13 POPE FRANCIS ANNOUNCES FEBRUARY 23 rd AS DAY OF PRAYER AND FASTING FOR PEACE On February 4 th, Pope Francis declared the upcoming prayer day and said it is for the tragic protracted situations of conflict in different parts of the world, but especially for those suffering violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo and in South Sudan. I also invite non-catholic and non-christian brothers and sisters to join us in this initiative in whatever ways they deem most appropriate, he said. A day of prayer and fasting hearkens to Jesus words in Matthew 17:21/Mark 9:29, when the disciples are unable to cast out a demon and ask Jesus why they have been unsuccessful. This kind never comes out except by prayer and fasting, he answers them. In November, Francis led a prayer service at St. Peter s for peace in the two nations. He has repeatedly appealed for peace there. He has had hopes of visiting both nations, but with the conflict, a papal visit has been impossible. Recap of what s been going on Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC): Joseph Kabila is the country s president. He is only 46 but has ruled the country for 17 years. His term of office ran out in December 2016, and he is not constitutionally able to run again, but he has not organized elections. At the end of 2016, under mounting pressure, Kabila managed to keep a certain calm by promising elections within a year. The bishops helped to broker the deal. That year passed, though, with Kabila still in office. Elections are now planned for December of this year. The failure to hold elections as scheduled has fueled protests. The country has the highest number of displaced people in Africa. As much as 10% of the population (some 7.7 million people) are coping with extreme hunger. The country is at risk of falling back into full-fledged civil war for the third time in two decades. DRC is about 50% Catholic. The pope was planning to visit the country last year, but had to cancel due to the unrest. The pope wanted to come. The Holy See has made clear to the Congolese authorities that his visit is conditioned on the organization of the elections which are established by its constitution, Argentinian Archbishop Luis Mariano Montemayor the Vatican ambassador to the DRC told UN Radio last year. South Sudan: The Economist gave this summary in October of last year: South Sudan, the world s newest country, is like a jigsaw puzzle that has been broken apart, soaked in petrol and set alight. It will not be easy to put back together. It seceded from Sudan in 2011, after half a century of on-off rebellion and a peace deal in In a referendum, 99% of South Sudanese (who are mostly black and non- Muslim) voted to separate from the Arab, Muslim north. Sadly, clashes between different ethnic groups within South Sudan began almost immediately after independence. (There are about 60 tribes in the country.) Full-blown civil war erupted in 2013, after President Salva Kiir (a Dinka) sacked Vice-President Riek Machar (a Nuer). A truce in 2016 lasted less than four months. Out of South Sudan s pre-war population of 12m, the UN estimates that 2m have been displaced internally and another 2m have fled abroad. PRAYER: Lord, without you, our prayer would be in vain, and our hope for peace an illusion. But you are alive. You are at work for us and with us. You are our peace! Lord, break down the walls of hostility that today divide brothers and sisters, especially in South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Comfort those women who are the victims of violence in war zones and throughout the world. Protect children who suffer from conflicts in which they have no part, but which rob them of their childhood and at times of life itself. Help all the little ones and the poor of our world to continue to believe and trust that the Kingdom of God is at hand, in our midst, and is justice, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit (Rom. 14:17). Sustain all those who day by day strive to combat evil with good, and with words and deeds of fraternity, respect, encounter and solidarity. Strengthen government officials and all leaders with a spirit which is noble, upright, steadfast and courageous in seeking peace through dialogue and negotiation. Enable all of us to be peacemakers wherever we find ourselves, in our families, in school, at work, in the community, in every setting. Let us wash the feet of one another, in imitation of You, our Master and Lord. To You be glory and praise, now and forever. Amen.

