1 Albanian Orthodox Archdiocese in America ~ SS Peter and Paul Albanian Orthodox Church ~ sspeterpaulphila.org 9230 Old Bustleton Avenue ~ Philadelphia, PA ~ Church Phone: Pastor: Father Stephen Siniari ~ Phone: ~ frsiniari@gmail.com FATHER STEPHEN S MESSAGE TO THE FAITHFUL No Lent without Love Prayer and fasting should in their turn be accompanied by almsgiving -- by love for others expressed in practical form, by works of compassion and forgiveness. Eight days before the opening of the Lenten fast, on the Sunday of the Last Judgement the appointed Gospel is the Parable of the Sheep and the Goats (Matt. 25:31-46), reminding us that the criterion in the coming judgement will not be the strictness of our fasting but the amount of help that we have given to those in need. In the words of the Triodion: Knowing the commandments of the Lord, let this be our way of life: Let us feed the hungry, let us give the thirsty drink, Let us clothe the naked, let us welcome strangers, Let us visit those in prison and the sick. Then the Judge of all the earth will say even to us: 'Come, ye blessed of My Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you. It is no coincidence that on the very threshold of the Great Fast, at Vespers on the Sunday of Forgiveness, there is a special ceremony of mutual reconciliation for without love towards others there can be no genuine fast. And this love for others should not be limited to formal gestures or to sentimental feelings, but should issue in specific acts of almsgiving. Such was the firm conviction of the early Church. -- Bishop Kallistos Ware writing in the Lenten Triodion Special Announcements from Fr. Stephen Father Stephen may be reached at , Monday - Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM or by frsiniari@gmail.com. Please remember that all confessions and consultations on Sunday mornings shall take place from 9 AM to 10 AM before the Divine Liturgy. Thank you. 5 Memory Eternal +Marie (Mary) G. Muzekari fell asleep in the Lord on January 28, She sang in SS Peter & Paul Church Choir for 30 years. She loved her church and she loved her faith. Compassionate, giving and generous, always putting family first, Marie faithfully cared for her mother, Olga John, until her mother reposed peacefully in the Lord in Always a smile on her face, always willing to help, always a sweet hello for everyone in the parish, Marie s gentle unassuming ways and unpretentious manner will always be treasured. A genuine lady, a loving and dedicated mother and grandmother, Marie will always be lovingly remembered, profoundly missed and cherished by family, friends and parishioners. Memorial contributions may be made to the Delaware County Library System at: May +Marie s memory be eternal! The Memorials for +Marie Muzekari and +Ted Muzekari are on Sunday, February 24 Police Officer Joe Sullivan, Father Stephen Siniari, Police Officer Scott Dempsey CPR Save by Captain/EMT Dan Devitt Jan 21, 2013 (as published on the official website of Westmont Fire Company No. 1) On October 26th, 2012, Engine 1512, BLS 1557 and Medic 44 were dispatched to the parking lot of the Irish Mile for a Respiratory Arrest. Engine 1512 and BLS arrived on scene within minutes and found Haddon Township Police removing a patient from the vehicle in cardiac arrest. The quick actions of the Police, Medics, EMS and Fire Company resulted in this call being a CPR Save. Recently Father Stephen Siniari and his wife came to the Firehouse to thank everyone that was involved in saving his life. Father Siniari is a Chaplain for the Philadelphia Police Department. Father Siniari and his wife were very thankful for the quick actions and determination of everyone on scene, without them the outcome could have been drastically different. A few words from Father Stephen: You may think Margot and Fr Stephen went to say thanks to the First-Responders and of course, Margot did, but Fr Stephen went to complain to the chief about the First-Responders shredding his hop-a-long-cassidy shirt when they cut it off to administer the defibrillators 3 times in the ambulance with no response... but Ray, the EMT, never stopped administering CPR the entire ride to Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Camden. Then 3 times with the defibrillator in the ER with no response... (they say almost 20 minutes with no heart beat or oxygen...) the Holy Theotokos must have been watching over Father Stephen... and God heard the prayers of those who love him. Fr Stephen is currently trying to track down the ER nurse who said, Try it one more time...! PAGE 5

From his youth he was distinguished for his piety and his love for classical studies. He was especially proficient in philosophy, and so he was known as Sophronius the Wise. The future hierarch, however, sought the true philosophy of monasticism, and conversations with the desert-dwellers. He arrived in Jerusalem at the monastery of St Theodosius, and there he became close with the hieromonk John Moschus, becoming his spiritual son and submitting himself to him in obedience. They visited several monasteries, writing down the lives and spiritual wisdom of the ascetics they met. From these notes emerged their renowned book, the LEIMONARION or ST SOPHRONIUS THE PATRIARCH OF JERUSALEM (Commemorated on March 11) SPIRITUAL MEADOW, which was highly esteemed at the Seventh Ecumenical Council. To save themselves from the devastating incursions of the Persians, Sts John and Sophronius left Palestine and went to Antioch, and from there they went to Egypt. In Egypt, St Sophronius became seriously ill. During this time he decided to become a monk and was tonsured by St John Moschus. After St Sophronius recovered his health, they both decided to remain in Alexandria. There they were received by the holy Patriarch John the Merciful (November 12), to whom they rendered great aid in the struggle against the Monophysite heresy. At Alexandria St Sophronius had an affliction of the eyes, and he turned with prayer and faith to the holy Unmercenaries Cyrus and John (January 31), and he received healing in a church named for them. In gratitude, St Sophronius then wrote the Lives of these holy Unmercenaries. When the barbarians began to threaten Alexandria, Patriarch John, accompanied by Sts Sophronius and John Moschus, set out for Constantinople, but he died along the way. Sts John Moschus and Sophronius then set out for Rome with eighteen other monks. St John Moschus died at Rome. His body was taken to Jerusalem by St Sophronius and buried at the monastery of St Theodosius. In the year 628, Patriarch Zacharias of Jerusalem ( ) returned from his captivity in Persia. After his death, the patriarchal throne was occupied for two years by St Modestus (December 18). After the death of St Modestus, St Sophronius was chosen Patriarch. St Sophronius toiled much for the welfare of the Jerusalem Church as its primate ( ). Toward the end of his life, St Sophronius and his flock lived through a two year siege of Jerusalem by the Moslems. Worn down by hunger, the Christians finally agreed to open the city gates, on the condition that the enemy spare the holy places. But this condition was not fulfilled, and St Sophronius died in grief over the desecration of the Christian holy places. Written works by Patriarch Sophronius have come down to us in the area of dogmatics, and likewise his "Excursus on the Liturgy," the Life of St Mary of Egypt (April 1), and also about 950 troparia and stikheras from Pascha to the Ascension. While still a hieromonk, St Sophronius reviewed and made corrections to the Rule of the monastery of St Sava the Sanctified (December 5). The saint's three Odes Canons for the Holy Forty Day Great Fast are included in the the contemporary Lenten Triodion. Reading & Icon Courtesy of OCA Website! PAGE 7
