1 Tidings of Peace 751 Hillsdale Drive Charlottesville, VA A Newsletter For Residents, Families & Guests Volume 24 Issue 12 December 2016 Happenings in December Thursday mornings: Music with Joe: Thursday Evenings Book Mobile: December 14 & 28 Annual Christmas Party: December 2 Christmas Crafts with Cindy December 7 Music & Fun with Eileen: December 8 Covenant Choir: December 9 Municipal Band Holiday Concert: December 11 Minda s Boutique: December 12 Cub Scouts Troop #: December 14 Books Sandwiched In: December 16 Woodmen of the World: December 18 Higher Voices: December 20 Birthday Dinner December 21 Nursing Homes Swing: Candlelight Service: December 22 Count Down til New Years: December 31 A Doll from Santa Alice s mother died when she was five years old. Although her nine brothers and sisters were loving and caring, they were no replacement for a mother s love. The year was 1925, and life was hard. Alice, who grew up to be my mother, told me that her family was too poor to even afford to give her a doll. In the aftermath of her loss, Alice vowed to care for others. First, her father, then her husband, later her three children and then her grandchildren were the main focus of her life. In December 1982, I had a job at a local bank. One afternoon, we were decorating the tree in the lobby and singing carols, when one of my customers approached me with a sample of her handiwork: beautiful handmade dolls. I decided to order one for my daughter, who was almost five. Then I had an idea. I asked her to make a special doll for my mother -one with gray hair and glasses: a grandmother doll. Things started to fall into place when a friend s dad agreed to visit our home on Christmas morning to deliver our daughter s presents! Knowing my parents would be there, I asked him to give my mother her doll as well. My daughter was surprised and elated to see Santa at her own house! When Santa asked who Alice was, my mother, taken aback by her name being called, indicated that she was in fact Alice. Santa handed her the gift, which had a message with it: For Alice; I was cleaning out my sleigh before my trip this year and came across this package that was supposed to be delivered on Christmas, The present inside has aged, but I felt that you might still wish to have it. Many apologies for the lateness. Love, Santa Clause. My mother s reaction was one of the most profound and deeply emotional scenes of my life as she held the doll she waited 57 years for. Merry Christmas to you all. ~Taken from Chicken Soup for the Soul~

3 Christmas Cards The activity staff would like to assist anyone that needs help with writing Christmas cards and/or addressing the envelopes. 4 Inspiration Chaplain s Corner Have we missed the most important message of Christmas? While the decorations and gifts bring us much joy, may we remember how much God loves us. The account of Christ s coming is about love. Our Creator came to us! God is love. He poured out His love to us through the birth of His Son, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. May His love flow in and through us each and every day in all that we say and do. December 2016 Bible Brain Workout The greatest gift of all? Read: 1 John 4:9 Happy Hanukkah and Merry Christmas!