Icons were venerated in the Eastern Church until the reign of Leo III ( A.D.) when under the influence of two bishops from Asia Minor, he decreed that the veneration of icons was idol worship. This decree marked the beginning of a long bloody battle against sacred images in the Eastern Church. Icons were destroyed or burned and their defenders cast into prison, exiled and even tortured. This battle lasted, with short intervals of peace, until 842 A.D. when Empress Theodora restored the use and veneration of icons. A synod at Constantinople was convoked which restored the veneration of holy images. The right way to use icons was defined, saying that the icon should be honored or venerated, but not worshipped as an idol in itself. On the first Sunday of the Great Lent the icons were brought back to the churches in solemn procession. That day is remembered as the triumph of Orthodoxy (tradition) over the iconoclasts (those who opposed the use of sacred images). Icons are important in that they affirm the dogma of the Incarnation of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ the Word of God made flesh. As this dogma is central to Christianity, the victory over the Iconoclasts came to broadly represent the victory of the true faith over all errors. The heart of Eastern Christianity, the inner mystery of its radiant beauty, the source of its worship and teaching is the glorification of Christ, the living God, through whom we know the Father and from whom we receive the Holy Spirit. Icons, hymns, prayers, worship and liturgy of the Eastern Church unceasingly focus our attention, our hearts, minds, and spirits on Jesus Christ: His person, redeeming message, and divinity. Icons are windows into that holy realm where God and the saints now dwell. By beholding of the sacred icons, each liturgical year as events are celebrated, we see the unfolding of Our Salvation. As the prophets beheld, as the Apostles have taught,... as the Church has received,... as the teachers have dogmatized,... as the Universe has agreed,... as Grace has shown forth,... as Truth has revealed,... as falsehood has been dissolved,... as Wisdom has presented,... as Christ Awarded,... thus we declare,... thus we assert,... thus we preach Christ our true God, and honor as Saints in words, in writings, in thoughts, in sacrifices, in churches, in Holy Icons; on the one hand worshipping and reverencing Christ as God and Lord; and on the other hand honoring as true servants of the same Lord of all and accordingly offering them veneration. This is the Faith of the Apostles, this is the Faith of the Fathers, this is the Faith of the Orthodox... 15 The Liturgy of the Pre-Sanctified Gifts The Divine Liturgy is a festive and joyous celebration. It is an occasion for expressing joy and as such is somewhat incompatible with the somber character of the weekdays during the Holy Great Fast. Thus in keeping with the penitential and ascetical character of the weekdays of the Great Fast, while still recognizing our spiritual need of being fed with the Divine Eucharist, our Church has prescribed that the Liturgy of the Pre-Sanctified Gifts be celebrated on Wednesdays and Fridays throughout Lent. The Liturgy of the Pre-Sanctified Gifts strikes the perfect balance necessary for the season of the Great Fast. It may be characterized, without exaggeration, as the heart, the center, of the services of Great Lent. This beautiful service with its unique music, is essentially not a liturgy in the sense of the Liturgies of St. John Chrysostom or St. Basil the Great, but is rather a special rite of Communion. This liturgy provides us with the much needed spiritual Food of the Holy Eucharist, yet it maintains the penitential character of the season. It is meant to strengthen us as we travel the Lenten journey. During this service there is no consecration of Eucharistic gifts. Holy Communion is reserved from the previous Sunday s Divine Liturgy; therefore the term Pre-Sanctified is used. As the congregation kneels during the psalms of Vespers, the Pre-Sanctified gifts are prepared for communion. They are transferred from the tabernacle on the altar where they have been reserved since the Divine Liturgy, and are placed on the table of preparation. After the evening hymn, Old Testament scriptures usually of Genesis and Proverbs are read, between which the priest blesses the congregation with a lighted candle and the words: The Light of Christ enlightens all, indicating that all wisdom is given by Christ in the Church through the scriptures and sacraments. After the readings, the evening Psalm 141 is solemnly sung with the offering of incense. Then, after the litanies of intercession, the Pre-Sanctified Eucharistic gifts are brought to the altar in a solemn, silent procession. After the litany and prayers, the Our Father is sung and the faithful receive Holy Communion to the chanting of the verse from Psalm 34: O taste and see how good is the Lord. Alleluia. The post-communion hymns are sung and the faithful depart with a prayer to God who has brought us to these all-holy days of purification of our souls and bodies, for control of our passions and for hope in the Resurrection...to fight the good fight, to run the course of the fast, to keep the faith...to attain without reproach the worship of your holy resurrection. The Divine Liturgy of the Pre-Sanctified Gifts instructs and fortifies us in our Lenten journey to Holy Pascha. It is an integral part of the spiritual journey taken during the Holy Great Forty-Day Fast. By hearing the Word, we are instructed as to what God expects of us; and by participating in the Eucharistic Banquet, we are given the spiritual Food that fortifies us in order to accomplish our goal. The Liturgy of the Pre-Sanctified Gifts is celebrated every Wednesday and Friday during the Great Fast. It is also celebrated on Monday-Wednesday of Holy Week.
