will have in making changes, but I would welcome your comments and suggestions for things you might like to see in a new kitchen. The November 2, 2018 Friday Night Dine-Out will be held at Bangkok West on Harvard Avenue. Sandra will have a sign-up sheet in the temporary coffee room on the second floor. I hope you are enjoying the beautiful fall weather and colors as much as I am. P A G E 4

5 Building and Grounds Submitted by Don Wright Amazing how fast circumstances beyond our control impact carefully thought out plans. This happened in the very early morning of September 29 th when a broken water main flooded our ground floor. At that point the committee s attention focused on recovery. After being informed by Pastor Vicky of the damage, I immediately called some members of the church and soon a small army of volunteers were busy moving books, furniture, glass ware, and other items to dry ground. To all that showed up I would like to thank you for the hours you put in that day trying to salvage as much as possible. However, as the sayings go; when the going gets tough, and making lemonade from lemons, Building & Grounds took advantage of the situation and implemented some needed improvements. Because the drywall in many areas of the first floor was removed due to potential for mold, we had an electrician install additional electrical outlets in the social hall, the church office, and the Prayer Room. A shortage of electrical outlets has been a problem for many years as our antiquated electrical system has not always kept up with demand from computers, printers, coffee machines, chili cook off crock pots. you name it. The additional outlets along with two new 20-amp circuits will fill the need. Additional electrical outlets in the kitchen is a possibility when the layout of our new kitchen is decided. Stay tuned for additional information, as we will be focusing on the rebuild of the first floor for the next few months. Through the Worship Window Submitted by Manya Meador Fall has proven to have its challenges with all of the renovations taking place. Our congregation has really stepped up and taken these events in stride. With the women s retreat coming up the first weekend in November we will have Brian Reeves at the pulpit covering for Vicky as she travels with the women to St. Rita's. We would love to have more people on our worship committee, so if you would be interested please let someone on the committee know. Being a part of the worship committee is interesting, fun, challenging and fulfilling so take a moment to consider joining us. The first Friday of each month is FPC Dine- Out, a no host dinner for family, friends and congregation. Friday, November 2 we will gather at 5:30 p.m. at Bangkok West Roseburg. If interested, please sign up in the social hall or call the church office to add your name to the list no later than Wednesday, October 31 so that we may make reservations. birthdays Paul Johnston 2 Ken Donahue 4 Norma Jo Schallich 4 Tom Hatfield 5 Pat Mehlhoff 6 Linda Wetteland 8 Susan Carleton 10 Stefanie Cruz 10 Roxanne Bartlett 11 Jack Finney 14 Renee Cornelius 14 Connie Johnson 15 Lois Allen 17 Julia Johnson 17 Elsa Danskine 18 Joan Hanzlik 18 Joyce Cooper 19 Chris Wright 22 P A G E 5

7 Missions Submitted by Dianne Tunno The fall colors have been just beautiful this year, hope you ve been able to get out and enjoy the changing of the seasons. Yes, it s that time of the year, time to think holidays! The Giving Tree will be set up; you ll once again have an opportunity to help young people at Phoenix School have a special Christmas by taking a name tag off the tree and purchasing a gift for them to enjoy. Thanks to the congregation, the Peace & Global Witness offering taken in October, helped support the Samaritan Inn, a place for homeless women and children. Also want to say thanks to all who give to FISH either thru green bags or neighborhood donations, and those who donated their time to collect food at Albertson s on October 27th. Come join us at our next meeting, November 14th at 10 a.m. as we make plans to further serve our community, the nation, the world! Library Nook Submitted by Carole Eckerd THE GOOD BOOK: READING THE BIBLE WITH MIND AND HEART By Peter Gomes Gom In the introduction, the author says the theme of this book is the risk and the joy of the Bible: risk in that we might get it wrong, and joy in the discovery of the living Word becoming flesh. It is around this theme that I formulate three basic questions, which the thoughtful reader brings to the Bible: What is it? How is it used? What does it have to say to me? With compassion, humor, and insight, Gomes gives us the tools we need to make the Bible a dynamic part of our daily lives and reminds us that the Bible is not just doctrine and interpretation, but one of the most available and extraordinary means by which we are brought into proximity with the divine. 241 GRATEFUL: THE TRANSFORMATIVE POWER OF GIVING THANKS By Diana Butler Bass Bas If gratitude is good, why is it so hard to do? In grateful the author untangles our conflicting understandings of gratitude and sets the table for a renewed practice of giving thanks. We know that gratitude is good, but many of us find it hard to sustain a meaningful life of gratefulness. The author explores the transformative power of gratitude for our personal lives and in communities. Using a blend of historical research, spiritual insights, and timely cultural observation, she shows how we can overcome this gap and make change in our own lives and in the world. At our women s retreat this fall we will be using this book to explore more about gratitude and how it can affect our lives. P A G E 7
