PARTNERS weekly newsletter 8 October 2017 Trinity 17 I am the Vine and you are the branches There are three references to the Vine in today s readings. It seems that God has been trying to tell or show us something for many hundreds of years! The story in Isaiah is how a friend carefully cherished a Vine but all the grapes were sour so he trashed it. The second story is in Psalm 80 here the fences protecting the Vine are casually broken down. The last of course is today s Gospel the Parable of the Wicked Husbandmen. In the first story the grapes turned sour because people were doing their own thing not listening to God. The second tells us that the people were not bothered one way or the other. In the Gospel parable it seems that the servants were attempting to own God and be in charge. Something that resonates with us today We want our own country back, we want to make our own rules, we want to be in charge, - how many times in a day do we hear this? Yet the whole world is being forced to be on the move with millions of refugees, people displaced by wars, natural disasters, genocide and famine. Some of us might remember a hymn we sang in childhood, - Jesus bids us shine with a pure clear light, which ends with you in your small corner and I in mine. Let us not be huddled up in our own small corner but look out to shine the light of love and compassion on our wounded world. Daphne Himmel. St Mary s Fordingbridge SP6 1BB St Mary s Breamore SP6 2DF Holy Ascension Hyde SP6 2QJ St Giles Godshill SP6 2JJ St Boniface Woodgreen SP6 2AJ St Mary s Hale SP6 2RF Sandleheath Uniting Church SP6 1PT We welcome all, especially visitors and those attending for the first time. If you need gluten free wafers at Communion, please speak to someone at the door before the service. Please take this newsletter home with you for the week ahead. Please stay after the morning service for tea and coffee, to meet folk and ask any questions. God Bless
COLLECT: Gracious God, READINGS - for you to use today and during the week you call us to fullness of life: deliver us from unbelief and banish our anxieties with the liberating love of Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN. PSALM 19:7-14 (For Morning Prayer) 8 October 2017 Trinity The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure and gives wisdom to the simple. 8. The statutes of the Lord are right and rejoice the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure and gives light to the eyes. 9. The fear of the Lord is clean and endures for ever; the judgements of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. 10. More to be desired are they than gold, more than much fine gold, sweeter also than honey, dripping from the honeycomb. 11. By them also is your servant taught and in keeping them there is great reward. 12. Who can tell how often they offend? O cleanse me from my secret faults! 13. Keep your servant also from presumptuous sins lest they get dominion over me; so shall I be undefiled, and innocent of great offence.
14. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my strength and my redeemer. A Reading from the Letter of Paul to the Philippians Philippians 3:4b-14 The only thing that matters for Christians is to know Christ as their Lord. If anyone else has reason to be confident in the flesh, I have more: 5 circumcised on the eighth day, a member of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew born of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; 6 as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless. 7 Yet whatever gains I had, these I have come to regard as loss because of Christ. 8 More than that, I regard everything as loss because of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things, and I regard them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but one that comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God based on faith. 10 I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the sharing of his sufferings by becoming like him in his death, 11 if somehow I may attain the resurrection from the dead. 12 Not that I have already obtained this or have already reached the goal; but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. 13 Beloved, I do not consider that I have made it my own; but this one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on towards the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus. At the end, the Reader says: For the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. THE GOSPEL READING Please stand and turn to face the Gospel Reader When the Gospel is announced, the Reader says: Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord. (Glory be to thee, O Lord.)
Matthew 21:33-46 Another story following on from the one we heard last week, for the Pharisees to think about. Jesus said to the chief priests and the elders of the people: 33 'Listen to another parable. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard, put a fence around it, dug a wine press in it, and built a watch-tower. Then he leased it to tenants and went to another country. 34 When the harvest time had come, he sent his slaves to the tenants to collect his produce. 35 But the tenants seized his slaves and beat one, killed another, and stoned another. 36 Again he sent other slaves, more than the first; and they treated them in the same way. 37 Finally he sent his son to them, saying, "They will respect my son." 38 But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, "This is the heir; come, let us kill him and get his inheritance." 39 So they seized him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him. 40 Now when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?' 41 They said to him, 'He will put those wretches to a miserable death, and lease the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the produce at the harvest time.' 42 Jesus said to them, 'Have you never read in the scriptures: "The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; this was the Lord's doing, and it is amazing in our eyes"? 43 Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that produces the fruits of the kingdom. 44 The one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and it will crush anyone on whom it falls.' 45 When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they realised that he was speaking about them. 46 They wanted to arrest him, but they feared the crowds, because they regarded him as a prophet. At the end, the Reader says: This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. (At the end, the Reader says: This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to thee, O Christ.) (c) New Revised Standard Version of the Holy Bible. POST COMMUNION PRAYER: Lord, we pray that your grace may always precede and follow us, and make us continually to be given to all good works; through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN.

Gillian Benfield REFLECTION : Autumn Day Lord it is time./ The summer is so immense/ lay your shadow on the sundial,/ and let loose the wind in the fields. Bid the last fruits to be full,/ Give them another two more southerly days,/press them to ripeness, and chase the last sweetness into the heavy wine. Whoever has no house now will not build one anymore./ whoever is alone will remain so for a long time./ will stay up, read and write long letters,/ and wonder the avenues, up and down,/ restlessly, while the leaves are blowing A beautiful poem by Rilke gives us a vivid reminder that autumn is upon us when it feels like the earth is shutting down and we shall soon be enveloped in long dark nights. The poem also describes all our differing moods excitement, happiness, the sense of loss, loneliness, dread, and more moods we often fail to recognise because we fill our lives with such busyness that we have no time to stop and stare to just - Be. The Divine is giving you a kiss. The kiss will set your heart on fire. Daphne Himmel
