2 Dear Friends, The Jesuits of the Maryland and Northeast Provinces are conducting an evaluative study of the six retreat houses on the East Coast, and to help form a picture of our ministry, we were asked to provide some testimonials about the Jesuit Center for Spiritual Growth. These testimonials, from a variety of retreatants, former and adjunct staff, trainees, and liaisons among our hosted groups, simply glow with enthusiasm and appreciation for the spiritual treasures and transformative moments that so many people have experienced and continue to experience here. I could quote any or all of them, but I choose to quote that of my predecessor, Susan Bowers Baker, who retired from her ministry at the Center after twenty-five years to relocate with her husband Bruce to California to be near family. In her testimonial, Susan writes, Knowing I cannot stay with you I will take you with me, the graced moments I will carry within and share with those I meet along the way. And in the sharing, I will return. These are words I wrote on a Jesuit Center postcard after my first retreat there in September of Now, thirty-four years later, after numerous retreats and programs I attended as a participant and after having had the privilege to minster on the staff from 1993 until this past May, these words are written on my heart. What I have witnessed in my own life and in the lives of those I have been privileged to meet and companion on the Way is that the Jesuit Center for Spiritual Growth holds graced power and possibility to change lives, to transform hearts, to ennoble spirits, to bring one into profound and oftentimes unexpected experiences of God, of God s love. The legacy of St. Ignatius of Loyola is alive and well, as every effort is made to help seekers come to know God in all things through dedicated staff and adjunct staff, breathtaking grounds, a well-kept and venerated building, and thoughtfully planned retreats and programs. The graced moments live on and I pray that they may continue to do so for many years into the future. There is no way I can adequately acknowledge or thank Susan for her graced ministry and leadership over so many years, but all of us at the Jesuit Center are indeed profoundly grateful. Susan is much missed, but we continue to live out and foster as best we can the graced moments of which she speaks. We invite you to join us for a day, a weekend, a week whatever you can manage of prayer and reflection in the tradition of St. Ignatius Loyola and the Society of Jesus. Come and experience the beauty and power of these hallowed grounds. You are sure to find a warm welcome here Br. 6 Series & Weekday Programs This is what is meant by the famous Ignatian motto finding God in all things. All things to Ignatius is the whole panoply of human drama our relationships, our work, our strivings and failures, our hopes and dreams. God can be found in all of it. David L. Fleming, SJ, What Is Ignatian Spirituality? But what does that mean for those whose hearts are already torn open by the loss of a loved one? How do we draw close to God again? This four-week series will adapt for the grieving soul the traditional Lenten practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, using conversation, poetry, and ritual to guide participants along a path of deepening trust. Iconographer Jody Cole returns to the Jesuit Center to share the basic techniques, symbolism, and spirituality of icon writing (painting) through hands-on experience in approximately 24-hours of studio time. All supplies are included in the cost of the program. Artistic talent is not required; beginners are welcome. After registering, participants will be guided in choosing a beginner s icon or one more advanced. Experienced painters and returning students may contact Jody directly at jcoleicons@aol.com to discuss their project choice. Participation is limited to 15. 8 Directed Retreats (by length) God s dream in our hearts is a tender but all-powerful seed. We are charged with the task of bringing the dream to birth. How can we do that? [St.] Ignatius suggests a way that leads, through prayer, to an ever deepening intimacy with the Lord in his earthly ministry, in his passion, and in his resurrected life. Margaret Silf, Inner Compass Weekend Directed Retreats A weekend directed retreat is a privileged means of deepening one s intimacy with God. It is an individualized, personal, two-day experience of prayer, guided by a companion, a trained spiritual director. The assigned director, either a Spiritual Growth staff member or one of our Associate or Guest Directors, will meet with you individually on Saturday and Sunday to help you to process your prayer and discern the movement of the Spirit. Our directed retreats are conducted in silence, because in the stillness of the retreat, one can be free of daily concerns and better hear the quiet voice of God. During each retreat, liturgy is offered each day, and there are opportunities for Reconciliation, Eucharistic Adoration, and massage (for an additional fee). All linens, towels, and meals are provided. Arrival is on Friday between 4:00 and 5:45 PM, followed by dinner, a meeting with your director, and the opening prayer service. Departure is on Sunday at 2:00 PM. Cost: $240 ($120 non-refundable deposit) Weekend Directed Retreats in : December 7-9, January 25-27, March 29-31, May 31-June 2, July Day and 8-Day Directed Retreats A directed retreat is a privileged means of deepening one s intimacy with God. 9 The Spiritual Exercises Intimacy with Jesus is the central grace of the Spiritual Exercises. David L. Fleming, SJ, What Is Ignatian Spirituality? The 30-Day Retreat: June 30 August 3, 2019 The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius may be done in the form of a thirty-day silent retreat. This individually directed retreat is for those who wish to deepen their relationship with Jesus Christ through the full-time, month-long experience of the Spiritual Exercises. The 30-day retreatant is guided by an experienced spiritual director who meets with the retreatant daily through the month. It is important that an individual who undertakes a retreat of this magnitude is ready for and committed to the undertaking, as it is a major investment of time and energy for both retreatant and director. Individuals interested in making the Spiritual Exercises in this format are expected to have experience with at least one Ignatian directed retreat and to be committed to daily prayer and meditation and regular spiritual direction. An application process, including references, is required. Registration is limited. Deadline for application is March 1, After this date applications will be considered only if spaces are still available. Arrival: 4:00-5:45 PM on June 30 / Departure: 9:00 AM on August 3 Cost: $2,880 ($1,440 non-refundable deposit) As disciples, we do not receive the gift of God s love for our personal consolation We are simply men and women touched and transformed by the joy of God s love, who cannot keep this experience just to ourselves. From Pope Francis s message for the 54th World Day of Prayer for Vocations, The Spiritual Exercises in Daily Life (19th Annotation Retreat) St. Ignatius recognized that not everyone who desires to make the Spiritual Exercises can do so in a 30-day retreat situation. The Spiritual Exercises in Daily Life (19th Annotation Retreat) is offered to those who, because of other circumstances and responsibilities, cannot dedicate thirty days apart in a retreat setting. People of varied backgrounds and Christian traditions have benefited from this type of retreat, which can strengthen the habit of regular prayer, teach a greater facility in discernment, and help to integrate daily life and prayer. Retreatants commit to at least minutes of prayer time every day with materials from the Spiritual Exercises and meet for an hour a week (or every other week) with a director. This retreat usually spans a six to eight month period. The retreat may be begun at any time, but optimally would begin in September or October. The exact dates should be determined with the retreat director. An application process is required. Cost is based on a sliding scale and depends on the frequency of meetings. The Spiritual Exercises as a Series of Briefer Retreats The Spiritual Exercises can also be experienced through a series of four briefer retreats, each retreat covering the materials of one of the four Weeks of the Spiritual Exercises. Retreatants meet with a director on a daily basis and commit to the prayer material of the specific Week of the Exercises for that retreat. These retreats can be made within one year or over a period of several years. The dates must be determined with the retreat director. Cost range: $ (per retreat) Please visit to see our complete list of programs and to register for retreats.
